I asked my friend Guenter Wendt what color they were and he said "FLAT BLACK".  On the other hand, I find Gun Metal to be a pleasing shade.

After today's work on the project, this is where I am at.

1: I cleaned up the interior of the Gemini and added antennas to the adapter. I also started painting the Agena and details on the Gemini. Buzz has his umbilical now.

2:Side view.

3:Buzz and the interior of the hatch.

Yes, but flat black never translates well to scale.  That is why I have been going with the ultra dark grey.  The ultra dark blue is to try make it a bit different.  I like gun metal too.

And it photographs better.  Black washes out when I take pictures of it for photo shop.

I have progressed a bit more on Gemini XII.

1:Added gold foil to the rear of the Gemini. I also painted and added foil to the Agena.

2:Side views.

3:I started applying decals. The ones on the Agena are from my spares pile.  My Gemini VII model is seen on the left.

That is the 1/24 scale version.  This one comes in all of those sections, put it won't come apart. So, I just end up gluing them, except for one that has magnets I put in.

Gemini 12 is getting closer to being finished.  I have to work on the things like EVA rods and hand holds.  And a then connect the two spacecraft together.  They are just taped and laying next to each other in these photos.

Gemini 12 launched on November 11, 1966. It was the final mission of the Gemini program. Astronauts Jim Lovell and Buzz Aldrin spent 3 days, 22 hours and 34 minutes in space. Buzz conducted the most successful spacewalk to date, paving the way for his next walk, on the moon on Apollo 11. Here is my finished model of that space walk, in 1/48 scale. Using an old Revell Gemini kit, a kit I first had as a 5 year old, with update parts and an Agena Target Vehicle by Realspace models. This is the last kit in 1/48 scale I have, so it is fitting it becomes the last Gemini mission.

Always wanted the Airfix kit!

Get the newer Skylab version.  It has the Apollo upper stage as well as Skylab.  And it is usually cheaper!!

Does it come with the CSM and LM as well?

You're not using an airbrush, are you?  If not, it would be a very good next step to advance your skills.  Not cheap, but you can accumulate the pieces over time.  I built a spraybooth for about $100, a good airbrush is maybe $150-200, plus another $100-$150 for a compressor and fittings.  There are probably deals on eBay if you look around.  At some point, your building skills get hidden under thick paint from brushes or rattlecans, no matter how careful you are.

I have always dreamed of having a good airbrush and compressor, but never been able to get there financially. And building resin kits or old kits with update parts and aftermarket decals, it gets expensive.

But, heck, even rattle can model paint is $5 to $10 for those tiny cans, so it may save me in the long run.  I need to revisit that, especially with weird colors on some items.....like the LM!

What an impressive Gemini space fleet. You even modelled the "angry alligator".  :)

That is another Realspace kit.  That is a very important piece to me.  Seeing that on TV during the mission coverage is one of, if not the first memory I have as a child.  I think I may have been 3 at the time.  I made my first model of it using two triangle blocks from my wood block set at the time!  I never stopped watching missions after that.

I decided to give a refurbishment to my Saturn V 500F model.  The model was one I built back in 1999 or so and used home made decals that had faded.  The clear coat had also yellowed.  So, I decided to repaint, redecal with modern decals and detail a few things.  I detailed the single F-1 engine and build the engine weight simulators using stacked washers.  I replaced the under sized CSM with a Block I from Realspace Models' Saturn 1B kit.  Very happy with my 500F!!
