NASA TV to Air US Spacewalk, Briefing

On Sept. 1, two NASA astronauts will spacewalk outside the International Space Station for the second time in less than two weeks.

NASA Television will provide complete coverage beginning at 6:30 a.m. EDT, with the six-and-a-half hour spacewalk scheduled to begin about 8 a.m.

Working on the port side of the orbiting complex’s backbone, or truss, Expedition 48 Commander Jeff Williams and Flight Engineer Kate Rubins of NASA will retract a thermal radiator that is part of the station’s cooling system. The radiator is a backup that had been deployed previously as part of an effort to fix an ammonia coolant leak. They’ll also tighten struts on a solar array joint, and install the first of several enhanced high-definition television cameras that will be used to monitor activities outside the station, including the comings and goings of visiting cargo and crew vehicles.

NASA TV will air a briefing to preview the spacewalk activities at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. The briefing participants are:
•Zeb Scoville, spacewalk flight director
•John Mularski, lead spacewalk officer

Reporters may attend the briefing at Johnson or ask questions by calling the Johnson newsroom at 281-483-5111 no later than 1:45 p.m. Aug. 24.

This will be the 195th spacewalk in support of space station assembly and maintenance, the fifth of Williams’ career and the second for Rubins. As was the case for their first spacewalk together Aug. 19, Williams will be designated as extravehicular crew member 1 (EV1), wearing a spacesuit with a red stripe, while Rubins will be EV2, wearing a suit with no stripes.

NASA Previews Next U.S. Spacewalk

NASA

Published on Aug 24, 2016
NASA hosted a news briefing on August 24 at the agency’s Johnson Space Center to preview the next U.S. Spacewalk scheduled to take place outside the International Space Station. On September 1, NASA astronauts Kate Rubins and Jeff Williams will work on the port side of the station’s truss system to retract a thermal radiator that is part of the station’s cooling system, tighten struts on a solar array joint, and install the first of several enhanced high-definition television cameras to monitor activities outside the station. It will be their second spacewalk in less than two weeks – on August 19, Williams and Rubins installed the first of the station’s two international docking adapters (IDAs) during a five-hour and 58-minute spacewalk.

The SSRMS is attempting the RPCM replacement mentioned during the EVA-37 press conference as being necessary to power the HD camera being installed during the EVA.

2 RPCMs are now in view.  Not sure if this the operational or storage location of the spare.

An RPCM has been removed.  Presumably this is the failed unit.

The view has changed to a long range one of the RPCM on DEXTRE on the end of the SSRMS

CAPCOM just confirmed to the crew that the failed RPCM has been removed and is being stowed.  The ongoing SSRMS operations are lengthening crew exercise constraints.

CAPCOM confirmed the failed RPCM is bolted into the storage location. Operations are standing down during the crew day and installation of the spare will be attempted tonight.

I wonder if they dropped the in studio interviews like in the last EVA  and split up the coverage between NASA TV channels 1 & 2? Since they didn't say nothing in the press release?  I hope so

I also wonder if they skip the briefing material (overview pics per EVA element) like last time.
NASA's ISS coverage has even gone further downhill vis-a-vis last year. On NASA's Flickr page, they posted only two EVA pics. Luckily, we got some extra pics thru Roscosmos.
