Hey all,

Recently I’ve been toying with the idea of creating a website focused solely on Spacex info, a sort of Spacex Encyclopedia Astronautica. I've created this thread to ask for any suggestions you would like to see on a Spacex information site. As the site progresses, I will also post PDF’s of information if any of you kind members wish to critique and review the information presented. I’m also planning on calling the website spacexguru.com, however, I am still open to suggestions. Again, if you have any recommendations and suggestions for what you would like to see on an all Spacex website, post them here. Also, I already talked to Chris and made it clear I would not compete with NSF. I’ll post more updates and info about the site as it progresses.

I will. May still be a while away though. I want it to have real thorough/comprehensive Spacex information all in one place, something that can't really be found today.

That would be the Spacex site

No, not really. Spacex does give regular updates, but the website I am creating would have up to date information on launch contracts and other items not on the Spacex website. Also items like transcripts of when Elon speaks at events and conferences in an information page on the event would be put on the website. All of this would be in an easy to read, easily searchable format. Perhaps I'm not doing a good job of expressing what I'm trying to create...

What's the deal with spacex.wikia.com? How long has it been "coming soon"?

Dunno, just looked it up. Are you planning wikistyle site or something only you update?

A wiki-style replacement for astronautix (not just SpaceX) would be really nice.

Perhaps learn how to spell SpaceX before starting a website :)

Have you considered updating the actual SpaceX Wikipedia pages instead of starting from scratch?

Messing with wikipedia is like messing with lot of unruly senators. They will wikilawyer you to death. It's better to start your own specialist wiki and grow it.

Clayton, may I ask how old you are?

Why not consider some interesting science projects for eventual pursuit of a SpaceX internship? Musk says that they look for candidates who show good hands-on practical experience as opposed to just book knowledge.

You could create a blogsite to chronicle your efforts, to leave yourself a nice trail showing what you've tried out.

I've created this thread to ask for any suggestions you would like to see on a Spacex information site.
I would like to see a site with links to every interview, press conference, political hearing, news article, technical presentation, etc.

Transcripts would be ideal, not just from Elon, but also Gwynne Shotwell, Max Vozoff, Tom Markusic, etc.  You wouldn't necessarily need full transcripts of everything, just parts that are noteworthy.

Then cross link these specific parts to particular topics.  For example, if you're interested in Falcon Heavy, you could find out what Gwynne said about the business model back in April 2010.

"The Falcon 9 Heavy ... that will be a very important vehicle for SpaceX.  That vehicle gets about 18 tons to GTO, so that dramatically changes the satellite communications business.  If you dual-manifest  two big satellites on a Falcon 9 Heavy, you’ve cut the launch costs of that mission by almost a factor of 2.  So that’s an important vehicle for us and for the industry."
http://www.thespaceshow.com/detail.asp?q=1348
(starting around 33:15 into the program).

Obviously a lot of work, but much of it could be done wiki style with input from everyone on the web.

Agreed.

Everything is still in the works/brainstorming stage. However, the amount of work is starting to seem overwhelming (as I should have realized in the beginning) so any site created would probably have to be wiki-style.

Perhaps learn how to spell SpaceX before starting a website :)

;) Might help a bit.

I am fairly young haha. Any reason you ask? :)

Well, first off you assume I am young/younger. You would be correct. Just wondering how you know this, was it an immature comment?  :D Anyway, I’m trying to find good hands-on type of things to do, however, it’s hard to find the sort of experience I would need where I live. I’m working on a “science” project that I might post more about later if anything ever comes of it. Also, a blog site may be in my future as well :)

Thanks for your input, and yes, a lot of work so that would probably mean the website would be wiki-style.

I am also very young and would like to become an engineer, I have a very neat project that I am working on right now, building a pulsejet, it is surprisingly easy and I would recommend it as a project, The plans I am using are the Advanced Focused Wave Engine and they are available at a website called pulsejetengines.com. Also...I live close to McGregor and would like to maybe volunteer as I am slightly too young for an internship.

That's good to know! Building a pulsejet is probably a good start to gain real world experiences. Also, your profile says you're 13, are you really that young? I'm not that young haha :). Anyway, I would love to be an intern at SpaceX, but I simply live too far away. :-\

Also, sorry OT I know...

You know that if you're really, really keen, you could try something like moving.  Maybe you have relatives or friends who live closer.  If you really want something enough, you'll find a way.

This is just 50 odd years of experience putting one out there for you to consider but that experience tells me that wanting something enough is often enough to make it happen when you add in the doing part.

All the best.  I would love to be in your shoes with an opportunity to get into the space field particularly with a company like SpaceX.
Cheers.

Well, consider that an online blog/journal can be a useful way to build up a "resume" of sorts to showcase a steady interest in science and engineering, as you seem to have.

I've read that aerospace is fast becoming the leading industry for offering the greatest number of meaningful internship opportunities, since it's also the industry suffering the most attrition from retirements. There's a strong desire to bring in a new generation who'll step up as the older one leaves. The average worker age in that industry is significantly higher than for other high tech industries - just something to keep in mind.

Then it's time to stop thinking. Do it for the fun of it and the rest will take care of itself.
