Launch is set for late 2017/early 2018. It will carry the GSAT-6A satellite which is a follow on to the GSAT-6 launched on D6 mission back in august 2015.

This would be the first GSLV MK-2 to feature the uprated C-15 upper stage. Launch is set for January.

The payload capacity should go up from 2.25 tons to >2.5 tons to GTO from this mission onwards

ISRO is to launch GSAT-6A right after the Cartosat Mission is launched by PSLV C40, though the exact month is not known, most probably it is presumed to be launched in February.

Source : Isro will resume sat launches only from first week of 2018

Quote
Sivan said, "After the Cartosat mission, the subsequent launch will be of Gsat-6A that will be lifted off by a GSLV Mk II rocket".

Another delay

Quote
The ISRO would launch the GSLV GSAT 6A in the last week of March. The ISRO had lined up a number of programmes to make India stronger in various aspects of development and services to the people. To a question, Mr. Sivan said the ISRO was working on improving the longevity of satellites.

I wonder if all these delays have something to do with the new stretched upper stage (C-15)?

Launch is set for 24th March. GS1 (1st stage) and GS2 (2nd stage) integration have been completed. Cryogenic upper stage has been shipped to launch site and GSAT-6A is fully assembled undergoing final stages of testing.

Article (Telugu): http://andhrabhoomi.net/content/nation-6342

In the last four successive successful launches, GSLV MK-II payload capability has increased by minuscule proportion.

Launch Mission  :   GSLV MK-II F06
Launch Date     :   5 January 2014
Satellite    :   GSAT-14
Payload      :   1980 KG
Launch Status   :   Success

Launch Mission  :   GSLV MK-II D6
Launch Date     :   27 August 2015
Satellite    :   GSAT-6
Payload      :   2117 KG
Launch Status   :   Success

Launch Mission  :   GSLV MK-II F05
Launch Date     :   8 September 2016
Satellite    :   INSAT-3DR
Payload      :   2211 KG
Launch Status   :   Success

Launch Mission  :   GSLV MK-II F09
Launch Date     :   5 May 2017
Satellite    :   GSAT-9 / South Asia Satellite
Payload      :   2230
Launch Status   :   Success

Can we expect a quantum leap in the payload of this launch ? I have been hearing that uprated Cryogenic Engine will power the Upper stage as well as there have been reports of the Vikas 2 Engine having been uprated as well. When is GSLV MK-II supposed to reach its publicized payload capability of 2.5 ton ? In the last seventeen years, GSLV has gone through tortuous stages of development and launch failures when all over the world the space fairing nations continued to raise the payload of communication satellite launch vehicle by at least five to six times the capability of GSLV MK-II, making it losing the race.

Liftoff mass of GSAT-6A is only 2140 kg so the payload for this launch will actually be lighter than the last two GSLV launches.

As for uprated cryo stage several news reports have hinted at it flying for the first time on this launch however we wont know for sure until isro publishes the official mission brochure. If it does fly on this mission then yes this will be the first gslv with payload capablity of 2.5 ton to GTO. ISRO has recently said that the end goal for gslv is to get GTO payload capablity up to 3.25 ton. The high thrust vikas engines first tested in 2016 will not doubt help towards this along with general dry mass reduction and improvements.

ISRO being able to lift more than 2000kg is itself a huge advance. India was totally dependent on ARIANE for any satellite more than 1900kg until 2014. Now it can definitely lift 2230kg, and will probably increase this to 2.5 soon. Let's hail that, rather than moaning about x-country sending much heavier payloads into space.  ISRO will get there when it gets there.

Oh, on the specific topic :-), it looks like GSAT-6A will go up anytime between March 24 and March 31.
