George Edward Pendray began experimenting with liquid-fuel rockets after meeting with members of Germany's homegrown spaceflight society, the Verein fur Raumschiffahrt (VfR=Society for Space Travel) during a vacation in Europe in 1931, and he was warmly welcomed by the group. The Mirak rocket developed by members of the VfR were used by Pendray to develop his own experimental liquid-fuel rockets.
