No, that was an over sold capability of the shuttle and why that it isn't missed.    HST was sold on the capability when it would have been better off at L2.

GSO is the only orbit where repair makes sense.   Until space launch is really cheap, it is more cost effective to launch a replacement spacecraft

HST would have been useless at L2. It was the best case for LEO servicing there could have been. Maybe not in some worlds of how things should have been, but in the real world where the folks who pay the bills count. It might not have made economic or technical sense considering the money spent, but the fact is, the way it was done worked. Nobody can say any other way would have.
You have to remember who pays the bills. O'Keefe learned that fast enough.

Wrong, it was a compromise to fly in LEO.  Notice that no other telescopes are in LEO.   It was have had better viewing and would have been a lot cheaper at L2.  Cheaper to build another one.  If you are referring to the mirror problem as useless, that is also wrong.  HST still could have provided some science without correction.

Many can say it and are right.

How does TDRS communication function from EML2?

it doesn't, need ground stations

GSO is the only orbit where repair makes sense.

What about MEO or EML1/2?

GSO has a single plane. All your prospective clients are at GSO, so you can keep materiel and instruments there, without paying the plane change tax. MEO, thus, has multiple planes, and thus, is cheaper to send a new craft. There's not a single craft that I know of on EML1 or 2, so I don't see how could you get any business there. May be you mean if there's an eventual station? At which point it the business would be crew and cargo to said station. But the station itself won't be a viable business, as the ISS isn't.

I doubt that it will ever happen but I was wondering how realistic would Dream Chaser on an Ariane 5 be?

P.S. Sirangelo said in a January 2011 BBC blog/article that it would be possible:

Looking at the artist's impression of the Dream Chaser atop the Atlas, it reminds me of the European Hermes shuttle and the way it would have been launched on the Ariane 5 if Esa member states hadn't killed it off. Mark Sirangelo says Dream Chaser would work very nicely off the top of an Ariane. Are you interested Europe?

Lifting Body Air and Spacecraft Q & A

With all the interest generated by Dream Chaser and its direct ancestor the HL-20 and all the other lifting body vehicles, the thread linked below is to discuss, inform and exchange general questions, ideas and answers as to what exactly a Lifting Body is. This is to keep the Dream Chaser threads clean and without clutter and OT topics as things get busier now. :)

A technical question: what would be the difference in design rationale between the X-37B's having a pressurized rubber nose wheel type and Dream Chaser using a skid?

One less failure mode... X-37B seems to be doing fine so far...

So it can fit in a fairing, also it's not carrying people so can be smaller.

Edit: Apparently they are the same size!

Please do find links. Because yes, the wings fold (to fit in a fairing), but otherwhise the main body is supposed to be the same size, as far as I know.

Humm... I think you are right, I could have sworn that the cargo version was smaller, but according to SNC Dream Chaser FAQ

The similarities of the two spacecraft variants include: A Lifting-body spacecraft with the same outer mold line

I thought that it was reduced in size + folding wings to fit in a fairing, apparently not! (Where as the crewed version couldn't be in a fairing due to abort constraints and size.)

IIRC there was very preliminary talk (years ago) of a smaller version being developed for Stratolaunch. Perhaps that's where the confusion came from?

Possibly, that was about 2/3 full size, right?
