International Space Station (ISS) Management Center (IMC) Daily Summary Report
Increment 36 Operations – Stage 36-3
05/16/13 4:00 pm Central Daylight Time (CDT)
136/21:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

New Status:
Binary Colloidal Alloy Test (BCAT)-4: Cassidy configured and deployed the BCAT-4 sample module.  The BCAT-4 module is being revisited after being undisturbed for several years to see the condition of the sample and their mixing status.  BCAT-4 is an experiment of two samples containing microscopic spheres suspended in a liquid which are designed to determine how crystals can form from the samples after they have been well mixed. The two samples have the same average sphere size but one of them has a wider range (more polydisperse) of sizes in order to demonstrate the dependence of crystallization on particle size range. Results from these experiments help scientists develop fundamental physics concepts which will enable the development of a wide range of next generation technologies (such as in high speed computers and advanced optical devices).

Station Support Computer (SSC) Ultra Bay Hard Drive Installation: Cassidy installed additional hard drives on the crew assigned SSCs.  These additional hard drives will be used to backup crew personal data in advance of a software patch and ensure that there is enough data storage space for the upcoming 35 Soyuz crew.

Seedling Growth On-Board Training (OBT): In advance of the upcoming Seedling Growth activities, Cassidy reviewed OBT materials and the procedures that will execute during the remainder of the increment.  Seedling Growth studies the effects of microgravity on the growth of plants and is being performed on board the International Space Station (ISS) in collaboration with the European Space Agency. Images of the plants will be captured and down-linked to Earth. Samples of the plants will be harvested and returned to Earth for scientific analysis. The results of this experiment can lead to information that will aid researchers in food production studies concerning future long-duration space missions, as well as data that will enhance crop production on Earth.

Three-Day Look Ahead:
Friday, May 17: Seedling Growth, BASS, PCE Install
Saturday, May 18: Nominal weekend off-duty
Sunday, May 19: Nominal weekend off-duty

During the evening DPC, MCC-H passed they were tracking a Red conjunction with a maneuver decision being made tonight during crew sleep.  A maneuver would occur Tuesday (midnight GMT I think) if necessary.

Gruzomaket is a Russian satellite that was launched by a Strela rocket (a modified SS-19 ICBM) from Baikonur. No further information could be ascertained except that the Russian Interfax news agency calls the payload as a mock-up (and the name can be so translated also).

International Space Station (ISS) Management Center (IMC) Daily Summary Report
Increment 36 Operations – Stage 36-3
05/20/13 4:00 pm Central Daylight Time (CDT)
140/21:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

New Status:
Multi-user Droplet Combustion Apparatus (MDCA) Hardware Replacement:  On May 16, Combustion Integration Rack (CIR) experienced a failed igniter in the combustion chamber. Further test points could not be accomplished until it was replaced.  Today, FE-3 Cassidy reviewed procedures, gathered hardware, accessed the CIR Combustion Chamber and removed the MDCA Chamber Insert Assembly (CIA) from the Chamber.  He then replaced the MDCA Fuel Reservoir in Location 1 and both MDCA igniter tips and re-installed the MDCA CIA in the Chamber.

Treadmill with Vibration Isolation System (TVIS) Removal: CDR Vinogradov and FE-2 Misurkin removed TVIS and temporarily stowed it in the KAYUTA (Russian sleep quarters) in preparation for the new Russian Treadmill (BD-2) installation and checkout over the next 3 days. Crew is waiting until BD-2 is installed and operational before disassembling TVIS.

Removed Photo Voltaic Thermal Control System (PVTCS) PFCS Status: The Pump Flow Control System (PFCS) that was removed during US Extravehicular Activity (EVA) 21 on May 11, 2013, continued to show a steady leak rate after the EVA.  Over the weekend the removed PFCS accumulator quantity fell to 0%. Ground controllers will uplink updated Pre-Positioned Load (PPLs) later today to allow PVTCS automated safing to be re-enabled on Tuesday.  Ground controllers expect to reactivate Channel 2B Electrical Power System (EPS) hardware on Wednesday.

ISS Conjunction Threat: The ground was preparing for a possible ISS Debris Avoidance Maneuver (DAM) in response to a conjunction threat from object Kondor-E 1 Observation Satellite. Last night, the Probability of Collision (PC) was in the red threshold. At this time, the trend has gone to green and ground teams are standing down on previous DAM planning.

Three-Day Look Ahead:
Tuesday, May 21: BD-2 Install, Emergency OBT, CFE Hardware Setup, Fundoscope Exam
Wednesday, May 22: BD-2 Install, CFE ICF9 Test, Lab video encoder test
Thursday, May 23: BD-2 Install, SPHERES

There we go: the residual amount of ammonia in the unit that was removed has bled down to nothing. Couldn't get a better smoking gun at this point!

Not strictly related to Expedition 36, but worth noting: Today marks one year since the launch of SpaceX's Dragon on the C2+ mission. How time flies!

Suffredini mentioned the upcoming Olympic torch relay at the end of the expedition.  While interesting for publicity purposes it raises the question as to why a direct handover of crews is possible for Russian PA purposes but not possible to eliminate the routine 2-3 week periods of 3 person crews which seriously impact the stated purpose of the ISS now--science.

Direct handovers wouldn't even be necessary if the Soyuz' followed the Progress standard of a 2-3 day gap between return and replacement launch. Previously mentioned O2 production, CO2 removal, and Russian docking port availability would not prevent crew rotation much sooner than now standard 2-3 weeks.

141/21:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

New Status:
Fundoscope Activation, Checkout and Eye Exam:  Flight Engineer (FE)-3 Cassidy checked out the new Fundoscope hardware used in the Prospective Observational Study of Ocular Health. Following this activity,  he performed an eye exam using the fundoscope with assistance of a physician on the ground.  Ocular Health’s protocol gathers physiological data to characterize the risk of microgravity induced visual impairment intracranial pressure on crewmembers. The data collected will be shared with crew physicians to more accurately assess changes that occur in the visual, vascular, and central nervous systems upon exposure to microgravity and the resulting fluid shifts.

ISS Emergency Drill:  CDR Vinogradov, FE-2 Misurkin, Cassidy and ground controllers worked together to practice their initial response to a simulated ammonia leak. The teams used recently approved procedures and techniques to respond to the simulated leak.

Russian Treadmill (БД-2) Outfitting:  Vinogradov and Misurkin removed the БД-2 from the Progress and started assembling the unit. The vibration isolation system has been unpacked and assembled.  The crew has begun to assemble the belt unit and will continue with outfitting on Wednesday.

Vane Gap 1 (VG-1) Hardware Setup:  Cassidy configured the Capillary Flow Experiment (CFE)-2 hardware that will be used Wednesday to perform the Vane Gap 1 (VG-1) experiment. The primary objective of the Vane Gap experiment is to determine equilibrium interface configurations and critical wetting conditions for interfaces between interior corners separated by a gap.

Three-Day Look Ahead:
Wednesday, May 22: BD-2 Install, CFE VG1 Test, Lab video encoder test
Thursday, May 23: BD-2 Install, SPHERES
Friday, May 24: Seedling Growth Sample Process,  EXPRESS 3 Laptop Software Load

I suppose the answer is obvious - it's their vehicle so they can do whatever they want as long and NASA+IP astros arrive to the station and come back. I doubt there is anything in contract that would prevent them from shifting times around however they see fit.
Plus it is known (I heard this on some NASA briefing) that direct handover is more expensive for MCC-M (and quite possibly for MCC-H as well) as they have to support more vehicles on orbit at the same time. For this occasion this extra expense may be paid from Olympics' budget, but who will pay this for regular direct handovers?

Besides, this event will surely generate a lot of publicity for ISS as whole, and so NASA and other IPs will benefit from it as well.
