The Edwin Aldrin.

The guy has been out there pushing Mars exploration since before Musk.

Heh that line of reasoning leads to the USS Zubrin, and I don't think I want that...
So say we all!

Think of MCT as the mother of all dragons, and so won't get that kind of name. Reuseable SpaceX Dragons may have a good claim to individual names. Elsewhere someone has distinguished between capsules (previously not reusable in practice, except, the Excalubur Almaz models) and reuseable space trucks like the shuttle, which did get a name. You would be arguing for increasing the resolution of what smaller reuseable HSF elements get named.

I took exception to the omission of Fafnir and Glaurung.

Ark Ship B

I'm too old to go to Mars and public phones no longer pose a threat to society.

Edit:

That was a joke, but give Elon's sense of humor Ark Ship A and C are both real contenders.

I think that perhaps Botany Bay made the list for another reason...

Guys... stay reasonably close to kind of serious.
"I think it would be great to be born on Earth and to die on Mars. Just hopefully not at the point of impact." -Elon Musk

The Edwin Aldrin.

The guy has been out there pushing Mars exploration since before Musk.

He has legally changed his name to Buzz, you know...

I don't think Aldrin and Zubrin are in any sense equivalent.

My favorite thing to do is brainstorm names for stuff!

Possible MCT vehicle names

Something that says humanity is counting on success for the endeavor:
  Hope
 Unity
  Success

Implies bravery or some other descriptive characteristic:
  Valor
  Intrepid
 Dauntless
 Vigor
 Relevant
 Timeless

Describes what it is or contains:
  Ark
  MarsShip
  TGB (to go beyond)
  Red transport One
  M1
  Loop transport system LTS
  Planet express

Or something of a statement by Elon, (like on the name back of some private ocean vessel)
  Yes I can!
   Mars or bust

To digress, they may also name parts of the ship

The place on the ship they all drink in will have to called ...

Wait for it...

"Bartholomew Gosnold."

He was an early English explorer, the organizer of the Jamestown colony, founder of the Virginia Company, and the leader of the expedition.  It was his vision and drive and organizing ability that brought English public opinion (and royal opinion) in favor of settling the New World.

If he hadn't died 4 months after landing, history may have made little note of Captain John Smith.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartholomew_Gosnold
http://www.historynet.com/bartholomew-gosnold-the-man-who-was-responsible-for-englands-settling-the-new-world.htm

"Gosnold had a timely idea and the persistence, fortune, and connections to make good on that idea." Reminds me of a different visionary industrialist of whom we also know.

Plus it's such a quintessentially space opera-ish sounding name for a spaceship!  "Six months out of Earth orbit we encountered the floating hulk of the Bartholomew Gosnold silently orbiting Mars.  Boarding that shattered vessel was only the beginning of our terrors...."

The Venn set of magic already has Merlin, dragon, draco. The set of flight has draco, dragon, falcon, raptor. The intersection has dragon, draco. One link to a disestablishment song, two to high fantasy, two to franchises centered around magic, one to the apex predator of a class of flying animal. If he remained consistent the MCT would link to magic or flight. One difference, I think, is that MCT is not designed or optimized around utility in LEO. It is uniquely designed or optimized for a Mars destination. It is therefore slightly decoupled from the sets of terms so far, or, it introduces a new set that includes characteristics of Mars.

The Quest. Would be in keeping with the set of magic and high fantasy.
The Sienna. Ports a characteristic of Mars.
The Sedona. Ports an earth analogue of a 'green Mars'. Easier than saying "Ayers Rock".

For any new engine or capsule post raptor, draco or dragon, Thunderbird. It occupies both sets of flight and of magic.

/snip

Merlin is also a type of small falcon and should therefore be in the intersection as well.  Source.  Though, I guess you could make the argument that the 2 merlins aren't the same (i.e. the magician and the bird are different).

Phoenix, Benu, Fuma, Firebird for its fiery 1000+ km flying re-entry on Mars?

Or famous meteorites that landed intact: Agpalilik, Bacubirito, Ahnighito, El Chaco, Hoba, Mbosi, Willamette
