April 5 – Anik G1 – Proton-M/Briz-M – Baikonur 200/39 – 19:01:00 UTC

Briz-M upper stage for this mission was yesterday delivered to Baikonur

http://www.khrunichev.ru/main.php?id=1&nid=2730 (on Russian)

Anik G1 is a canadian communications satellite operated by Telesat Canada, carrying 16 transponders operating in the extended Ku-band that will be used by Shaw Direct, a provider of direct-to-home satellite TV services in Canada. Anik G1 will also provide expansion and follow-on capacity at 107.3 degrees West co-located with the Anik F1R satellite covering South America.

It also has 12 Ku-band and 24 C-band transponders that will both replace and expand on Telesat’s Anik F1 satellite now serving South America. In addition, Anik G1 will have three X-band channels for government services over the Americas and part of the Pacific Ocean, and one channel in the reverse Direct Broadcast Service band. To be built by Space Systems/Loral utilizing the flight-proven LS-1300 platform, Anik G1 is anticipated to have a service lifetime of 15 years.

М.В. Space Systems/Loral, RUAG, ILS.

Unfortunately the two aren't related. The satellite's name comes from Inuktitut, meaning "little brother". The name has been in use since 1972 with Anik A1. Our anik's forum name is a short form of his own name, which is left to the reader as an exercise.  ;)

Our Shuttle lover Chris will also like to know that 4 of the old Anik series rode on the Shuttle: Anik C3 on STS-5, Anik C2 on STS-7, Anik D2 on STS-51-A and Anik C1 on STS-51-D.  :)

What threat--perceived or real--requires an armored personnel carrier escort at Baikonour? ???

Best quote heard during an inspection, "I was unaware that I was the only one who was aware."

What threat--perceived or real--requires an armored personnel carrier escort at Baikonour? ???

1. It's a rocket!
2. Baikonur still holds some ICBMs at various points around the cosmodrome (even holds some R-36 SATAN launches over the past few years)
3. Who knows what kind of facilities those terrioists are targetting? I know that armored personnel carrier escort are common at the Cape and VAFB, and Kourou CSG has a few hundred French special forces stationed there....

I think it's a 'groundhog', actually.   And anyone who has seen the 1980's movie "CaddyShack" knows what kind of trouble they can be!   :-)
