RELEASE 17-077
Three New Crew Members Arrive at International Space Station
After a six-hour flight, NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei, Joe Acaba and Alexander Misurkin of Roscosmos arrived at the International Space Station at 10:55 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Sept. 12, where they will continue important scientific research.
The three crewmates launched aboard the Soyuz MS-06 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 5:17 p.m. (3:17 a.m. Baikonur time Wednesday), orbited Earth four times, and docked at the space station. The hatches between the spacecraft and station will open at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday.
The arrival of Vande Hei, Acaba and Misurkin restores the station's crew to six, as they join Expedition 53 Commander Randy Bresnik of NASA and Flight Engineers Sergey Ryazanskiy of Roscosmos and Paolo Nespoli of ESA (European Space Agency.) The new Expedition 53 crew members will spend more than four months conducting approximately 250 science investigations in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development.
Bresnik, Ryazanskiy and Nespoli are scheduled to remain aboard the station until December, and Vande Hei, Acaba and Misurkin are slated to return in February 2018.
This marks the first long-term increase in crew size on the U.S. segment from three to four, allowing NASA to maximize time dedicated to research. Highlights of upcoming investigations include demonstrating the benefits of manufacturing fiber optic filaments in a microgravity environment, a new study looking to slow or reverse muscle atrophy in astronauts during spaceflight, and exploring the ability of a synthetic bone material that adheres bone to metal within minutes to accelerate bone repair.
The crew members also are scheduled to receive Orbital ATK’s next commercial resupply mission in November, delivering several tons of research, supplies and vehicle hardware.
For more than 16 years, humans have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth that will enable long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space. A global endeavor, more than 200 people from 18 countries have visited the unique microgravity laboratory that has hosted more than 2,100 research investigations from researchers in more than 95 countries.

Spacecraft Soyuz MS-06 launched from Baikonur
September 13, 2017
Today, September 13, in accordance with the mission plan of the International Space Station (ISS), a manned transportation spacecraft Soyuz MS-06 was launched from Baikonur launch site at 00:17:02 Moscow Time carrying onboard the crew of ISS-53/54.
The crew includes cosmonautAlexander Misurkin (spacecraft commander, Roscosmos) and astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Joseph Acaba (flight engineers, NASA).
The spacecraft separated from the third stage of the launch vehicle normally at the expected time.
Later on, at 05:55 Moscow Time, transportation spacecraft Soyuz MS-06 with a crew onboard successfully docked with the Mini Research Module Poisk (MRM2) of the International Space Station.
The rendezvous and docking were carried out in accordance with the mission plan using a four-orbit rendezvous profile after the orbital insertion. The docking was performed in fully automatic mode.
After performing a number of preparatory operations (removing and drying spacesuits, performing a leak test of compartments and the docking interface, equalizing pressure, etc.) transfer hatches between the spacecraft and the ISS were opened and the newly arrived crewmembers transfered to the station. There they were met by the commander of the international crew of ISS-53 US astronaut Randolph Bresnik and flight engineers, Russian cosmonaut Sergei Ryazansky and Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli.
From that moment on, the cosmonauts and astronauts started to work onboard the ISS as members of the full-complement crew of Expedition ISS-53.
The Soyuz MS-06 delivered to the ISS various cargoes, including life support and crew support supplies, onboard documentation packages, utilization payloads, accessories for video and photographic equipment, hardware and data storage media for science experiments, personal kits for the crew.
During ISS-53/54 the Russian cosmonauts are going to carry out 62 experiments in various fields – biology, biotechnology, geophysics, engineering and medicine. 60 of them were started in previous missions, two experiments from the line of research Physical and Chemical Processes and Materials in Space – Diffusion Flame and Electric Flame are the new ones. These experiments are supposed to provide new data on the zero-g combustion physics, which will be relevant to applications in both the development of new rocket engines, and in the safety measures to be taken onboard space vehicles. The obtained results may also find application in other spheres, for example, for flying vehicles of various types, when they fly in a mode that is close to zero gravity.
The expedition tasks include: handling Russian and US cargo vehicles, keeping station in good working order, performing onboard still and video photography to chronicle the mission of the ISS Russian Segment, and activities under the program of symbolic activities.
In addition to this, the crew is also going to perform some extravehicular activities.
The planned mission duration is 177 days.

13 September 2017
On September 13, 2017 at 05:55 Moscow time the transport manned spacecraft Soyuz MS-06 successfully docked to the docking port of the small research module "Search" of the Russian segment of the ISS. Approximation of the ship with the station passed according to the 4-cycle scheme. The docking was carried out in an automatic mode under the supervision of the crew and specialists of the Main Operations Group for Flight Control.
At 08:08 Moscow time, Alexander Misurkin , Mark Wanda Hai and Joseph Aqaba went on board the International Space Station.
At present, the crew of the 53rd expedition in the cosmonauts of Roskosmos Sergey Ryazansky and Alexander Misurkin, NASA astronauts Randolph Breznik, Mark Vande Khay and Joseph Aqaba, ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, continues to work on the ISS.
On September 13, 2017, at 00:17 Moscow time, the Soyuz-FG space rocket launched from the launch pad of the Baikonur launch site No. 1 launched into orbit the Soyuz MS-06 transport manned spacecraft with the crew of the 53 / 54th long-term expedition to the ISS.
