December is going to be a busy month... looking for two back to back success stories here.

Here's hoping that it's way more than two-

I believe that there is:

+  A Delta II out of VAFB ~ 07 December
+  STS-117 on ~07 December from KSC
+  A Minotaur on ~11 December from Wallops Island
+  A Proton on ~12 December from Baikonur
+  An H-2A mid December from Tanegashima
+  A Falcon 1 sometime in December
+  A Sea Launch sometime in December
+  A Proton/Glonass in late December

and  (since I'm rooting for one that I've helped a tiny bit on)
+  An Atlas 5 out of KSC, which just slipped to Jan, carrying amongst other things, NextSat [OE]

What? and What?!?

What have you heard that makes you think it unlikely that SpaceX will launch in December?  Are you just judging by the lack of news?  (For an organization that used to post continously, a full two months of silence, when they discussed a launch in three, is astounding.  OTOH they were pretty closed mouth until just before the launch of the Falcon 1 Mk 1.)

Atlas 5 certainly does launch from KSC.  I was there and saw with my own two eyes the January 19th launch of New Horizons on an Atlas V 551.  Nice view across the water.
What kind of wastrels would dump a perfectly good booster in the ocean after just one use?

Jim's either being more than a little bit pedantic, or flat out rude, but I'll take it in stride as technically he's correct.

Atlas  V launches from SLC-41, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.  KSC is a slip of the pinky on my part.
ALthough, it is quite possible to watch the launch from KSC proper.  With a touch of luck and blessings from the schedule gods,  I'm hoping to be there to see OE go myself...

This particular launch is STP1.  It will deliver OE (ASTRO/NextSat), and some small spacecraft will be deployed from the ESPA ring.  If I remember correctly,  MidSTAR 1, FalconSat 3, STPSat 1 and CFESat.  It's a 401 vehicle ,with a single-engine Centaur upper stage.  Thats all from memory, so I'd welcome corrections if I'm wrong.  Even pedantic corrections. :)

With respect to SpaceX, I wouldn't bet that they fly in December, more likely they have more maturing to do with the vehicle prep and launch ops.  I'm still hoping that they get it together on this try, but I'm not going to be the farm on it.

My SWAG is that it will be three launch attempts before the next Falcon I leaves terra firma.  Anyone else want into the pool?

My guess for spacex is January... Again a SWAG.  If it happens in December I will be pleasantly surprised for several reasons.

The first being that SpaceX will have learned how to schedule in time in their schedule to handle the unexpected.

Hopefully the first thing SpaceX will have learned is to not force their customer to spend ANOTHER holiday season on Kwaj...

Considering the number of tries it took them to get through their previous countdown procedure, with 10-20x the number of diagnostic checks I strongly suspect it'll take them a few tries again to get all the numbers to line up properly for launch - and hopefully this time they won't overlook another important one.

I hope they make it this time.

You're not married, are you?  Try explaining to the spouse why you won't be at the inlaws' for ANOTHER holiday season.  ;-o

Besides, does this look like a tropical paradise to you?

Aaah, to be able to have nothing to do on a beach waiting for a LOX shipment while ignoring the in-laws, and aero yes I am married...

It is kinda crazy to shuttle all the VIP's out there and back each attempt, and I would like to see it work but have that bitter dot com implosion build and they will come lack of a solid business model after taste in my mouth.

I think every geek out there wants to build his own moon rocket, and I know I am jealous that Elon actually gets to try...

The Space Calendar ( http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/calendar/calendar.html )is given January 12th as the launch date for the next Falcon-1. Is there any confirmation for this?

Did SpaceX ever release video of the last launch, shot from the ground?  Or pictures of it crashing?  Or is the onboard cam all we have?

Yes, at www.spacex.com, click the red "launch info" button.  there is the onboard camera feed from liftoff to splashdown, also a close-range ground camera feed, and a long-range video.  However, the ground-based vids only show the takeoff, not the crash.  They're still pretty cool!

"Splashdown" is a bit of a misnomer. From first hand accounts I've heard, the vehicle went up in a fireball PRIOR to impact.  That is the likely reason we haven't seen any video all the way through.  One of the "bullet point" SpaceX has repeated ad nauseum is that their thrust termination by shutting off a valve is better than an explosive-based thrust termination.  If it in blew up in mid-air, that 'talking point' is also detonated.

Btw you can see from the onboard camera that the rocket breaks up before hitting the water, the lower part is missing from the view.

More reason why it was a very good thing they did not get to launch first from Vandenberg.  That thing would have made a real mess there if it had.  Probaly would've landed on top of the Atlas or Titan Pads.
