This looks like an awesome book. Many congratulations. What makes it even more awesome is that you're going to SING it! Far braver man than me.

Anatoly proves yet again that nobody finds better illustrations than he does.  The book is almost worth the purchase price from the pictures alone, from what I can see.  I'm glad to see he went with a narrative outline, which I thought was the right way to tell the story of the USSR & Russia's space program.  The N-1 looks rather ridiculous with that many different stages in it.  I'd love to see the simple internals of an Energia next to the N-1's.

Fregate, by any chance, do you know if Anatoly is comparing those two LVs in a diagram in the book?

I'd prefer if this was in a digital format.   If not, I might have to buy this anyway.

Second that - all books I've read in past two years were digital and I'm reading on my tablet. This is especially useful for reference materials as you can SEARCH :)

Forward by "someone famous" !! LOL

Must be the cover artwork needed to be done but they didn't have that nailed down yet (or didn't want to reveal yet)...

Lots of great books coming out!

A colleague just got this book and says it is outstanding. It is still available at the pre-order discount, but probably not for long:

http://www.apogeeprime.com/prime/bookpages/9781926837253.html

Russia In Space is a unique attempt to visualize space exploration¹s future through the eyes of Russian space engineers and to describe that nation¹s plans in space. Based on actual documents, rather than on guesswork, it is the first comprehensive illustrated book dedicated to the Russian vision for the future of manned spaceflight from the dawn of manned spaceflight until today. Lavishly illustrated with images of unparalleled artistic quality and technical accuracy, Russia In Space:

- puts the development of the Russian manned spacecraft into political and historical context;

- uniquely describes the future of space exploration through the eyes of Russian space engineers and planners;

- introduces hitherto unrevealed systems developed for the Russian space program;

- describes past events and future plans in the historical context of the fall and rise of the Russian space program.

All his work is amazing. As soon as I can get a copy I will. Regrettably, the Customs in my country are being something that no filter would allow me to write down.

I now have my coworker's copy in my grubby little hands.

GO BUY THIS BOOK!

What I did not realize is that it is large format. For those of you interested in digital, I'd only say that this is a demonstration of the value of books. Large format, high quality illustrations in high resolution. Looks great.

I thought it seemed a little pricey at first, but it is good quality glossy stock and filled with pictures. I'm a little wary of the binding (I don't know if it will split) but it's a good, heavy book.

Go buy it!

No, he was alerted on Facebook. Buncha people kept congratulating him for such a nice book, and he had to note that he had still not seen the final copy himself...

I believe that he is a registered member of this forum.
IMHO he would be even more informed if he would be a member of L2 section (To Chris Bergin - wink, wink).
Anatoly is off-line by some family reasons, but he asked me to say hello to all posters at NSF,  that he "really flattered and thankful for all the positive feedback".  BTW - he got his printed book from publisher too!

AFAIK A.Zak changed a publisher, Amazon original announcement was for a previous one (his book supposed to be published under Springer-Praxis Space Exploration program).

He forgot to mention also singlehandedly making up for that awful architecture of the Newhouse School at Syracuse University. :)  I still haven't forgiven the architect, but at least Anatoly's work proves the school inside at least produces some quality writers!  Sadly he's been about the only Russian in the US I've ever talked to who's expressed an interest in Russia's space program.  Perhaps that will change when Russia's ambitions in space include manned moon missions.

Small video:  :)

http://www.dailyrecord.com/article/20130810/NJNEWS/308100002/Exploring-Golden-Age-space
AUTHOR EXPLORES the 'Golden Age' of space.
Hmmm I would strongly disagree with such title - IMHO period from 1991 would be classified as "Dark Ages" but not quite a Golden Age of Russian Space Program.

I got my copy today.  Practically the first thing I saw was the Bob Dylan quote on the first page.  "Trying To Get To Heaven Before They Close The Door" from the 1997 album "Time Out Of Mind" (one of my favorites).  Niiice.

I think I'm going to like this book.   ;)

Targeterr, I agree that the glossy paper does enhance the photographs and illustrations, but it makes the reading of the text more difficult. I find myself having to continually adjust the angle of the page to avoid glare.

Having said that the contents of the book make the effort worthwhile.

Still waiting for mine from Amazon. One thing I noticed is my order has an extremely wide delivery estimate, even reaching into October I think from memory. I am surprised as I didn't pick the slowest delivery method.

Russian on Space: an interview with Anatoly Zak

by Dwayne Day
Monday, October 21, 2013

Anatoly Zak has run the best English language website on the Russian space program since the late 1990s. RussianSpaceWeb.com is the place to go for the latest on what is happening in virtually all aspects of the Russian space effort, from commercial launches to human spaceflight to the latest military spacecraft and changes in the organization of the government space bureaucracy. Recently, Zak published a great book, Russia in Space, that is beautifully illustrated and contains a wealth of information on recent and proposed Russian space projects. (See “Review: Russia in Space”, The Space Review, September 30, 2013.) I decided to interview Zak about how he went about writing and illustrating the book.

DD: Tell me about Russia in Space. What is it about? What is the focus of the book?

AZ: It is a visual history of Russian plans in human space flight aiming to reach three major destinations: space stations in low Earth orbit, an expedition to Mars, and a permanent lunar base. The book focuses on the post-Soviet period, however it does describe and illustrate historic roots for these three major “roadmaps” in space flight as far back as the 1950s, as well as sets a political stage in which these projects were conceived and implemented (or not implemented).

DD: When did you decide you wanted to write a book about this subject?

AZ: I started working on it at the end of 2009, when I first had an opportunity to do such a complex and expensive project. However, the book incorporates my illustrative work from around 2004 and journalistic research dating back as far as 1993.

If any of you are in the Boston area, Anatoliy and a box of his books are here today (Thurs Dec 5).
He's giving a talk at Harvard: the Center for Astrophysics, 60 Garden St, Cambridge (Pratt Conf Room) at 12:30.
All are welcome.

I had a fun evening showing off my space library to one of the few who can really appreciate it!

Just ordered my copy for $70, including shipping to the UK. At current exchange rate that's a pretty good deal. I've already had an acknowledgement from the author :)

My copy arrived just before Xmas  :D

Haven't had much time to read it yet, but it looks as amazing as everyone says. Definitely a must buy if you're looking for more recent history of Russian space programme. An instant classic.

Bought this last year on all your recommendations. Beautiful and informative, especially about the many projects that did not fly.

One oddity: the index points to pages beyond 300 but they are not there. Any explanation?

Take it up with Anatoly. Could be index for a possible Volume 2, but cant confirm that, but I do know that he has more planned for the future.
