Too bad the antenna never looked like that in space.

Galileo's plutonium battery was a concern for anti-nuclear activists, but Atlantis was given a "go"

And Atlantis not only had to dodge that bullet: Hurricane Hugo threatened NASA officials enough to consider a rollback from the launch pad. An engine control unit failure in SSME No. 2 delayed the first launch attempt on October 12, 1989. Dark clouds above the Shuttle Landing Facility led to another 24h postponement on October 17. And then an earthquake hit California, slightly damaging the IUS Control Center at Onizuka AFB in Sunnyvale. But on the morning of October 18 Sunnyvale proclaimed itself "go for launch". So the astronauts were sent out to the pad - and this time they had more luck...

PAO: Roll maneuver initiated, about a 110 degree roll maneuver. Guidance confirms a good roll maneuver. Three engines throttling back now to 65 percent as Atlantis passes through the area of maximum dynamic pressure. Throttle's now at 65 percent. APUs looking good.

CapCom: Atlantis, go at throttle up.

PAO: Engines now back to 104 percent. All systems performing well. Standing by for separation of the solid rocket boosters at two minutes and four seconds. Velocity now 2700 ft per second, downrange ten nautical miles...

At MECO CapCom told Don Williams: "You looked marvelous going up!"

That was a good start. Now came the next important part: Deploying Galileo.

Williams: Deploy on time, Houston. The spacecraft is stable. Galileo is on it's way to another world. It's in the hands of the best flight controllers in the world. Fly safe.

CapCom: Roger, Atlantis, we copy. That's great news. Thanks.

Crew Activities - Science

Franklin Chang-Diaz told Countdown Magazine (Jan 1990): "Once Galileo was safely on its way and they told us it was doing pretty well, we got down to some other nitty-gritty hands-on science." (...) "After we get rid of Galileo, everything that we call secondary is now primary."

Quote taken from Countdown Magazine (Jan 1990):

"This was a picture that was unexpected bounty - a view of the Aurora Australis, the southern lights", Franklin Chang-Diaz recalls. "A lot of the solar material (from the storm) gets trapped by the Earth's magnetic field and drifts to the poles of the Earth. As soon as it contacts the molecules of air, it gives you a very interesting display of colors and light. We could see this phenomenon throughout a couple of days. We saw it start, we saw it's peak and we saw it decrease in intensity." Chang-Diaz, a plasma physicist, was delighted at observing a phenomenon in his field of training.

(Countdown Magazine, Jan 1990, page 14)

Nice to be home
The morning of October 23 brought something stranger than a shuttle to the dry lakebeds of Edwards Air Force Base - a deep blanket of fog.

Atlantis would need to fire its OMS engines at about 8:30 am PDT in order to glide to a landing an hour later. Yet with under a half hour to go before the burn, the fog was still a question mark, even as it was burning off.

At 8:19 am, the CapCom passed along the word, "the lakebed is go and you are go for the deorbit burn." The twin OMS engines fired for 2 min 48 sec, sending Atlantis toward a destination of lakebed runway 23.

"The reentry was spectacular, as I remember it before - the fire outside the windows during the early part of reentry, a sense of tremendous speed as you travel accross the surface of the Earth from 400,000 ft to 200,000, the rush of the ground coming up as the spacecraft approaches the runway", says Don Williams, who had flown as pilot on Mission 16 (51-D) in 1985.
