The Big Let Down

I'm not always in agreement with you Jim, but I could not agree strongly enough with you on this. So much hype, so little reality.

Considering the existence of a Raptor engine in McGregor, and what information is available (L2) I don't see how this will be a let down unless your expectations are truly and completely absurd.

I'll let Jim explain it. He seems to have an enviable knack for telling it like it is without getting warnings or bannings.

I wish Elon and his Mars plans well - I really, really do. But we're going to find out - as he will - that getting funds, cultural, political and technical support for this venture is going to be a Sisyphus-like uphill climb every day, for fricken years... I can see the cynical, baying, idiot mass-media now; spouting unfunny memes, cartoons and cliches about 'Mad Elon; the Martian' and all the execrable, baying Conspiracy Sheep who don't even believe the I.S.S. or Curiosity are real, let alone the Apollo Landings. Part of me wants to just punch the braying, nasty, cynical clucktards and conspiracists until all the bones in my hands are broken...

...But then I remember that this is a Party Thread!!!  I want Elon to nail his presentation, hit a home run or three and get the general public behind him, in a way it hasn't been since Apollo. I want to see a credible (mostly) Space Architecture LIFT us out of the doldrums of War, terrorism, poverty, corruption, cynicism and mediocrity and give us a Vision worthy of this 21st Century. This bloody IS the 21st Century!! It's way past time to start living 21st Century dreams and goals. The Future has been pounding on our doors for decades - it's time we unchained those doors and let it in.

SPAAAACCEESHIIIIPPP!!! :) :)

I forgot to include party thread worthy material in my last post.

I am rooting for 4 month trips to Titan from Earth, and first manned launch in 2022   :P

"ITS science fiction"

Keeps both the wild-eyed breathless amazing people (like me) and the ardent pragmatists happy, if not the grammar police.

(I don't expect to be disappointed by the ambition of the presentation, but I fully expect to pass from this world still disappointed by the endlessly stretching implementation schedules. Call me the cynical optimist.)

The Big Let Down

I'm not always in agreement with you Jim, but I could not agree strongly enough with you on this. So much hype, so little reality.

I look at it like this. Who is doing the hyping? Is it SpaceX/Musk or everyone else.

Since the only thing SpaceX/Musk have said is announcing his speech, and about three tweets, max 128x3 characters - can't get much hype in there.

So any hype is NOT down to Musk/SpaceX. So therefor doesn't count as company hype.

Therefor, since the hype we have doesn't count because it's just a bunch of people making stuff up who have little or nothing to do with Musk or SpaceX, what actually is there to 'let down'?

Of course, if you do feel let down, don't blame Musk or SpaceX - blame the people who actually 'hype', or yourself, for believing the hype.

I'm just going to wait and see what he says. I've got plenty of patience.
