Author Topic: Section Header: New Physics for Space Technology  (Read 19512 times)

Online Chris Bergin

The original advanced concepts forum was for things like Tethers and such. While we've always avoided wacky topics like "I'm a Bulgarian, send me money because I've invented an anti-gravity spaceship ;D" the advanced topic has become dominated by subjects that are a step over things like Tethers.

As such it was recommended we had another section for things like EM Drive.

http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=37683.msg1445299#msg1445299

As such, here is it.

I've moved the EM Drive Threads (wowzers, millions of reads) and will move other things into here as we appears to have a fair amount of threads that would be more suited here. Advanced Concepts can also breathe a little easier without forever seeing threads bumped down by EM Drive, etc.

---

To help fill this section please post links to threads in the Advanced Concepts Section that should be moved into this new section).

Thanks! Move complete for the above threads (two were almost dead/non-starters, so removed them as they were just....dead, but the rest of that wild and wacky stuff has been moved from advanced to future).

Maybe this one because it doesnt presently fit under Nuclear Propulsion:

and this one:

I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping you'd call it the "unobtainium" section.

Alt-fusion is different than New Physics, except for the cold fusion concepts which do require new physics. Alt-fusion is still definitely hot fusion.

Electrostatics is definitely not New Physics, either. No one would win a Nobel Prize for HERTS' propulsion technique.

Definitely both work in the Advanced Concepts section.

Physics whose discussions contain disproportionate numbers of words and phrases including "whoa", "dude", "far out" and "Stop bogarting man".

Define "new physics"?
Pretty obvious. Of course, the more obvious something is, the harder it is to precisely explain it...

If a thing is impossible using currently known laws of physics, then it relies on "new physics." That doesn't necessarily mean it's /actually/ impossible because our understanding of the laws of physics isn't 100% complete (or we physicists hope).

This is different than just being super-optimistic engineering, as a skeptic may consider many of the alt-fusion concepts.

Faster than light travel is not possible because it'd violate causality, and we assume that the laws of physics are causal (if you demonstrated FTL, you'd get a Nobel Prize). Wormholes aren't stable unless a new phase of some sort of exotic matter with negative energy is discovered, which would count as "new physics."
