Available Space 3D “printable” models
« on: 07/08/2012 06:21 pm »
Seen some great space models available for 3D printing.   Thought a thread to document what might be available is warranted.

Wish to help out, join in?  See "Looking for Picture takers to assist 3D model makers"

Just to clarify the models I’ve listed go beyond NASA models. As many people don’t understand thingiverse.

As this example shows   http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:10109

I'm very pleased to list this next 3D printable project.

Started life as a Kickstarter project

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/575960623/ardusat-your-arduino-experiment-in-space?ref=live

Now you can download the parts files and build your own models!
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27274   ArduSat

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27300   ArduSat - The Arduino CubeSat Satellite (full scale model)

This is a full scale (moderately simplified) 3D printer-ready copy of the ArduSat, the wildly successful Kickstarter.com satellite for personal space exploration (received $106,330 funding, 3X their original goal!).

New WIP Mars Curiosity Rover

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27908

This one looks like it will have a great deal more features and detail.

Future Plans:

"I'll update the picture with this latest version as soon as I print all the latest parts. Send me a good one and maybe I'll use it!
I'd like to make a better wheel attachment system that allows the wheels to spin freely and securely.
Working rocker-bogie?
More accurate"

I feel like I should link to this model of mine. I've been debating making it available for sale, but I keep getting visions of cease and desist letters, which is not exactly the kind of notice I'd like to get from SpaceX.

I need to print a new copy of my own, I left mine in a Fridays a month ago. I've been trying to also mock up a trunk to go with it, preferably one that if separate so they can be displayed together or independently.

Thats beautiful design work.  If you did it yourself in a CAD pkg or Art SW its yours as "ART"

If you wish to protect your work you can sign it so to speak.   Put your name or handle or something inside say the heat shield or something.

If you want to make a few dollars off each design look into this firm and see you can buy and sell this way.  http://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/sell-eps

If you have any more feel free to post or email me if you wish.

I can sell through Shapeways too--I push a button in the backend to make it available for public sale, set a premium I want to make on the model, and a little "add to cart" thing shows up in the linked page. For there, people send Shapeways money, Shapeways send the printed piece to them and the premium to me.

I may update the model a little (add some linkpin holes for a future trunk model, thin the walls a bit more to reduce volume and cost), then do just that. Would anybody be interested in buying one if I did that?

Great thread. I hope to attend the Maker Faire here in NY that is coming up. If I see anything good 3D space models I'll take pics to post (and maybe links to the designs)

I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man or machine on a body such as the Moon and harvest a cup of water for a human to drink or process into fuel for their craft.

Have a bunch of updates available

One is a tribute for Neil Armstrong done by 3D printers.

Had some mixed feelings posting this in the Neil Armstrong thread, and some time has passed so this is the proper place IMHO.

this project also popped up today & would also put it under Educational fun, teaching aid?

Wind tunnel project for 3D printing
http://rapman-education.posterous.com/wind-tunnel-project-for-3d-printing

"A new Teaching and Learning resource for 3D printing on the BfB wiki...

Design and make a Wind Tunnel... This resource suggests ways to make a small wind tunnel using 3D printed parts and a few other odds and ends to test the aerodynamic forces on different models. Different models can be 3D printed and tested to compare their efficiency. This project will be suitable for Design and Technology, Science and maybe Mathematics."

Most of the “open”world uses variations of the Prusa Mendel.     http://reprap.org/wiki/Prusa

Some users really enjoy a version of the Mendel Max.

http://www.makergear.com/products/m-series-3d-printers    Gives excellent service & backing of products.

For myself this latest Kickstarter is bugging me to buy @ a very low less than $500 price point.  Only issue atm is if they will get enough funding to make the goal.

More detail to the capsule has been added, next I'm probably going to add some of the basic mold lines and the outline for the GNC door and side hatch. That will most likely be as far as I'm going to go with this model.

EDIT Update: I've since added what I said above but I kept on having issues with AutoCAD not wanting to draw certain shapes and as a result things didn't turn out as nice as I would have liked them to have.

Update on this: As I expected the goal was not near where they expected.  At a $500 price point for an injection moulded 3D printer it was a great price.  Even at their goal of $50,000 it was not enough funding to cover making the injection moulds.  They really wished to get alot more funding.

Worth watching if they can regroup.

I should point for readers of this thread, that printed images are posted like everyday on Thingiverse.   So if your interested in that model take a look see at what others are doing with it.   Lots of surprises.

Textured Earth
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17336

This is a model of Earth made of a sphere with two displacement maps. A specular map displaces the land & ice masses above the oceans. A topography map adds texture to the land. This exaggerates the texture more than a topography map alone.

Hello all,

I've been looking and looking at the beautiful 3D models NASA has posted.  Has anybody actually managed to get any of them printed?  We might be getting a 3D printer at work, and I'd love to see the results, or hear any lessons you might be able to share.

Thanks,
Jeff

Some of the 3D models come out of NASA, are reworked and given out on Thingiverse.  Take a look at the list above and see.

Now for some of the experimental 3D designs.

Right now multi-color is one of the projects many are working on.   It’s very early, but you can see the direction.

Two Color World  (Earth)
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:11660

Giant Hollow Two Color World
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:15658
145mm tall. The inside is hollow to save plastic because it's so massive. There's two versions, one totally hollow and one with a support column through the center which it turns out isn't really necessary.

Sadly they printed off an earlier version of the model that I wasn't too happy with.

Sorry to hear that.....I have a good idea for you if you wish to get the "good" copies out there.

Put another copy from your 1st file on thingiverse, its called Derivative.

Put the title something like Fine detail Dragon.

If you have extra time it also might be a good idea to break apart that one big file into small Stl files.

1) Dragon stl
1) Solar panel stl etc.

It makes for much easier printing...

Under the thinking of much easier printing I found myself with extra time this holiday to print up a dragon.   Only problem was that I only had was I needed to cut into parts.

When cutting the SW used its Intelligence saw the hole (distance) between the Dragon & trunk and Meshed them.

After a sec of disappointment I found the design very interesting.  The contrast showed how much time and effort went into this design by Manboy.  Tons of details.  So I had another experiment.....I kept the file and printed it.  Its only in the early AM will post it later.

I found that I really like the design!

This pic is just for you ManBoy....

Normally a printer experiment of mine would not be shown in public.   This one was to do super fine, light weight internals (only air inside).   As you can see some decent detail in the print, you can see the details of problems printing as well.  Enjoy this one is for you!

You did a fine job on the model and posts on thingiverse.  Enough there to provide many hours of printing joy

Live 3D Printing demo

We have a new printer that we are in the process of calibration;   we had our first day with the new printer operating on Thurs. Jan. 17th.

Current plans have a window of late this afternoon (Friday Jan. 18th. thru Sat. pacific US time)    Next in the planned calibration process is to print a “model”.   We have chosen Manboys SpaceX capsule to be printed.

Also expect video problems as this will be my first time broadcasting to Ustream @ http://www.ustream.tv/channel/threed-printing

next the stl file has to be sliced into layers so the plastic can lay detail and build up one layer at a time.

Yesterday we worked on the video cam, not much room inside the SD2.  The Solidoodle 2 is an uber cheap $500 printer.  We purchased a few of them for quick models.

update: having problems with video output

main issue is to get this item printed and tested.   System does record output so i can record and fix the broadcast or upload issue later.

After some testing the cooling system of the printer was not working right and was shut down.  Three of the fan blades look to be broken, work goes on to fix the issue.

Nice thing about 3D printers, sometimes others have the same problems and design fixes.  This is the case with the fan blade broken.  Its replacement will be printed today.

Update:

New fan printed ( see pics)
While I was working on it, found a much stronger upgrade for the extruder, http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:40711/   The parts were printed, and atm are in the process of being installed and adjusted. (pic )

Video system fixed and tested this morning.

Should have everything ready for a Live broadcast when time permits.

Check back for updates....

We just had two software upgrades to incorporate into all our printers.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to test the new software and features on one printer we used for making "parts"

I sliced and tested part of the Dragon Print.
More to follow....

Edit: we had a live feed to a google hangout today and had much success with the model until the last 45 min.  Some pics shortly......we plan on redoing the print again in the near future.

Most 3d printers use PLA or ABS plastic.  Prices for a roll of material run in the $ 3x.xx dollar range.

Price of materials can be in the cents maybe 40cents or so.  Keep in mind designs are controlled for thickness, size etc. So many variables to the question.

Hi Prober,

I've seen all the outstanding 3D printed Shuttle models and know now that's possible printing such a model of an entire Shuttle stack (Orbiter & ET & SRBs) also in 1:160.

Please could you tell me how it would be as expensive?

very hard to answer, many variables.

Material costs very low, but times becomes the major factor. What is the person who is printing's time worth?   It comes down to hours of printing depending on the quality wished for as you can alter the height of material, thickness inside etc.

You might wish to submit the print your interested in to one of the service bureaus and get a rough idea of price.  Many times this works for some projects.   Some projects its better to buy your own printer as they are low cost and quality is getting much better each day.

Remix of Moriza's awesome Opportunity Mars Rover
Original Model :http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:59509

Remix http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:83863
Main Changes:
  • Replacement Solar Panel Frames:
These solar panel frame models replace the original models and bring them in line with the sizes of the solar panels included in the original download.
     Opportunity_solarback -> Opportunity_solarback_MCEDIT
     Opportunity_solarmain -> Opportunity_solarmain_left_MCEDIT & Opportunity_solarmain_right_MCEDIT
  • Extended Rear Solar Panel Support:
The Rear Brace Extension piece extends the rear solar panel supports, to take into account the enlarged solar panels.
  • Replacement Wheel Set:
The new wheel pack provides a thicker connection between the wheel body and hub, socketed hub design, and a profile of the spiral flexure pattern used on the Mars Exploration Rovers.

Looks like someone did some work on the Atlantis model.  When it says "repaired" it can mean easier to print without issues making a higher quality print.   The other possibility is more details added or errors fixed.

Ok I might be pushing things a bit with this post.   Just had to post this to show the possible detail available using a 3D printer.  It just keeps getting better and better.  Thunderbirds are go!

    Thunderbird 3  http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:123231

A reusable, vertically launched SSTO (Single Stage To Orbit) spaceship used for space rescue and maintenance of Thunderbird 5. Thunderbird 3 is 87 m (287 feet) long, with a 7 m wide body and a 24 m span (including engines). Thunderbird 3 is unique among the Thunderbird craft in having its dimensions quoted in an episode of the series: in "Give or Take a Million" Jeff Tracy states that the spacecraft stands 287 feet (87m) high.

I recently discovered Shapeways and found a 1/144 scale Dragon that I bought.  I also ordered a set of parts to make a Falcon 9.  But, I see your models are just the files to use on a printer, something I do not have, nor am likely to in the future.  Do you know if your files could be sent to Shapeways for printing?

Attached are a couple of pictures and one with a temp trunk I slapped together.

Shapeways uses standard stl models (like everyone).   You only need to check their printer specs for sizes etc.

The biggest change I made to Manboy's model of the Dragon was to hollow it out. I've seen more models on Thingiverse that are solid. Sending those to Shapeways would result in an expensive model because they charge based on the volume of printing material used. They won't replace solid structures with support webbing.

General steps to take before sending a model to Shapeways:
    - hollow out
    - check if the wall thicknesses conform to Shapeways' specs
    - resize to the scale you want to use
    - check if the model is valid (use e.g. Netfabb)

sorry thought I posted an answer.   No information was posted on the size the bad news.    The good news is that once you have a decent digital file and you have the skills you can size it for whatever size you may wish. ;)

There are some issues with that model.
    - the center engine is larger than the rest, they should all be the same size.
    - fittings are v1.0 rather than 1.1

Yes, noticed that.   Either the person didn't do their proper research or its "artistic expression".    For me, if I wish to print that model the fix is easy....just print an extra smaller engine for the center.

MER Mars rover rocker-bogie suspensions (the most difficult part to build in a rover model):
    http://www.sculpteo.com/en/design/mer-bogie-suspension-1/qGTjPrVv?basket=1&noclickredirect=1

    Pancam and antennas:
    http://www.sculpteo.com/en/design/pancam-1/36RVyoNo?basket=1&noclickredirect=1

The remaining parts are just the body and the panels, which would cost a lot to print, but can easily be done in cardboard, so there isn't actually need to 3d-print them.

I'm now working to tune the robotic arm to make it printable.

The rocker-bogie has the minimum possible printable size: with this size, the "arms" are around 1 mm thick. I don't know the scale w.r.t. real size of the rover.

Antennas (high and low gain) are join together to prevent low-gain from being lost due to its small size, they must be detached before mounting.

Wheels can not rotate in this version.

A number of 1/32 scale LM parts have been made available through Shapeways (just search for 'lunar module').  These include the bottom of the descent stage, descent engine bell, parts of the landing gear, and a few other small pieces.  Some are developed by Vincent Meens, who has legendary skills (his 1/24 scratch-built LM looks real).  Not all parts are made by him, so there may be fit issues, but if you have the urge to do a 1/32 LM, these might be for you.  (Note: there are also  parts from the 'contractor model,' different from the final version; read the descriptions carefully before buying!)

UPDATE to my post in the 3D printing space related under the Advanced.

Yes I'm very excited by this game changing technology.   Printing 3D prints in full color.  The machine looks very much like a ink jet printer.

I just received the 1/72 and 1/48 astronauts in shuttle EMUs available from Max Grueter on Shapeways.  The astros are exquisite.  There are two poses, one with feet apart for free-floating, and one with feet together as in a foot restraint.  The figures have SAFER units on the backpacks, with headlights of course.

ps- if I am able to successfully convert the .3ds HST model from NASA into a printable form, I've got the 1/48 scale Diorama of Doom coming up!

NASA Just Released an Entire Library of 3D Printable Models

    http://tinyurl.com/n75z8wd

"All the files are in STL format and NASA is offering them as free downloads. Several of the objects have been divided in half to allow them to print without the need for support structures, and each model is no longer than 4 inches in any direction so they will easily fit within the build space of most home/desktop 3D printers. "

"This is most likely only the beginning of NASA releasing 3D printable files, as they have a huge library of 3D models just waiting for conversion. "

    They are not ready-to-print:

This .stl file was produced by scaling the original model and converting it directly to .stl format; it may not yet be ideal for printing. We welcome your feedback on your experience.

There's a lot of work to do to make them printable.

I have completed all parts for a 1/32 or 1/24 lunar module descent stage. You can find details on my instruction pages at http://spacemodels.nuxit.net/1-32%20LM/index.htm and parts in my shapeways shop (http://www.shapeways.com/shops/spacemodels?section=1%2F32+Lunar+Module&s=0. Below is a picture of my 1/32 descent stage besides an old 1/48 Revell descent stage.

    Hi Prober,

This model is no longer available or the link quit working.  I tried searching for it but had no luck.   Do you have it?
    Thanks Dave

Thanks for starting this thread!  My new Printrbot Simple Metal printer arrived just after Christmas, but I finally had time to put it together and start playing.   I'm working on a copy of @manboy's Dragon v1, very cool, and I'm also printing out the Buran that was linked earlier for my 2-yr old to play with (he is obsessed with rockets, wonder where that comes from?).  I like the exploded version of the Dragon, I'm expecting that my son will enjoy taking apart the trunk, capsule and solar panels.

He's just discovered how staging works ("good bye fuel tank!") so I expect at some point I'm going to tweak some of the excellent SpaceX-related models to have separate stages that snap or slide together somehow, like the slide mechanism in the Buran.

Anyone else have any favorite aerospace-related toys they've printed?

I've designed and printed a flying "pad abort" dragon 2.  Going to launch it this weekend, I'll post the files assuming it flies well.

(Oh, and I made a "toy" variant with extra-thick nonbreakable fins and Velcro to hold the trunk to the capsule for my toddler to play with.)

I've had good experience with Shapeways. Haven't tried other services: the only ones I found were at least 30% more expensive, and quality from Shapeways was good enough that I didn't bother switching.

At Shapeways, SLS nylon is known as "Strong & Flexible plastic"

Someone who I believe is on this forum just released a 3D printed Falcon 9 1.1. This model can be split into the falcons two stages, as the pictures show. (Pictures from the Thingiverse listing).

Hi guys, me and my colleague are working on 3d printable model which as close as possible to actual Falcon 9 1.2

We would like to print some models in both launch and landing configuration, are you aware of any blueprints with some size information so we can get it right?

    Thank you

There's another Falcon 9 on thingiverse, a bit one:

The dimensions seem to be off, though -- much too short and stubby.

Here are the Falcon rockets I've made.  Not all 3d printed, though: most use traditional cardboard tube construction for the main body.

The four items in the front left are toys for my son (two dragons, a stubby F9 where the stages attach with Velcro, and an ASDS).  The rest are flying models.

The back left has a cutout for mounting a keychain video camera.  That nose section and tail fin section are 3d-printed.

I got my very own 3D printer last Friday, a Monoprice Select Mini, with (120mm)^3 printable volume.  The second model I put through it was a Crew Dragon I found on Thingiverse (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1802512), and it worked beautifully!  The picture was taken before any clean up.

The model was made using PLA filament and was printed at 1/72 scale.  I have another copy printing right now.  A little primer and a bit of sanding, and she'll be ready to paint and will join my 1/72 "new space" collection.

I also included a shot of the printer itself.  Overall, it's been a good experience.  This is really a starter printer, given the price and relatively small build volume, but I'm a starter, so, yeah.  The software they shipped with it is an old version of Cura for Windows, and I used it to slice the Crew Dragon; I tried the newest version (2.4) with another model, but had all kinds of settings problems, and ended up spending a couple of hours today chipping blobs of fused PLA from all around the printer nozzle.  The old version of Cura does work, so I'll just use that for a while.  I paid $199 (with free Prime shipping) on Amazon.  All in all, I'm very happy; the problems were my fault, not Monoprice's.  I bought (and used) some cleaning filament today, and have ordered a new build surface and some extra nozzles.

I've built resin and styrene kits, plus lots of scratch builds, and have even molded and cast a model of my own.  It's going to be a treat to join the 3D printing revolution.  When I have time, I'll try to find a 3D modeling program so I can do complex shapes (and trusses, I hate trusses).  I'm looking forward to making models where parts are 3D printed, parts are done by hand.

This thread's getting pretty dusty, so here's something new.  I've got a small astronomy class this year, and one of the assignments was for the students to pick a space probe from a list and write a short paper or do a presentation about it.  As a prize, I printed out a model of the spacecraft (when I could find one and get it to print), the object visited, or the mission logo.  These are: New Horizons, Cassini, and Curiosity; comets Halley, Wild 2, and Churyumov-Gerasiminko; and logos for Galileo, Messenger, and the recovered "Earthrise" picture from Lunar Orbiter.

The process makes me wish I had a better printer, but a cheap, cranky 3D printer is better than none at all!

I made the logos by "posterizing" images in Photoshop, then using an add-on in Simplify3D to convert the image into a sort of bas-relief.
