Mobile version of NSF
« on: 09/23/2013 06:11 pm »
We're doing some work on that, so can people let us know if it auto-detects your phone and sends you to the mobile version of the forum when you enter....

If so, please list phone etc. If not, please do the same.

Thanks.

Works on my iPhone. It's going to take some time to get used to the new interface.

Auto-detected my iPad with Chrome as a phone. Personally, I think tablets should use the general site. And I didn't find it intuitive to go to the new posts. Besides, it uses more screen reale state than the full site.

Autodetected on Droid RAZR.. Chrome, Default and Dolphin browsers.

Preselection highlighting(blue) of forum topics appears in Default and Dolphin browser when attempting to drag page up and down. This is a bit annoying and there is a performance penalty.  This does not happen when using Chrome.

It auto-detects it as mobile.  The mobile version of the forums has an annoying problem on my phone: the first time I click on a topic, it takes me there briefly, then bounces me back to the previous page.  I have to click it again to get to the topic.

Yes, you can always switch back to the full site (button on bottom right), but I'm going to set the default for 'tablets' to the full site as soon as possible.

It works on my iPhone with iOS7 but I have some slight issues:

-When scrolling it highlights the section under my finger in blue, which is confusing.

-The forum descriptions are now included in the list of forums, this is different from the old mobile site and it means you have to scroll a lot more to reach the bottom of the list.

-The text size used to display posts is a bit too large.

-When reading a topic with multiple pages there's no indication of the total number of pages, i.e. 'page 2/5' and there is no 'next' or 'previous' button to navigate pages.

My iPad3 now displays using the phone interface, which is very annoying.  The standard web interface on an iPad is much better than the mobile stripped down version.

Edit: I didn't see that there was already a second page to this thread when i wrote this, so I didn't realize that the tablet issue had already been raised.  Thanks for the tip about the button for switching to the full version, this is much better!

It works on my iphone 5.

But the forum and thread list views are VERY tall - please trim the information so the display is more manageable.

Once you are in a thread it looks good, though.

Samsung GT P1000 (mk 1 7" tab).

I'm getting mobile version on stock browser, firefox & chrome.

This includes when I request "desktop version" on stock browser.

Per comment above, I'd agree that would be good if stock would continue to display mobile  version in standard mode, but honour the request for desktop version if I select that from the menu.

One comment re stock browser - I use the labs feature "quick controls" which intercepts touches at very edge of the screen. Thus makes it quite difficult to select the buttons up in the corners of the layout. (TBH, I find QC to be a PITA, but I do keep using it.)

The mobile site still requires an awful lot of scrolling to see anything. I'm attaching two screen caps from my iPhone 5 with iOS 7:
(I'm posting using tapatalk as a test)

As far as the scrolling required, it is a bit silly when in many forums the sticky threads are 2x page tall before you get to current threads.  There really is no need to show that much information about a forum and/or thread.

EDIT 2: replaced weird attached images.

A nice service to have, well done to all involved.
However, I agree with Lars_J about the excessive scrolling required. It's actually quicker to scroll using the regular version.

Also, on my Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830) the menu buttons are simply white circles (i.e. no icons), so I had to guess what they were for. Finally got to see what they're supposed to look like thanks to Lars_J's screenshots.

Click the 'menu' button (three horizontal lines stacked on top of each other) in the white circle in the top left corner, you'll find it there.

You may have the same problem as Garret, though, where some menu images are not loading.

There is one IMO rather critical flaw in the Mobile version of the site - When you are in a forum thread, on the last page, the "next page" arrow still exists - BUT it takes you to the "All" view of the thread. (This may be because the combobox/drop-down that allows direct page access has the "All" entry as the last one)

BTW, If you want to see how the mobile site looks, click on the "Mobile" tiny link at the bottom of the page.

Can the "next page" link be removed when on the last page? Or remove the "All" option from the page list? It is a bit frustrating to never be sure if you actually are on a last page, and if you are, you get a whole LOT loaded when all of the posts are loaded.

Just started using the mobile version and I wonder about Lars question. Sometimes when I'm at the last post in the thread I see the right arrow and get the behavior Lars mentions. Sometimes it works as I think it should where the next page arrow doesn't exist because you are at the last post. No clue why the different behavior for same situation of being on the last post of a thread.

Suspect it works same way as the main site, where "all" is only an option up to a certain maximum number of posts in the thread.

Also, and even more to the point, Android's *browser* has a "request desktop version of this site" option, IE switch to a different identifying string.

Why not use that if you want NSF to give you the desktop version on your tablet?

I have an iPad.  The desktop version is a VAST improvement over the Mobil version for this platform.  Using the button to switch is only a minor annoyance, but it's hard to imagine someone preferring the version that was designed for a tiny screen when you have a full tablet.

Is it an iPad mini?

If not, please try that (non HD version if those are available yet), then report back.  ;)

I have a 7" tablet with 1024x768 screen. Mobile version is a *vast* improvement on that.

According to the user agent options available to my Android browser, my user agent is separate from that for iPad. Maybe OK to switch the experience for iPad users - (though not sure if that might annoy iPad mini users!!)

Laying in bed with a keyboard, mouse and monitor would not be fun.   ;)   I took a chance on buying an iPad for fear that it would end up joining my dust collecting laptop, but I'm totally addicted.  That's probably not a good thing.

PS.  I have a third gen full iPad.  I don't get what the point of the mini is.

A 7" tablet can fit into a woman's purse.  A 10" cannot.

Personally I don't get tablets at all.  Both my wife and I use our phones as tablets.  They're more flexible since they have cell connections and can be used as phones and they can be with you all the time.  Two less things for me to buy, maintain and upgrade.  And when I need more than I can do on my phone, a tablet wouldn't work either, so I use the laptop a lot.

NSF is fine either way on my phone.  Still miss a "my topics" function but it's not on either version anyway.

My tablet has 3G and full voice calling. It's basically a 7" phone / phablet. No separate phone so "one less thing for me to buy and maintain", too.

While I usually use a Bluetooth headset for the actual calls, it will do the 80's "brick to the side of the head" in an emergency.

This feature is available on Galaxy Tabs and Notes, and Asus Fonepad.

Cheers, Martin

PS Part of the reason you don't get tablets may be the experience of trying to use desktop websites on a screen which is too small, and designed for precise mouse clicking instead of pudgy finger tapping. ;)

Nobody, myself included, gets tablets until you have one.
Then you find out that they are better to read stuff than your full-scale computer which is definitely not true for a phone, no matter of the size, and all of the sudden your perspective on how you use stuff starts to change.

I bought my first iPad for development only and thought "he, I'm never really going to use this thing myself". Biggest misconception ever.

L2 bug... In the mobile browser, when you're on the last page in a public thread at the bottom you'll see the back arrow to the left of the page number selector. When you're on the last page in an L2 thread, you'll see the back arrow, the page number selector, and then the forward arrow. Pressing forward takes you to page 1. I like the first style better as you'll know it's the end of the thread.

I have been using, and greatly enjoying, the mobile version on my iPad - but you've evidently reverted to the desktop version as default for tablets. If there is a place to request the mobile version, it is incredibly well hidden! Please, how about a large and obvious button (like the one that said "use desktop version" when in mobile format) that lets us choose to default to the (vastly superior, IMHO) mobile version?

I'm having an issue with the mobile version of the site via Android Chrome (39.0.2171.93) on a Galaxy Note 8.0 (N5120) running Android 4.4.2 . If I try to reply to a thread, the text box is greyed out, and not editable. This makes it impossible to post from the mobile theme. It's been like this for some time, TBH.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7d3jzidvi7vaq3t/2014-12-15%2009.48.50.png?dl=0

It seems to work from Firefox Android (34.0) on this device.

It also seems to work OK on my phone (Galaxy Grand Duos, I9082), on Android 4.2.2. This is running exactly the same version of Chrome, so my first hunch is this is somehow related to Android 4.4 over 4.2.

I'm not really sure that the text box looks right when it's greyed out. I'd perhaps expect this to have a white background if it can take user input. Not sure if this is related in some way to the issue I'm having?

My problem is more of an annoyance:

My Android tablet stays logged on and I have no problems.
My Android phone requires me to log on every time (even though I click the "stay logged on" switch)

You should always remember to mention what browser you are using. Remember that Google isn't supporting the default Android Browser anymore (the one which can be named as Internet or Browser by hardware vendor).  Use whatever works, I recommend Opera.

Heads up - expect a lot more traffic on this theme!

Dumb question, Chris feel free to delete/move/answer. On my android 4.4.2 SCH-I545 Build / KOT49H Chrome 39.0.2171.93 I accidentally clicked the view full site button and now can no longer get back to the mobile version. Anyone know how to get back to the mobile version? It grows on you, but I kinda like it better when using the phone.

Broke out the microscope and finally found it. It is tiny text at the bottom of the screen. I was looking for a button or something equivalent. Completely missed the text.

Heh! That really did require three arrows! We'll look at solving that, especially as we need to make it (c) 2015 on the site tags.

If you come to NSF on a mobile browser, that browser identifies itself to the server, and the mobile version of the site is rendered.

On Android, the three browsers that I use (Chrome, Firefox, and  "Internet") all have an option where they can override the default and instead "request desktop site", or similar. Unfortunately, NSF's mobile theme ignores the "hey, give me the desktop site" request, and gives the mobile version again.

It would be a superb usability enhancement if this could switch over to the desktop theme, and back again.

I'm currently using a new (to me) Kindle Fire HD, which is replacing my three year old Kindle Fire.  Both tablets use a version of the special Kindle edition of Android, with the old Fire using an older version of it.  Its proprietary browser is called Silk.  With Silk on the new Fire HD, I got an initial offer (read more like a requirement) to download and use Tapatalk to access the forums.  Took two tries to convince it I didn't want to install Tapatalk.  It then displayed the mobile version of the site, but near the bottom of the mobile version's home page there was a link labeled "View full site".  This brought up the regular full site I can see on my desktop PC, and it operates exactly like the site operates on my PC using Chrome under Win7.

Now if I could only get Silk to run Flash Player, I'd be a very happy.camper, as there area number of websites I enjoy that require Flash (not the least of which is the NASA TV streaming video functions).  But, except for the wording of the Tapatalk offer dialog, which really made it sound like you couldn't use the site any other way, I'm finding the full site works quite well through Silk.

I hope that is useful data for y'all.

Yeah, I wasn't focused on the full site link.  I was able to find that fairly easily.  I was more trying to document the process I saw when I first accessed the site on my new Kindle.  The only glitch, if you want to call it that, I found in the process was how aggressively it was pushing me to use Tapatalk, to the point of acting like it didn't believe me when I tried to tell it I didn't want to use it.

Nothing aggravates me more than software that refuses to believe I don't want to use (or especially purchase) it.  That is, to my mind, an unethical marketing ploy, and unless I find that i have been given absolutely no choice, I will put products presented in that fashion onto my "never, ever use" list.  Tell me why it's to my advantage to use your product, don't try to strong-arm me into using it, or worse, lie to me and tell me I have no choice.  I always have a choice, and pushing me like that almost guarantees my choice will not favor your product.

I have scrolling issues on my ipad mini, default safari browser.

When I start scrolling, nothing happens for first half or one second. Only then it starts scrolling.
But my finger has already moved halfway thorugh the screen and I can only scroll very little amount at time.

NSF mobile version is the _only site_ where I have this kind of problems. The full version of the site works without problems.

When you're on the last page in an L2 thread, you'll see the back arrow, the page number selector, and then the forward arrow. Pressing forward takes you to page 1. I like the first style better as you'll know it's the end of the thread.

It's not just L2, it just depends on how many pages there are in the thread, once you get past a certain page number it stops showing the 'all' option.

But when the 'all' option is available, the mobile site shows the 'next page' arrow, and there is no way of knowing if hitting that will take you to the next page or to all pages.

PLEASE PLEASE take the 'next page' arrow out of the mobile site when 'next' means 'all', (I rarely use the 'all' option, but if it must be there, please make it look different).

I understand the problem is that the logic that renders the next arrow just sees that there is another entry in the paging dropdown, perhaps the simplest solution would be to remove the 'all' option from the dropdown, just make it a separate link when available, (there is plenty of room for "Go to page:", 'prev', dropdown, 'next' - and 'all' when available.

Well, for lack of a better place to put it, I thought I'd put it here. Hello from your latest member. I'm Ya'akov, from Sioux City, IA. Just thought I'd greet you all. Please note that I have a tablet, a Kindle, & a Basic Phone using the WAP2 interface. If you go to the bottom of the page & click on the small word "WAP2", you'll switch your computer to see how primitive it is. It also has character/space limits, hence the need for me to abbreviate & use symbols. Also, long posts may take 2 or more entries. Also note that I'm on a phone keypad, so answers do take a bit of time. But it is great to be here. Mostly I shall be on my phone rather than my tablet or Kindle. My computer died after serving a good life. Now when I need 1 I use my wife's, but not for social stuff like this. Anyway, hello. Good to meet all of you!

Not sure. I logged in on my iphone 6 in safari without issue. Could be some external tapatalk issue? I did notice that for once I didn't get that annoying "do you want tapatalk" message. If it is, it's to do with tapatalk not us and out of our control.

What I'd say for this thread is anyone having issues, always add their device/OS and Browser - so there's an ability (based on others having the same) to try and duplicate an issue.

Chris to add: it really helps to also know version and build of device operating system and browser app version because based on experience, versions will display different problems that may not exist on another version.

I just got an Android tablet (Galaxy Tab S2 8.0). I noticed the same issue logging in with both Chrome and Samsung's browser. The error message is "Your session timed out while posting. Please go back and try again." The problem happens even with a clean cache and cleared off cookies. I had to request the desktop site to log in. From there, I could switch back to the mobile site.

I'm having the same issue logging in on my mobile. Android 7.1.2 Chrome 58.0.3029.83

I have tried:
1. logging in as normal
2. deleting browser history
3. incognito mode
4. request as desktop site

All of the above fail with the same error reported above.

I have just been to europe and did notice my browse still showing me cookie banners and wondered if that was relevant. I mention this because when I went to bloomberg it took me to the europe subsite even though I am back in canada.

So that's rounding it down to Android/Chrome it seems? All tapatalk, or not, by the way?

I wonder if there's actually anything Mark can do (they always say if you change something it could impact on everyone else).

Good temp solution with the full site and back to mobile. Nicely noted.

And of course we are going to have a new (proper) mobile site before long, which will be beta tested on all devices/OS and browsers.

---

I have made Mark aware in case there is something he can do.

Good temp solution with the full site and back to mobile. Nicely noted.

Based on discussion with Chris today, I can confirm that works for me as well.

Maybe I am just dense but it took me a while to figure out how to go back to "mobile theme" from the full site. Therefore, in case it helps someone else who is stuck with this, here are the more detailed steps. If it is obvious to you then just ignore this post please.

Issue: Using the mobile theme on your phone and on login, you see
> An Error has occured! Your session timed out while posting. Please go back and try again.

Steps:
- on the mobile themed error page, select the "full site" button, lower right, to go to "full site"
- select "login" on the full site,  and login as usual. It is option #5, row #2 from the top.
- I did confirm the "this site uses cookies" popup as well.
- after login, go to forum home page again
- scroll down to the very bottom and look for the very very last line on the page.
- in tiny tiny letters, it says "mobile" as 3rd link.
- select the "mobile" and voila, you are in the mobile theme again, logged in and ready to go!

OK, Mark's done some coding. Can you all check it's back to normal mobile log in for all?

Question: when I use the in browser feature  (white blue and grey interface) it suffers from this feature where when typing long messages it scrolls back up to the top of message EVERY key I press. Is there a way to disable this? Would happily not use tapatalk if there was a way around this.

Tested that on my phone, Android 7.something,latest Opera and Chrome. Couldn't make that happen. How long message would it have to be?

Enough to take up the entire region above the keyboard, like what you would see with a few nested quotes.

When I click on an image in the mobile page and then hit 'back' to return to the thread the page goes to the top of the page instead of returning to where I was in the page. Very annoying.

I checked the code and there is a setting Hide Url Bar ($.mobile ... hideUrlBar: true), if I change that to false it behaves correctly (it returns to the correct place on the page).

I didn't manage to figure out what that setting does, but if it can be turned off it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

EDIT: I did some research and the code is there because apparently this trick causes the address bar to hide in some mobile browsers which gives the user a larger usable space. But it creates the issue I mentioned and other issues as mentioned here: https://www.hesslerdesign.com/blog/user-experience-2/why-window-scrollto-is-harmful-for-mobile-websites/

The solution is a slight update to the code to first check if the is already scrolled to anywhere besides the absolute top (0,0) before issuing the scroll to command.

Something that has confused me for a while... umm, not sure if I've even noticed this super recently, so maybe it is already "fixed"...

Let's say you're on the last page of a thread. At the bottom of the page there will be a drop down with the page number, with a "back" arrow on the left. On some threads there is nothing on the right. I guess this makes sense, you can't go further forward than the last page. However, on other threads there is a "forward" arrow. If you click it, it takes you to the "All" view where you see all the posts for the entire thread on one page.

I prefer when there is no forward arrow on the last page, then I know when I'm done and I can go "up" instead of forward. Regardless of my preference though... is there some logic behind the difference between threads?

This happens when the thread has 10 or fewer (I think that's the magic number) pages and there is a 'all' option. (you can see it on the non mobile site, where the 'all' option will appear after the individual page links for threads with 10 or fewer pages.

ZTE Trek 2 tablet (hey, it was "free"!) and an LG phone using Chrome, both Android. Using Chrome, if I select Post Actions it does nothing - no list of actions such as Like, etc. Zip.

Unimplemented?

I have a suggestion for the mobile view of news articles. When viewing articles on a mobile device the reader is presented with a "SEE ALSO" bar and related links (see attached for an example) in the middle of the article. This makes it look like the end of the article. I suggest adding something to the effect of, "[article continues below]" to above this "SEE ALSO" bar, so the reader knows to keep scrolling.

It's a small thing, but would help readability on smartphones.

I've noticed that issue as well. My solution would be to scrap the "See Also" bar. I don't think it's needed.

Edit: Well, maybe it is useful. Not sure if people use it or not. Is there a way to measure the clicks from it?  :P

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Maybe we could move it to the bottom of the article, so that it pops up at the end of the article on mobile?

Just rename the Shuttle forum section the NASA Historical section and add Mercury Gemini, Apollo et cetera to flesh out the section and rename the current historical thread to general historical.

Question about the mobile website handling of unread topics.

Do you use a cookie on the mobile browser to track last message read for a topic, or is the message number tracked on the server associated with my logged in id?

I often switch back and forth between my iPhone Safari browser and my Windows 10 desktop Chrome browser.  I have NO confidence in the mobile browser ability to position me at the next unread message for a topic, whether last visited via mobile or desktop browser.

This is something I think the <cast your favorite aspersion> Tapatalk application did, but I've been trying to switch off of that and use the mobile website.

Suggestions?  Chrome on iPhone maybe?  Or is there a setting in my profile I've not found ...

So, taking Chris' suggestion that this is the right place to provide my feedback ...

The mobile site doesn't seem to offer something equivalent to the "New" button that the main desktop site offers.

The "Unread Topics" on the desktop site includes a "New" icon that causes a URL like "https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=46644.msg1128440;topicseen#new" to be offered, with the tag ";topic seen#new" in the URL.

The mobile site doesn't seem to offer that, though I'd expect that is what the right arrow would give me on the "Recent Unread Topics" page would give me.  What I generally get there is a url of the sort https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=47004.msg1894247;topicseen#msg1894247 which isn't the same thing.

The different url's you are seeing come from two different places, the first one is on a section page, while the 2nd one is on the 'unread' page. In both cases the link is consistent between the full site and the mobile site, as far as I can tell.

But since we are here, I'll mention that if there are no 'new' posts, there doesn't seem to be a way to go the last page of a thread on the mobile site.

There might have been a reset (my bad) to your mobile preferences which leads to you getting another "privacy" and/or "cookie" and/or "registration" page. After switching to the mobile theme (bottom of page) everything should be back to normal.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Now I'm getting mobile mode on the front page, but not the  forums. Tried refreshing/click-mobile and using a new Chrome tab/click-mobile

That's the strangest issue I've ever seen with mobile NSF. *Seems* to be just RH, but yeah - before Mark tries to work it out, I've never heard anyone else note such an issue, so it could be specific to this member. Still want to get to the bottom of it.

Help?
And, here's my browser info from my desktop browser visiting the mobile site: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/71.0.3578.98 Safari/537.36

I'm getting the same link on the full site under the 'new' button and the mobile site under the right arrow. (and the same result, they are both taking me to the first new post in the thread).

So, checking from my desktop, Chrome browser at the mobile site - the right arrow URL on the Recent Unread Topics page shows:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=45440.msg1914048;topicseen#msg1914048

But on the Full Site page, the NEW button is

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=45440.msg1905893;topicseen#new

And the icon in the last post column is

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=45440.msg1914048;topicseen#msg1914048

Which is what I experience on my iPhone native browser.

So - if you are getting the #new on the right arrow on topics on the Recent Unread Topics page, perhaps there is a setting difference on your account from whatever setting I have set on mine.  Or maybe it's somewhere I'm not looking.

I'd like to figure out what the setting is for what parameter and how to set it on mine, because to be clear ...

Right now, on my account, in mobile mode, on the Recent Unread Topics page, the right arrow down the right hand side of the screen gets me a URL to the last message posted in the topic thread, and I would like it to instead give me a url to the first unread message (e.g., #new) of the topic thread.

How to I make it do that?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Mobile version of NSF

Ed

You are correct, I am indeed getting a different link, I didn't notice it, and it is taking me to the last page.

I'm having some severe usability issues with the mobile version of the forum.

1.  Creating a new account on mobile does not work.  It fails with an error message about not agreeing to terms and conditions.  However, terms and conditions are not on the account information form where you create your username and password and so forth.  It shows them in a previous window, and I checked the boxes, but apparently the hook is broken.

2.  When posting a message, the form layout is recalculated after every letter, or indeed any time the cursor is moved.  This results in the browser reseting the view to the top of the page, rendering posting messages longer than what fit the screen effectively impossible.

3.  Website does not respect the "desktop site" option in the mobile browser.  For obvious reasons, I want to use the desktop version of the site, but the server insists on sending the mobile layout regardless.

I'm using Chrome on an Android tablet.  Both the OS and the browser should be the most recent versions.  Android 8.1.0 and Chrome 72.0.3626.105

I use the desktop version of the site in Chrome on my Android phone (Galaxy S7) and it works fine for reading and posting.

edit: I use the "Full Site" button on the page to get to the desktop version

Definitely a huge pain but it is possible, I'm doing it that right now, I just type blindly and then scroll back to back to fix.

It doesn't respect the 'desktop site' browser menu option, but there is a button on the bottom right that says 'full site' and that works. (and if you want to go back to mobile, in the full site there is a link to mobile site at the very bottom of the page)

That's the strangest issue I've ever seen with mobile NSF. *Seems* to be just RH, but yeah - before Mark tries to work it out, I've never heard anyone else note such an issue, so it could be specific to this member. Still want to get to the bottom of it.

I have seen this issue once or twice - IIRC some URL links' special characters might have caused this issue.
Maybe someone might help to check that?

Yep. It's been this way for a long time and makes the mobile version quite a pain to use if you've not viewed unread for a while. For as long as I can stand it, I go to the last post with that button then scroll backwards to find where I think I left off. Really not ideal. The desktop site is far too small on my phone so that's not a solution.

It appears to be working now, with the right arrow taking you to a message in the middle of the thread that looks like it is “new”.

Much more useful. I hope I’m not imagining it.

Whenever i visit NSF main page on my phone (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/) and then press the menu to go to the forums, the NSF logo at the top takes 1-2 seconds to load and changes the other items' position in that list, causing misclicks.

can anything be done to fix this? Might be small but causes some annoyance.

attached a screenshot with the logo in question; using the latest version of chrome mobile on android.

I bet Mark could fix that if it's some running order of what loads first.

Just for the record, it doesn’t appear that I was imagining it. Just spent and enjoyable hour or so working my way around the forums in mobile mode on my iPhone and it works like a charm. Thanks.

I'm still getting this issue in the Unread Posts view (my default way to view NSF) - https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=unread

Example 1 I have never read the thread "Proton-M/Briz-M - EUTELSAT 5 West B & MEV-1 - October 9, 2019 (10:17 UTC)"

Tapping the title of that thread takes me to the first post, as expceted. URL:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=41418.0;topicseen

However, tapping the right-arrow takes me to the very last post, despite there being many unread ones. The URL is a hard link to that post:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=41418.msg2003353;topicseen#msg2003353

Example 2 I regularly read the thread "SpaceX Starship : Texas Prototype(s) Thread 3 : Discussion"

I know for a fact that multiple posts have been made since I last viewed it (the Replies counter has gone up more than one) yet the right-arrow still takes me to the last post. URL:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=49114.msg2003356;topicseen#msg2003356

All testing done in a Private desktop firefox window, with developer tools to spoof the deviceID

HOWEVER if I manually navigate to a category, eg "Space Policy Discussion"

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?board=44.0

and click the right-arrow on a thread I rarely read eg "
FAA Streamlined Launch and Reentry Licensing Requirements
"

Then I do get taken to the first unread post. URL:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=47923.msg1975128#new

note the slightly different format of the URL, with "#new" on the end instead of ";topicseen#msgnnnnnnn"

Therefore, the issue lies with the formatting of the Unread Posts template which must use different code to generate the URL for the right-arrow. It needs to use the same code as the normal category display.

A: I can confirm that the 'unread' posts has a different and apparently incorrect link.

B: There has been lots of work on the new desktop theme to make it quite good on mobile, you should try it out. (click the 'full site' button on the bottom right of the index page, and if you don't like it you can go back to mobile by finding the really tiny word 'mobile' at the very bottom of the full theme).

(With all the work they did on the new theme, I suspect they will not invest much time in the old mobile theme - even for tiny fixes like these)

Yeah, full site theme is better on mobile than it was, but the "new" button is tiny and that's the place I actually want to go. If that could be made big enough to tap reliably, that'd send me home happy.

Found another instance of this happening in the bottom half of https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=49936.msg2042538#msg2042538.

Occurs across multiple browsers and multiple devices.  Occurs regardless of whether I'm logged in, logged out, or incognito mode.

Personally, I hope the effort goes into improving this site. Even moving all the movies from YouTube back to NSF would be an improvement IMHO. Why? Because here, we have moderators 'be excellent to each other' while YouTube and Reddit, and others often devolve into toxic comments and deception that I have no interest in. Just my 2pc.

EDIT: PS: An excellent example of added value of aggregation, e.g., Twitter, back on NSF is the thread Starship Epoch Ecosystem Tweet Index and History - UPDATES IMHO

Have you tried the full site view lately? It has been updated to work on mobile, not perfect and still plenty of room for improvement, but eminently usable.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have used the site in both desktop and mobile mode recently and in the past to compare. Sure, the full desktop site runs on a small screen but it is pretty 'busy' for me. Personally, I much prefer the uncluttered mobile version of the forum. In the same way, I prefer the Safari "reader" mode for any articles on the web. Uncluttered, very readable due to the specific font choices. UX design for a small screen is a special skill and we should aim for the best IMHO.
