MSL RTG Heat Haze ?
« on: 03/25/2013 01:10 pm »
I received my copy of Ad Astra magazine today.

On cover is self portrait of MSL.

I noted "streaks" that were inline with the RTG's .

First thought it might be magazine processing fault or even my eyes just giving an optical illusion or just smudges on magazine copy.

But, it looks like it may have been on original image.

So, is it just an "illusion" or could it be heat haze from the RTG's ?

Any ideas ?

It's not "heat haze". That appears to be an amateur enthusiast composition so he probably used raw images instead of calibrated data. There is CCD readout smear visible when a bright object is in the frame and the raw images don't have it removed so it has to be done manually. That looks like a manual effort to remove it.

This is not a theory of mine, I've seen the raw data and played around with it, that explanation is from the MSL team member who works at MSSS and who posts at UMSF.com.

Since posting had JPL confirmation its an artefact of the image  processing.

Oooh!

And NSS And  Astra staff won't like being labelled 'amateur enthusiast composition' but know what you mean ::))
