Spoke too soon yesterday.  We are getting pounded here in Norfolk.  I lost power at about 7 PM last night, but it returned at about 2 AM this morning.  I'm hoping that that was the only power loss we suffer.

This storm is going to have a significant effect even here in the midwest.  The National Weather Service has issued Great Lakes Gale and Storm Warnings.  The predicted wave heights on the Lakes are as follows:

Superior: Excess of 20 feet
Huron: Excess of 20 feet
Michigan: 10 to 18 feet by Monday afternoon
build to 20 to 33 feet on Tuesday

I think the 33 might be an exaggeration, but a road trip might be worthwhile for some good pics!

Indeed, I am in central Ohio and we are under the outskirts of Sandy. Nothing too bad yet just grey and a bit windy. Its just mind boggling how big this hurricane is. We are pretty far inland here and the eye hasn't even made landfall on the coast.

They don't mince words in New Jersey!

National Weather Service in New Jersey:

"If you are reluctant [to evacuate], think about your loved ones, think about the emergency responders who will be unable to reach you when you make the panicked phone call to be rescued, think about the rescue/recovery teams who will rescue you if you are injured or recover your remains if you do not survive."

Governor of Connecticut just said to people still in the Mandatory Evacuation Areas: "Don't be stupid. Get out now while you can. I will not send anybody in to get you until after the storm passes. Leave NOW. I will not risk emergency responders' lives to rescue someone stupid enough to stay in a place they were ordered to leave."

Since Enterprise is basically sitting in a glorified tent, what is the plan to keep her protected with Sandy coming in towards NY? Especially with her sitting on a boat which will no doubt be affected by high surge and waves.

I found this on the web: the webcam for the Intrepid:

http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/getdoc/c175244a-aeb1-4ee8-9024-9bb15e3dd11f/Live-Webcams.aspx

Edited to add: a list of webcams I found on the 'net:

http://qz.com/20761/watch-these-webcams-as-hurricane-sandy-hits-the-us-east-coast/

Stay safe and fingers crossed for all affected!
If memory serves me right, USS Alabama suffered significant damage from Katrina.  Katrina was a much stronger hurricane than Sandy, but am curious as to how the Intrepid will fair, and the aircraft (and spacecraft...Enterprise) will hold up....Sandy currently has 90 MPH winds.

Praying for those being affected by Sandy.  Be safe.

In the words of New York Senator Chuck Schumar after political payback was given to New York....I mean after New York got the vehicle by open and fair means.....

"fo-get a-bout it".

Katrina, as powerful as she was, was in and out of there in ~14 hours. Sandy will be around for ~36 hours because the same trough that sucked her in off the sea dead ends in the Appalachians. That's where she will sit for a while until local lows start shifting her back towards the northeast for round 2 through Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Of course she won't be a hurricane by then but will still be a very powerful storm system, dumping several inches of rain as she goes.

What about the Enterprise? They're expecting up to possibly 11 foot storm surge, anyone know if any precautions were taken for her on the Intrepid, or do they feel it is unnecessary?

Emergency responder in New Jersey joke. "How many cinder blocks does it take to ballast a portable 6 foot satellite dish in 70mph winds?"

I live at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, 9 blocks from the boardwalk.  Haven't lost power yet (tap, tap on fake wood product).

Lots of wind, lots of rain.

On the outskirt of the storm up here in MA, been watching parts blow off the greenhouse all day.

The one good thing about having a small town owned municipal utility is they spend every summer aggressively cutting trees out of the power lines. If they can see the tree, it might not make it through the summer ;)

There are now evacuations along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin due to 14 to 18 foot waves expected by morning.

Someone in NY just reported (2 hours ago) that the cover has been torn off of the Shuttle.  The good news is.... that means the pier hasn't been flooded so badly that everything got washed away... and I assume the carrier and everything on it are somewhat ok if the cover being blown off is the worst so far.  But of course, there will be all sorts of debris flying around, and water getting into everything... not fun.  I hope the Enterprise survives the winds ok unprotected, she should be able to since she was a glide test article, right?  =\

Poor Enterprise! At least she's still covered.

How bad the deflation is depends on whether it's due to loss of power or not.  It sounds like Lower Manhattan is kind of messy right now.

As important as we hold these vehicles, they aren't a primary concern today.

Poor Enterprise! At least she's still covered.

And even if she was uncovered it would not matter all that much. Remember, Enterprise spent some time at display at KSC (september 1985 to November 1985) out in the open, exposed to the elements.
