Skylark sounding rocket
« on: 04/14/2011 10:26 am »
Does anyone have any good photos / reference material on the "Skylark" sounding rocket?

(Wikipedia page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylark_(rocket) )

There are a few photos out on the web, but making a very detailed CGI model has been on my todo list for a while, and I'd really like something better to work from!

As so many were made and launched, you'd think the info was out there somewhere...

Thanks, Nick

[May not help with the OP's question, but seemed best to post here]

Quote
Skylark: The unsung hero of British space
It's 60 years to the day that Britain launched its first Skylark rocket.

It wasn't a big vehicle, and it didn't go to orbit. But the anniversary of that first flight from Woomera, Australia, should be celebrated because much of what we do in space today has its roots in this particular piece of technology.

"Skylark is an unsung British hero really," says Doug Millard, space curator at London's Science Museum.

"The first one was launched during the International Geophysical Year of 1957, and almost 450 were launched over the better part of half a century. It was the Skylark space rocket that really laid the foundations for everything the UK does in space."

Millard is opening a corner of the museum's Space Gallery to the memory of the Skylark...

Thank You!

I went to see it yesterday... It's rather a small exhibit, but not bad.

I did a bit more searching when I got back, and found that since I asked there's a new book out:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Britains-First-Space-Rocket-Skylark/dp/0992989604

700 pages of it!
I have ordered it, and am waiting impatiently for delivery...

Nick
