Title: The Orbiter Derived Station, shuttle huggers look away! :-\
Post by: nacnud on 11/10/2017 10:33 AM
Interesting article about a proposed Orbiter Derived Station, I had no idea that this was ever suggested. Intriguing enough to share, caution advised for those that like their shuttles non dismembered.

I have the report on that somewhere. I attended the briefing, ca 1992. They looked at A, B, and C options, this being one of them.

I've heard of that, but not sure I'd ever seen a drawing.  Well, it would've been preferable to... you know...

That and the single-launch space station (that was discarded as "not ambitious enough" by Goldin, IIRC) are among the many might-have-beens.

I might actually buy a shuttle kit and build this one, though.  Blackstar, if you can find that report, I'd love to see it!

Or they could of just built a Shuttle C with Node 1 in the cargo bay I guess...

A good article was written in Wired about this:

Looking at it, it was a really good idea, cheap, quick and would have been, in my opinion, a functional system, maybe even less complex then ISS.

I'd love to have seen shuttle-c and a shuttle-c derived station.

If you think about it, why destroy one asset when they could have gained another launch capability. We possibly could have avoided the gap with a capsule on Shuttle C...

Makes me miss the shuttle, for all its flaws it was a great ship to watch  ;D

"Shuttles aren't Legos." I get the feeling it would have been a little more complex than making a sketch.

I wish we had gone DIRECTly from the Shuttle.  ;)

it would have been none of those items.
Not cheap.  It would have cost more that an orbiter or equivalent ISS parts.   It wasn't serviceable like the current ISS.   Quick?. It wold

Isn't the Orbiter crew cabin leakier by a large margin than a purpose-built ISS module?
