This launch is now schedule for May 2015.

I wonder how they squeeze this one into May with Express-AM8 slipping into mid-May and there's an ILS launch late that month too... :P

EDIT: Looks like Express-AM8 may be slipping into June which explains the date: http://ria.ru/science/20150402/1056104608.html

Presume this will slip again with Mexsat-1 now penciled in for the 15th. Perhaps Inmarsat-5 F3 will end up launching before this one to keep ILS on schedule.

Is this launch the last of the "phase 1" Proton-M/Briz-M?  It looks like it from the Proton-K and -M/Briz-M page on Gunter's Space Page.

Both Phase I and Phase III have remained in use in parallel, and soon to be introduced is a Phase IV but evidence suggests at least another twenty Phase III. Proton with serial number 53536 was damaged during transportation to Baikonur, probably features RD-275 engines, and is now outside of warranty period. From what Anik has uncovered the long serial number of this rocket is 4924837975; the only 97x serial number batch production date 2013, just one?

Are there any further Garpun launches expected in future?  (This is the second Garpun launch.)

Would not a three-satellite GEO constellation provide global coverage, especially to communicate with assets in LEO?

Garpun is a replacement for the retired satellites in the Potok series.   Although three locations were registered for Potok, only two were ever used; 80 deg E and 346.5 deg E.   I would not be surprised if the same applied to the Garpun series - however many satellites are actually launched.   Do we know how many satellites are being ordered?

Garpun-1 (Kosmos-2473) is at 80°E; so if Phillip is right we could expect Garpun-2 to go to 13.5°W ;)

Or #2 goes to 80 deg E and then #1 relocated to 346.5 deg E.   (I never think in terms of deg W!)   This is what happened on some of the earlier missions: 80 deg E seems to be the "prime location".

So, perhaps the Garpun system is a Russian analog in coverage to the original, operational TDRS system?

(TDRS East and TDRS West, with a Zone of Exclusion on the far side of the Earth from the continental USA) analog to
("Garpun East" and "Garpun West," with a ZOE on the far side of the Earth from Russia)

EDIT: Thank you to Phillip, for the Potok information, and to input.

Three Potok locations were registered with the ITU:

Potok-1      346.5 deg E

Potok-2        80.0 deg E

Potok-3      192.0 deg E

Potok-3 was never actually used.

Any hope of a webcast?

Usually such military launches don't have one (like the one that launched the last Garpun - and it was a Proton RTF (TM)!), and TsENKI don't have this one listed on the website.

Won't hurt to try right before launch though...

From the Facebook of Pavel Vinogradov, who is in Baykonur for the launch of Soyuz TMA-19M :

В 07.00 корабль Союз ТМА-19М с РН Союз ФГ двинулся на старт. Работаем не покладая рук... То ли ещё будет!

ILS pass on a presser (not by them, but because it's the rocket they use):

Khrunichev Press Release

KHRUNICHEV SPACE CENTER: PROTON SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHES A RUSSIAN MILITARY SATELLITE

The Proton launch vehicle that lifted off from Pad 81 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Sunday, 13 December, 03:17 Moscow time (GMT+3) successfully placed a Russian military spacecraft into orbit. This marks the seventh Proton launch of the year.

The lift-off and flight of the Proton M launch vehicle were nominal. The Orbital Unit (the spacecraft and the Breeze M upper stage) separated from the third stage of the rocket at its expected time and continued its autonomous flight. Further injection of the spacecraft into the target orbit was performed using ignitions of the upper stage main engine.

The spacecraft separated from the Breeze M upper stage at the expected time and was taken under control by the Titov Main Test Space Center of the Russian Air and Space Forces.

The heavy-lift Proton launch vehicle and the Breeze M upper stage are developed and serially manufactured by the Khrunichev Space Production and Research Center. The heavy-lift Proton launch vehicle is used to launch payloads into Earth orbits and escape trajectories as part of Federal and commercial missions. It is notable for its high performance and operational characteristics. An enhanced Proton M equipped with the Breeze M upper stage is capable of lifting payloads of >6MT to GTO.

Or #2 goes to 80 deg E and then #1 relocated to 346.5 deg E.   (I never think in terms of deg W!)   This is what happened on some of the earlier missions: 80 deg E seems to be the "prime location".
Seems to be the case: #2 is at 80°E

I'd like to get more input into this?
Briz-M Breakup or Explode?
Is the Briz-M grounded now for the investigation?
