SpaceX Opens Media Accreditation for OTV-5 Mission

HAWTHORNE, Calif. – Aug. 14, 2017. Media accreditation is now open for SpaceX's Orbital Test Vehicle Mission 5 (OTV-5) from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch is targeted for no earlier than September

Members of the media who are U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents (green card holders) and are interested in covering the launch must fill out this media accreditation form by 5:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, August 16.

Requesting accreditation is not required of media who hold current annual press credentials issued by Kennedy Space Center, but it is appreciated for planning purposes.

For launches from LC-39A, Kennedy Space Center security decides which media are credentialed to cover launches, not SpaceX. Please keep in mind, simply making the request in a timely fashion does not guarantee the request will be granted. Please be sure to provide all the information included on the SpaceX form.

More details on pre-launch media activities will be made available closer to launch.

Looking at between 3-4 pm Eastern based on L2 status of the countdown. Long window, the fire up when ready, so if that changes I'll pass it on.

Air Force preparing to launch fifth Orbital Test Vehicle mission
By Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs / Published August 31, 2017

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- The Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office is undergoing final launch preparations for the fifth mission of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle. The OTV is scheduled to launch on Sept. 7, 2017, onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

The fifth OTV mission continues to advance the X-37B’s performance and flexibility as a space technology demonstrator and host platform for experimental payloads. This mission carries small satellite ride shares and will demonstrate greater opportunities for rapid space access and on-orbit testing of emerging space technologies. Building upon the fourth mission and previous collaboration with experiment partners, this mission will host the Air Force Research Laboratory Advanced Structurally Embedded Thermal Spreader payload to test experimental electronics and oscillating heat pipe technologies in the long duration space environment.

This will be the program’s first launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. The fifth OTV mission will also be launched into, and landed from, a higher inclination orbit than prior missions to further expand the X-37B’s orbital envelope.

“The many firsts on this mission make the upcoming OTV launch a milestone for the program,” said Randy Walden, the director of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office. “It is our goal to continue advancing the X-37B OTV so it can more fully support the growing space community.”

The X-37B program completed its fourth mission on May 7, 2017, landing after 718 days in orbit and extending the total number of days spent in orbit to 2,085.

No clue if MM shot the video themselves or they illegally ripped content another organization/agency.

PATRICK AFB, CCAFS, JDMTA IN HURRICANE CONDITION V

The 45th Space Wing has entered Hurricane Condition V (HURCON V) and is currently taking actions to secure property in the event #HurricaneIrma nears Space Coast facilities. HURCON V normally indicates surface winds in excess of 58 mph (50 knots) could arrive within 96 hours; however, so that we can begin prepatory actions while still supporting a launch operation on Thursday we have declared HURCON 5 early.

Due for rollout shortly (or may already be happening). This mission is going to be tough on updates, given the nature of the mission and because my KSC friends have bigger things to worry about (Hurricane track). So if you personally observe items of interest, via being in the area, etc. Please do post.

Edit: No rollout yet.

Team Patrick, Cape & JDMTA

I wanted to take a minute to update everyone on the steps we are taking to prepare for Hurricane Irma. Late yesterday I initiated HURCON 5 for our installations. earlier than required according to the "book answer" but I wanted stay ahead of this storm. This morning I also stood up our Crisis Action Team, bringing together our wing command team and our mission partners so we could review our plans for the storm and the preparation steps we've taken thus far. And don't forget, even while we're preparing for the coming storm we still have a Falcon 9 to launch tomorrow carrying the X-37B. If for any reason we cannot launch tomorrow we will reevaluate whether or not we can still support another attempt on Friday.

Stay safe and communicate.

SFN stream is back from the test pattern(although you can barely see anything, are the lights off because it's "classified" or something?):

Sharks

As we reach the end of the day, I wanted to give you a quick update on where things currently stand. As we continue preparing for Hurricane Irma, we are also continuing with tomorrow’s launch operations for the X-37B on board a Falcon 9--our “window” opens at 10 a.m. While we focus on our mission and work to protect our base assets we must also make sure we are taking care of each other and preparing our homes and families for the pending storm.

With that in mind, I am working closely with state and county officials and have an open and ongoing dialogue regarding the storm's progress and whether an evacuation order will become necessary.

In the meantime; stay safe, be ready, take care of your families...we are GO for launch!

Webcast is saying live in 75 minutes. If that is when liftoff occurs, that would put launch at 14:00 UTC.

Congratulations, SpaceX.

This was a 'no pressure, right?' launch - an important, non-standard payload; the (apparent) second flight of a block-IV core; with a deadline to hit and a hurricane lurking in the distance.

They launched on-schedule, at the top of the window and made it look pretty routine. Another landing in the middle of the X.

A job well done.

Falcon 9 is starting to move into 'workhorse' territory, building a launch record at an impressive pace that will hopefully put the memories of failure behind it, particularly when they get back to operating from LC40.

To earn a reputation as a reliable and flexible launch provider is going to be a massive achievement for them.

In the short term, the recovery crews have a big job to do to get the stage horizontal and undercover - and then get themselves to safety.

A good day for SpaceX; and here's hoping that in a week's time there won't be any lasting damage to facilities or staff that will upset the impressive cadence.

Online ZachS09

Congrats to SpaceX and the USAF on launching OTV-5 on the first try!

Imagine what it would've been like if the mission was scrubbed and Hurricane Irma extended that delay.

But that's nothing to worry about because Falcon 9 performed as advertised!

Impressive performance, everybody keeping their cool and proceeding with the launch despite Irma marching up the coast towards them.
Have to say I love these DoD launches where you get all the 1st stage telemetry. Crazy to see the stage still doing 1000km/hr whilst only 5km above the pad. Just think how exciting it must be on a GTO launch with three engine landing burn.

Super-smooth launch and landing, top work by SpaceX and great commentary here at NSF, for which thanks.

The grid fins (which I want to call feathers) seemed to be making light work of steering; gentle adjustment rather than big rotations, which is how you want it. Maybe the first two burns did a good enough job of putting everything on target.

I cheer for both NASA and commercial space. For SLS, Orion, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Dragon, Starliner, Cygnus and all the rest!
I was blessed to see the launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS-99. The launch was beyond amazing. My 8-year old mind was blown. I remember the noise and seeing the exhaust pour out of the shuttle as it lifted off. I remember staring and watching it soar while it was visible in the clear blue sky. It was one of the greatest moments of my life and I will never forget it.

I enjoyed the nonchalant webcasting with the perfect launch and landing.

Congratulations SpaceX on beating the hurricane and getting a baker's dozen successful launches this year! Now stay safe Southeast US from Irma.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in this launch - smooth ride all the way through!

I missed the first two minutes after liftoff because of my commute, but I went back to watch it later.  I liked how much F9 footage the air force/boeing put into their little promo.

Now to wait for trackers to get the TLEs (and for Irma to have a go at the Cape... stay safe, everyone, and best of luck to the hardware)!
All aboard the HSF hype train!  Choo Choo!

Congrats to all teams involved.  Now get that S1 horizontal, in the barn and batten down the hatches!
Best to all in the area--stay safe...

Any word on the status of Stage 1 post-landing? Doesn't it usually take a couple of days to safe, lift, detach the legs, lower it to horizontal and move it to storage? I heard that NASA has secured KSC and is ordering evacuations.  I don't suppose they'll just leave the first stage sitting at the LZ?

I'd imagine most if not all of the media and/or fans that might be able to tell us about this are taking care of their own hurricane preparation, not sitting around watching the stage on the landing pad.  In fact I doubt they are even allowed in locations where they can see the stage...

We might hear something from SpaceX, but they're all really busy too.

I'd have to imagine they were prepared to get the stage down and into a hanger quickly.  But who knows when we will hear anything about it?

Thank you for this NSF launch update thread, and to Steven...I missed the launch due to a long commute, then making up for lost time at work.

I think Air Force brass will be impressed by the sangfroid and efficiency SpaceX displayed today under pressure. Best possible advertisement for their new launch provider.

I'm late to the party today, but congrats to all.  What a smooth accomplishment.

I love the decent video and telemtery back to the cape from the booster.
Excited to be finally into the first Falcon Heavy flow, we are getting so close!

Belated congratulations to SpaceX, the Air Force, and Boeing.  I watched it at work this morning, then kept refreshing the page until the word came of a successful orbital insertion.

I was anxious about this launch, both because of the pressure to launch before the hurricane hit, and also because there was a lot at stake regarding future national security contracts.  It looked like it went as smoothly as I could have hoped for, and the rocket cam video from the first stage on the way back was superb.

It's amazing how routine the landings have become, less than two years after the first one.

Nice work. Makin' it look easy is the way to do it! Just don't showboat TOO much.

Congrats to USAF, Boeing, SpaceX and everyone at the Cape.

Thanks as usual to the NSFers doing coverage!

45th SW launches 5th OTV mission
By 45th Space Wing Public Affairs

CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. --
The 45th Space Wing successfully launched a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle Sept. 7, 2017, from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A.

Approximately eight minutes after the launch, SpaceX successfully landed the Falcon 9 first-stage booster at Landing Zone 1 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, the 45th SW commander, thanked the entire OTV-5 mission team for their efforts in ensuring a successful launch.

“I’m incredibly proud of the 45th Space Wing’s contributions to the X-37B program,” Monteith said. “This marks the fifth successful launch of the OTV and its first onboard a Falcon 9. A strong relationship with our mission partners, such as the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, is vital toward maintaining the Eastern Range as the world’s premiere gateway to space.”

The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle is led by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, with operations overseen by Air Force Space Command’s 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron. The OTV is designed to demonstrate reusable spacecraft technologies for America’s future in space and operate experiments, which can be returned to and examined on Earth.

Congratulations to SpaceX and the USAF for the successful launch of OTV-5! Do we really have to wait nearly a month to see the next one? :-)

Two objects catalogued, 2017-052A/42932 OTV 5/USA 277 and 2017-052B/42933 Falcon rocket.  Thought the latter was supposed to de-orbit after deploying payload?

I wonder if that instantaneous puff of condensation at 6:52 in addition to those more persistent vapor streaks at the base is the moment it crossed Mach 1.

As an update, we're told the booster is off the LZ-1 pad via their expedited post landing processing which was initiated for the previous landing (CRS-12: The faster processing was a L2 note. Chris G asked Hans. Hans confirmed).

Great work by the LZ-1 team.

Great work by the LZ-1 team.

Is there a rough time period for how long expedited post landing processing takes to clear the landing pad?

It was tucked away two days after landing.
Exact work hours would be informative if anyone here can share.

Seesat-l news, a few days old:

Russell Eberst reports single sighting of an unknown bright satellite on the morning of October 3 (magnitude +2.7 if I understand his table correctly), possibly OTV-5: http://www.satobs.org/seesat/Oct-2017/0007.html

Ted Molczan then generated search elements for an assumed, quasi-55 deg. inclined orbit here: http://www.satobs.org/seesat/Oct-2017/0009.html

Search tips:
Quote
It is recommend to use wide field optics, or on favourable passes, the unaided eye. Avoid observing close to the predicted intersection with Earth's shadow.

(My note: This is definitely differing from assumptions of a 43 deg. inclined orbit elsewhere, such as www.heavens-above.com .)

No further observations mentioned on Seesat-l between October 3 and today, October 8.
