After the feed froze on me, I caught two still frames looking down from the internal camera, one of which seemed to show a lot of orange flame, which looked to be coming mainly from one side. Maybe its the ablative nozzle that caused the loss? Just speculation here of course.

That's unusual for an unmanned vehicle. Are you saying strictly thrust termination and no destruct?

No explosives.  Only thrust termination.  But an out of controll rocket can still easily explode on its own.

Ablative nosile + hot fire tests = spin maybe ???

Maybe. Also, it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to horizontal for that stage of the ascent.

I'm new, so please forgive my ignorance.
How does the thermal blanket separation work and why is it necessary for the blanket to separate?

I was really hoping that the Falcon would work; very sad to see that it didn't. Did anyone notice that it seemed to be falling horizontally (parallel to the sea), rolling before the feed cut out?

I wish the best to SpaceX and hope they can find out what went wrong as soon as possible.

I think that the Falcon ran itself into the Pacific.

Well, if it is an Ablative failure, that might be a good was for them to fail.  SpaceX already knew that was a possibility, and already has the new regenerative engines almost ready to go.

It sort of reminds me of the first Ariane V ECA launch where the nozzle failed...

Blanket seperates with the help of the wonderful invention of velcro.  The blanket is used to help minimize LOX boil off in the warm weather over there.

It's attached to the vehicle using velcro straps and a lanyard pulls it off during liftoff. If it doesn't come off (or just partially) the loose blanket wreaks havoc on vehicle aerodynamics.

The site doesn't count the number of people who are on the forum correctly. It only counts so many. The server has over 1,000 requests within a second or two during the loss of video and thus it took a minute to get back to speed as it would have acted like a DNS attack  :o  All good now though.

Spaceflightnow are talking about a change in flame colour and shape... Chris, did you record it?

Official Update from Elon Musk:
"We had a successful liftoff and Falcon made it well clear of the launch pad, but unfortunately the vehicle was lost later in the first stage burn.  More information will be posted once we have had time to analyze the problem.  - Elon"

Hmmm. When the Starchaser engine went boom in Las Cruces there was a nice bright orange fireball co-incident with it. It was LOX/Kero also. I got some good shots of it just as it went up.

Anyone who is interested can find those pics here

No, but I wrote about it on the front page of the site 20 minutes ago.

Thanks very much! :)

I couldn't see any change in the flame shape. What I did see was a thin flame coming off the side of the rocket as it rolled. Maybe it was the nozzle failing, I couldn't tell as the video was stuttering and I was losing parts of the image.
