Chinese sub-orbital launches
« on: 09/25/2010 08:10 am »
Three NOTAMs were issued for today in China:

(already cancelled)

Quote
A7648/10 - THE SEGMENT CLSD:30KM BOTH SIDES OF LINE BTN POINT A (N385013E1113622) AND POINT B (N392923E1073035). SFC - UNL, 25 SEP 08:30 2010 UNTIL 25 SEP 09:07 2010. CREATED: 25 SEP 06:56 2010

Quote
A7627/10 - A TEMPORARY RESTRICTED AREA ESTABLISHED BOUNDED BY N3830E11200-N3910E11200-N4200E8600-N4100E8600 BACK TO START. VERTICAL LIMITS: SFC-UNL.ALL ACFT ARE PROHIBITED TO FLY INTO THE AREA. SFC - UNL, 25 SEP 08:40 2010 UNTIL 25 SEP 08:55 2010. CREATED: 23 SEP 10:07 2010

The latter closed a strip from Taiyuan to Korla. Maybe a missile launch with or without an ABM test.

"A U.S. official confirmed that China's military fired a missile from the  Taiyuan missile center, about 320 miles southwest of Beijing, to Korla,  a city in western China some 1,800 miles away."

And this is not the first such case. Another unknown launch was included into the footage of Shijian-6-04 launch on October 6, 2010:

It may well be just operator's training

It seems that the flight path leads southwards from Taiyuan and not westwards to Korla. If this is true then it is not an ABM launch.

AFAIU, the legend of the picture reads:
 "Recently circulated online screenshot of CCTV report on anti-missile interception test from Taiyuan anti-missile base."

Very interesting. An ICBM test launch from TSLC? DF-31?

If that helps, an additional NOTAM seemed linked to the event:

  A0968/11 - THE FLW SEGMENTS OF ATS RTE CLSD: 1.V16: ATBUG-DENGKOU VOR 'DKO'. 2.A596:YABRAI VOR 'YBL'-DENGKOU VOR 'DKO'. 20 JUL 02:25 2011 UNTIL 20 JUL 03:00 2011. CREATED: 19 JUL 14:32 2011

Waypoints coordinates:
ATBUG =  40°59'24.00"N  104°26'0.00"E

DENGKOU =  40°18'9.00"N  107° 0'0.00"E

YABRAI =  39°25'7.00"N 102°46'3.00"E

User kktt on the 9ifly chinese space forum supposed it could be a Julang-2 SLBM launch from Dalian, with the eastern area for 1st stage and the western one for the 2nd stage and warhead.
(If so, it would feature direct overflight of Tianjin, a city as large as New York.)

AFAIU, this user infers that the trajectory passed in the middle of the Bohai Sea (South of Dalian) in order not to overfly major cities like Beijing and Tianjin.

Yes, but the map presented by kktt clearly shows overflight of Tianjin.

Well, is is interesting to note that Shijian-11-03 passed in the vicinity of Dalian, the suspected launch area, on July 20 at 02:43 UTC.

For early warning calibration?

If a launch from Bohai sea area was intended, why no NOTAM was issued for this area?

First, I can't say there was no NOTAM for the Bohai sea since I didn't check NOTAMs for the FIR where the Northern part of the Bohai Sea is located.
Second, there might well have been no NOTAM for the launch area: this is the case for all CZ launches from XSLC, TSLC and JSLC (AFAIK, there are even no NOTAMS for the dropped CZ-3B/3C first stages or second stages).
