« on: 08/23/2013 10:17 pm »
Greetings everyone!
As you can tell, I am a newbie to the forum and you all are already a family.. of pros :) So, I apologize in advance if I have posted this thread in the incorrect section or are repeating a topic.. Im learning! Ive been reading the amazing posts here for quite sometime and have finally built the courage to share a little. A few years back I wrote a lovely paper about Judy for an English assignment in college. I have an amazing collection of photos and info about Dr. Resnik that i would like to share with you all... If you all are interested, just let me know and I will continue to post! Also, I would love to see and/or read your photos, quotes or stories about our beloved J.R.!
Thanks!!

Very nice. I remember reading a fascinating magazine article about Resnik and her life sometime after 51-L, which I will try and locate at some point - seems like she was pretty awesome, I'm sorry I never got to meet her.

Thanks, Ash!  Very nice tribute.

If I'm remembering correctly, while Judy was not the first American woman in space, I believe she was the first person -- of any gender -- of the Jewish faith to fly in space.  In this irrationally divided and contentious world, I think that is a rather special thing.

Although I think Boris Volynov was the first ethnically Jewish person in space, I am not sure about his religious beliefs

Thank you Doug! Glad you are enjoying this!

I believe you are correct! From what I have read on Judy, she wanted to simply be reffered to as an astronaut. She didnt like the 'female' or 'Jewish' labels that were attatched to her.

I had a strong crush on Judy Resnik.  I had to sit down when Tom Brokaw started to cry as he talked about just having sent her flowers.

She was a remarkable woman, an astronaut, a concert-quality pianist, and just plain mentally "present".  I used to love watching her eyes in interviews, because she was just so obviously all there, and then some.

She was lovely.

It was she who turned on her own PEAP, then crept forward in the falling cabin and turned on those of Mike Smith and Frank Scobee.

Thanks for the tribute.  It should be mentioned that all of those folks, not just Ms. Resnik, were pretty stellar.

There is an awesome clip of Judy and Brokaw covering a shuttle flight together on the NBC learn website.. You should check it out! It is from 1981 i believe. Its worth a look!

Judy said that sleeping in space was quite comfortable and compared the sleeping arrangements to that of a 'summer camp' style. She was the only crew member not to endure the lower back pain that is commonly experienced in space, stating that she was 'the first woman to go to bed with 5 guys all of whom had back aches." :)

According to Mullane, Judy chose not to wear her anti-G suit upon reentry and suffered a bit ..
"She was deathly pale, sweating profusely, and unable to stand from her seat for many minutes."

Well, I shall call it quits for the night. I hope you all enjoyed my little pictorial tribute to Dr. Judith Arlene Resnik. I will resume tomorrow with my photos of the Challenger training... so be sure to bring your box of tissues :(
I will leave you with a hysterical article written by Mike Coats about a funny incident that happened to the 41-D crew.. Thank yous to Ares67 for the link.
Enjoy and goodnight my fellow space junkies!

41-D was the first Shuttle mission I worked (payload processing) and the first Shuttle I watched lift off in person (after also watching the abort).  51-L was the last I worked and witnessed.  I don't think that I've realized until just now that Judy was a common denominator.

...I apologize in advance if I have posted this thread in the incorrect section or are repeating a topic...
No need to apologize, sharing such information is a big part of what this forum is all about, whether it's celebrating a person or a piece of hardware.

Im baaaack! I apologize for my tardiness on finishing my little tribute to Judy.. I had an allergic reaction to a perscription of antibiotics from the dentist.. Eek! Imagine, if you will, that Violet from Willy Wonkas' name was Cherry... "Cherry, youre turning cherry, Cherry!!" Haha! That should give you a little visual as to my appearance yesterday. So, i wanted to wait until I was less 'fuzzy headed' to finish my thread. Oh, and thank you for the positive responses! It is very lovely to have a group of people who are eager to hear and see my catalogue of Dr. Resniks' life. (My friends are uninterested in my fascination of NASA)  ;)

Shall we continue??

First off, let me include a few of Judys accomplishments up to the launch of 41D. I wont include what little information I have of her personal life. She was a very private person. Even her father once said that he didnt really 'know' Judy as a child and even later as an adult.. But her slew of accomplishments in her short life were very impressive! I send her a personal 'thank you' because my research into her life and accomplishments for a college english assignment, had a lot to do with my change in majors.. From Art to Aeronautical science with a concentration in electrical engineering. I found my purpose, thank you Judy!

- Born in Akron, Ohio on April 5, 1949 to Jewish parents, JR could read and do simple math before she entered school. This allowed Judy to skip kindergarten and enroll in 1st grade at the age of 5.

- As a youth, she rolled her hair in orange juice cans at night to staighten her curls. :)

- She was a member of the French club, NHS and Math club ( the only girl amongst 15 boys).

- Judy was valedictorian of Firestone Highs' class of 1966 and achieved a perfect SAT score ( the sole female to do so that year). There is a photo in her yearbook of two rows of girls at a pep rally. Every girl is clapping, except for Judy, who is sitting in the back with a stack of books on her lap. :) hehe

- Her parents divorced when Judy was 17 and, as was accustomed at the time, her mother was given custody. Judy comprised and presented her own case to present to the court and custody was transferred to her father. (Impressive!)

- She had a younger brother Charles and two older twin stepsisters. They were very close and each wore identical necklaces with the sign language symbol for I Love You. This necklace was later found in the wreckage of the crew compartment after the Challenger disaster.

- She was a classically trained pianist stating ("I never play anything softly.")

- She entered Carnegie Mellon (now tech) intending on majoring in Math. After attending an electrical engineering class with her then boyfriend, she changed majors and graduated in 1970 with a BA in electrical engineering.

- During this time she was briefly married to Michael Oldak whom stating that Judy had a fierce sense of humor and that he once took her to Kennywood.. At first she was hesitant to ride the roller coasters.. But after she rode one, she wouldnt leave until she had rode them all. :) the two remained great friends after the divorce and he was present at the launch of 41D.

- She received her PhD from the University of Maryland in 1977 and worked for such companies as RCA, National Institute of Health and Xerox before applying to be an astronaut after reading a memo on the bulletin board at work.

- She was a gourmet cook but went on a strict diet after being selected as a astronaut canidate.

- Judy earned two 100s and a 98 on her pilots exams and was working on her license prior to her death.

- Was an avid sports fan. Her favorite team? The Cleveland Indians!

- Judy was described by her fellow astronauts as 'smart and dependable with a wicked sense of humor' and as 'an astronauts, astronaut.'

- She cared for a stray dog during her time at Carnagie Mellon. The dogs name was Alissa and she took the dog tag with her on her first trip to space with the 41D crew.

- JR logged 144 hours and 57 minutes in space aboard the orbiter Discovery.

Once again, I apologize for any errors here. Feel free to correct! I am writing this based entirely of my own memory..
Now we head into training for the 51-L mission!

Shortly after completing her first mission with the 41-D crew, Judy was assigned her second mission as a mission specialist aboard the shuttle Challenger. Flying with her this time were..
Commander Dick Scobee
Pilot Mike Smith
Payload specialst Greg Jarvis
Fellow mission specialists Ellison Onizuka and Ronald McNair
And..
The first private citizen to fly into space, Christa McAuliffe. Winner of the Teacher in Space Project (Barbara Morgan was selected as backup for Christa.)

Judy would once again be operating the robotic arm on this mission and deploying a satellite designed to study Halleys Comet, which was then approaching earth. I read somewhere that Judys insignia next to her name was an image of the comet and Christas was an apple :)

I truely hope you all enjoyed my tribute to Dr. Resnik.. It was my honor to share it with you all!! Please feel free to share any facts, quotes or photos about our beloved J.R. She will forever be an amazing asset to NASA and such an inspiration to myself and many others :) I will leave you with a lovely quote from her close friend and NASA contractor Robert Stevens..

"The last words she said was the night before on the Astronaut telephone links to families where she was sequestered, “see ya in a week, green eyes,” a moniker for me in that she always loved my green eyes so she said.

I saw her last as she came out of the astro lodge and into the astrovan on her way to the pad and her ship. I shouted to her. She shouted back for which I did not hear, and blew me a kiss.

The fireball erupted at 73 seconds. A thing both fascinating and frightening, a cancer-colored nightmare unfolding in the dark cobalt skies above the world’s first true spaceport. It was failing before my eyes, before the nation’s, before the people of the world. The sum total of our achievement, now spiraling in a tendril of uncommon fiery arcs, surging back toward the ocean surface, now 7 miles below the disintegrating craft. My mouth began to open as did everyone else’s. All forward motion had ceased. The vehicle was gone now.

We do not see death like this among loved ones. Generally it is a knock on the door in the night. We are informed that uncle Jack or whomever has plowed into a light pole, or a heart attack stopped him. We are not used to seeing a loved one right on the cusp of the grandest adventure of all time, soaring in complete personal, professional, national triumph, on the world’s first true space ship, right at the height of utter triumph. Then vanish. One second, triumph. The next second, literally disappear in a orange fog of searing terror. A fireball. Seared into the brain forever. The great ship was dead and gone and was falling delicately in pieces back down to Earth's second largest ocean.

For months and even into the second year, I cried for Judy, for NASA, for everyone in our wonderful country, and for me. I wanted Judy back. I wanted Challenger to not fall down. The gulf of years quickly fall behind me now as I entrain forward in life between me and this thing. But every January 28th, at 11:37 AM, I pause for just a moment. The pain and terror, oddly, are the same, for just a moment, but her face is cloudy now as I remember it. I remember the fireball, but I can't remember exactly the lines of her face or her soft watery dark eyes. Perhaps tears make the view blurry in memory as I stare back across such dark gulfs in time.

Every year, I pause for just a moment. In those moments the crushing sadness is very great. And I never wanted to miss a thing. It was a grand time. It was a time of being invincible. For 73 seconds, whether she knew it or not, wanted to or not, she was on the edge of a still very raw technology, hanging her hide along with 6 others right out over the Yawning Red Maw. For 73 seconds, she was a pioneer, an explorer, an astronaut. A very fine woman. She was there in that thing, that beautiful space ship, surging ahead in that Ahura Mazda Surge that few of us ever will know or feel in this lifetime, moving vertically at 4900 feet per second. Surging at 3600 miles per hour, going up, ship screaming with all motors running nominal. Triumph at full bore acceleration. Rising up with all engines running at 104%. Right at, “Challenger, Go For Throttle Up.” And then she went away."

That fateful walk to board the Challenger. She carried with her a locket for her niece and a ring for her nephew.
My O&C office overlooked this exit, so I witnessed this scene on January 28.  I also watched the shocked family members being escorted back through those doors a few hours later.

It was an awful day - the worst day, a day I try not to dwell on - but something that has lingered is the memory of that crew walking out that morning.  They weren't just happy and smiling, they were exuberant.  They were exactly where they wanted to be, doing exactly what they wanted to do.

Wonderful pictures. Hope you don't mind, but here's a bit of info that I gleaned about Resnik whilst researching her life:

“At the contractors’ factories, we also did some ‘widows and orphans’ appearances,” wrote Mike Mullane, “passing out ‘Maiden Voyage of Discovery’ safety posters to the workers.” Judy Resnik had joked that there were certainly no maidens on this mission! In Riding Rockets, Resnik herself is presented as a tragi-comic figure – tragic in terms of her estrangement from her mother and, of course, her untimely death aboard Challenger, but intensely witty in her interactions with others; her romantic crush on actor Tom Selleck became the stuff of banter among fellow astronauts. “Flirtatious, funny…just a live wire,” was classmate Rhea Seddon’s summary of her. Yet she was an outstanding over-achiever.

Born Judith Arlene Resnik in Akron, Ohio, on 5 April 1949, she was the progeny of a first-generation Jewish-Russian family. Her father, Marvin, was an optometrist and part-time cantor, whilst her mother, Sarah, was a former legal secretary. Soon after entering kindergarten Resnik was able to read and solve simple mathematical problems. She and her younger brother, Charles, received Hebrew schooling and her teachers described as bright, disciplined, personable and a perfectionist. It was whilst at school that she developed her love for mathematics and classical piano. She achieved the highest possible score – 800 – on the mathematics component of her SAT test, graduated from Firestone High School in Akron in 1966 and was accepted into the Carnegie Institute of Technology to study electrical engineering. (By the time she completed her degree in 1970, the institute had been renamed ‘Carnegie-Mellon University’.)

She was initially hesitant about entering engineering, since it was not traditionally a female career path, but realised that her aptitude for mathematics and the sciences would carry her through. “Maybe I liked it,” she once said, “because I was good in it.” Shortly after graduation, she married a fellow engineering student, Michael Oldak, but the pair divorced in 1974. During her short married life, she was employed by RCA, working on custom integrated circuitry for phased-array radar control systems and the specification, project management and evaluation of control systems. She also undertook work for NASA sounding rocket and telemetry programmes.

Resnik later joined the National Institutes of Health as a biomedical engineer and staff fellow, working in the neurophysiology laboratory in Bethesda, Maryland, and at the same time commenced work on her doctorate in electrical engineering. She received her PhD from the University of Maryland in 1977 and joined Xerox as a senior systems engineer.

In Riding Rockets, Mike Mullane noted that Resnik’s first exposure to the space programme and the idea of becoming an astronaut appeared that same year, when she first saw an announcement on the Xerox bulletin board. To Mullane, it underlined the reality that many women had grown up in society, totally closeted and unaware of the possibility that such careers were available, on the basis of gender or colour. In fact, one of the recruiters who drew Resnik to NASA was the African-American actress Nichelle Nichols, famed for her role alongside William Shatner in ‘Star Trek’. Nichols began by affiliating her company, Women in Motion, with the space agency, although its focus extended to ethnic minorities, too, and led to the selection of Resnik and Sally Ride, Guy Bluford and Ron McNair and inspired a number of others, including Mae Jemison, who in 1992 became the first black American woman in space.

When Resnik was selected as one of the first six female astronauts in January 1978, it was widely expected that either she or Sally Ride would be the first to fly. In fact, Rhea Seddon remarked in her oral history that Resnik and Ride received “the sorts of technical assignments that really prepared them for flight”, such as RMS work and capcom duties. “I think most of us felt it would be Sally or Judy.” To Resnik, as one of the 41D crew members, it mattered little. Being a woman astronaut or the second American woman astronaut or the first Jewish woman astronaut was as insignificant as saying that she was “the 40th or 45th…American astronaut to go on the Space Shuttle in a period of a couple of years”. Resnik was simply amazed at how far the space programme had evolved in just a handful of years.

Oh wow Ed, thank you for sharing. I can not imagine how that experience must have been for you.. Did you ever meet Judy during your time at KSC?
I don't remember meeting Judy, but I'm sure I saw her in our building a time or two.  I worked payload processing.  The Mission Specialists would participate in the payload integration tests that we performed in the VPF and O&C Buildings.  They would be out on the test stands flipping switches while we were buried in our control room mimicking ground control during the tests.  Occasionally they would visit our control room or we would be allowed a meet and greet as a morale booster.  I did meet Sally Ride and Cathy Sullivan and others.  Sally spent a good bit of time with us one day when a test of ERBS (STS-41G) was stalled by data communications issues.  She wanted to know *exactly* what was happening and why, down to the bit level.

Mike Mullane's book Riding Rockets has been mentioned in this thread already but I want to recommend it as well. He knew Judy Resnik very well and the two were good friends. She features prominently in the book and its pretty clear she was a quite remarkable individual.

There was an article which was published in Esquire magazine many years ago about Judy.  From what I remember her parents were at constant war with one another before and after their divorce.  Her mother was never consulted about what to do with Judy's remains and at the time of the article had no idea what had become of them.

In high school she began to date a guy named Len Nahmi who claims that it was he who heard about the astronaut selection and encouraged her to apply.  He says that he helped train her so she could be in physical shape and also gave her his flying books so she could study for her piloting exam.

Apparently Judy took his cigarette lighter up on Challenger and the article notes that Nahmi sued NASA for loss of property.  I can't find the article on line but if anyone can find it, it's a pretty good read and gives a great description of the woman behind the astronaut label.

Judy worked at RCA Missile and Surface Radar at Moorestown, NJ a few years before I did.  Our group designed hybrid circuitry for the AEGIS Phased Array radar systems.

I was at RCA that day we lost the Shuttle and those fine people.  There was a hushed eerie silence that day.  Stunned disbelief.

I heard this story about Judy told by 41-D Commander Hartsfield. (It was a gathering of most of the remaining crew so it may have been someone else but memory says it was the Commander.)

41-D had an Imax camera. They had left the gear and chain cover behind to save weight. Judy's hair was a globe of hair in weightlessness. So, as the camera was running, her hair was ingested by the Imax.

The Commander said she was able to describe her trouble with words even an old Navy salt had not heard in his travels. They extricated her and she swore eveyone to secrecy.

Next morning wake up music was 'Hair'.

Yeah, I know this one. Hartsfield also shared this story with his STS-61A crew members. Needless to say, the story then percolated down to some press folks given that STS-61A was a high-profile mission in both Germany and the Netherlands. It was one of those journalists that told me about the little IMAX-meets-hair incident on 41-D.

Check out this link to get an idea where Judy's hair got caught.

Oh yes Judy Resnik. After reading Riding Rockets and even more after reading this thread, I think I'd've liked her if I'd known her. Somehow, any time I see a video or something about STS-51-L, I have this urge to shout HOLD HOLD HOLD as if I were a launch control officer. Unbelievably sad what happened that day.

Actually, when I received my PhD, during the graduation ceremony we were given that very example for how an engineer should behave - and how not. To conclude with Feynman:

"Reality should always take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled!"

R.I.P. Judy and the rest of STS-51-L!

Still thinking warmly of her all these years later.

She was, indeed, stunningly beautiful. As for her character - I would say "it was complicated". Well actually it was the overall situation that was complicated.

Let's have a glance at the women that were part of the TFNG in 1978. Each one was singular and got her how peculiar history. Their situation was not exactly easy.
In fact it was extremely polarized. One one side was Sally Ride, a natural born leader and strongly on the feminist side - she was an accointance of Gloria Steneim. And this clashed head-on with NASA / astronaut culture, which was even in 1978 a lot of macho bull, The Right Stuff style.

Sally Ride herself was a complex human being, with some difficult internal contradictions that were probably very painful. I will no go further down this path, this is private life.

All six others were mostly stuck between the two ends, doing their best to handle an ackward in-between status.

Where thing goes interesting is that each single of them handled that her own way.

Shannon Lucid and Katy Sullivan were not really affected by all this, focused on their missions and careers and surely enough, fully succeded. Lucid was the one that flew the most, including a memorable long duration trip to Mir.

Rea Sheddon was another interesting case. She was a surgeon, and as such, she was pretty much "prepared" to the test pilots somewhat crass attitude to women - because physicians and surgeons are somewhat similar (see the case of France very own Michel Cymès, one of the more sexist pigs ever on TV)
Sheddon dated and married Hoot Gibson, who, according to Mike Mullane, was one hell of a prankster as far as women went.

Anna Fisher was the first astronaut ever to be pregnant, and her husband Bill Fisher was an astronaut, too. So it was the astronaut family.

And, at the end of the list, remain Judy Renisk. From what we know (then again, private life) she had some difficulties with her family - some tensions over faith and some others about her early failed marriage.

Her sheer beauty (all too visible on the above pictures) had some unnerving side effects. Mullane tells how every single man in a room, be it a politician, an astronaut, or... a stalker, was just kind of hypnotized. Of politicians dropping cigarettes and drinks and pumping her hand over and over just to be on a press photo with her by their side. While showing next to zero interest for the male astronauts standing in line near Resnik. They were just... transparent. Invisible.
And Resnik was stalked, actually, by some nut.
So Resnik had some good reasons to show some kind of nervousness at times. Overall, her situation was not easy.

For most of the TFNG women astronauts, it was quite unsettling to be trapped between two such polarized cultures. The press really did not helped, and neither did NASA.

Sometimes it could be pretty ackward, like when in 1985 NASA flew a Saudi prince, and one of the woman astronauts was to go to Saudi Arabia to help preparing that flight. That country archaic and backward culture (even today, cutting diplomats into pieces...) couldn't handle or even figure an independant woman and even less a woman astronaut.
So NASA and Saudi Arabia found a compromise: she was to enter the country declared as... a men, so that she could kept her independance, I mean, not be accompanied by a men everywhere she went. You guess, the test pilot astronaut culture had a field day.

And when the shuttle toilet failed right in the middle of a mission, it was even more complicated and awfully ackward, because men and women are not similar in that regard - let's say men have an easier time when peeing in zero-G, for obvious reasons - condoms, for a start.
Yet Resnik reasoned that if the Shuttle mission was interrupted because of THAT, then the press would jump on it, with all kind of consequences.
So she - heroically - decided to endure the "Apollo bags" as if she was a man. You can only guess how it was a rather painful and unhappy experience. Yet that was the kind of complicated, tortured reasoning early women astronauts faced. Later generations had easier times.

... and well, if that post make some people uneasy, then the moderators are free to nuke it into oblivion.

Zoo crew. The name only speaks volume. All this because of Tarzan. Steve Hawley was Cheetah. Mullane was Tarzan. Resnik, obviously, was Jane.
Incidentally, Mike Coats looked uncannily like Christopher Reeves's Superman.
Hank Hartsfield being the mission commander, he become the zookeeper.  Make sense.

Charles Walker was a kind of outsider, although he was well respected since his company was related to aerospace, so flying with his satellite made sense to the astronaut corps. Much more than teacher-in-space or worse, journalist-in-space.
Considering the antics of Zoo crew, he must have wondered, at times, about the sanity of NASA astronaut corps, notably the efficiency of their pyschological screening.  ;D

Thank you @Ash41D for starting this magnificent topic and to everyone who has contributed so many wonderful pictures and stories and remembrances of our beloved Judy.  Three days ago, on a whim, I thought to search the University of Maryland Digital Archives for "Resnick" (spelled incorrectly with a 'c') and incredibly several photos of Judy came back, none of which I had seen before.  Moreover, the resolution of the images is remarkable.  I post them here for posterity.  All credit to the University of Maryland Digital Archives Collection.
