"Space Trip" to Moscow
« on: 11/06/2009 08:41 am »
Dear friends,

Starting in three weeks I will make a short trip to Moscow.
Do you know some interesting space sites to visit ?
For example, is it possible to visit TsUP, RKK Energia, Roskosmos or TsPK ?

Thank you very much !

Nicolas

I've been to Moscow last year. Hadn't much time to spare, so regarding space related things, I just visited Gorky park. One of the Burans is standing there. It is stripped of all systems, standing in an amusement park and serves as a restaurant. Very depressing sight. Even though this one never flown to space, it's still sad end.

Any of the places you mentioned would have required requesting a special permission to visit in advance. Not sure 3 weeks can be enough to arrange that. Membership in respected spaceflight or astronomy related societies, or being a reporter is a plus: it's much easier to get a positive resolution on behalf of a legal body.

Aside from the restricted places, the 1st two must visit exhibitions are the newly opened Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics and Tsiolkovsky Memorial Museum in Kaluga. There are also smaller scale public museums, like the Central House of Aviation and Cosmonautics, and some others.

No, it's not serving as a restaurant. it's too small for that. There's a kind of 3d movie facility inside.

Yes, I had already been there during an earlier trip. But the Buran has been rearranged since that date, so I think I will go there again ! :-)

The refurbished cosmonautics museum at VDNKh is certainly worth a visit if you have not been there yet.

There is supposed to be a museum devoted to Gherman Titov in the Moscow region, but I have no details.

A small museum devoted to Titov exists in his native village Polkovnikovo in Altai Territory (Western Siberia). I never heard of a Gherman Titov's museum in Moscow region.

Perhaps you meant museum of Space Force in Krasnoznamensk (AKA Museum of Titov Main Test and Space Systems Control Centre). It's in Moscow Region. Can't find very much info on it.

Hi Nicolas, I´m not sure, if the "Kosmonautics museum" (VDNKh) still exists. I read somewhere that in this hall is a market now. :-(
If it exists with all things, I would be interested in photos of some of the exhibited spacecrafts.

- Ekran and Gorizont - from both I would be interested to see the rear part under the big radiator, if possible and some detail-photos. (perhaps a "walk-around")

Perhaps you can find in the museums rare photos of Proton-rockets. Also in these I would be interested. ;-)

Thank you and have a nice trip!
Soeren ;-)

The Kosmos pavilion at VDNKh no longer has space exhibits, but the Cosmonautics Museum is still there.

Which must still be depressing. :D

This object was a very low fidelity model of Buran, used early in the program. There are probably similar models in the USA.

I would recommend you visit the airplane museum in Monino. I was there about 5 years ago, and there's a massive display of Soviet airplanes from almost all era's. They have one of the Tu-144 models that wasn't scrapped, and they even have some sort of spaceplane, but I forget which one. MiG-105 or Spiral or something.

They also have a hanger with parts dedicated to space.

As for getting there, I'm not sure on the exact directions, but there is a train stop near it (conveniently named "Monino," so it shouldn't be too hard to find on a map)

Nicolas,
I've created a topic at NK so that people would share their knowledge of museums related to spaceflight which are located in Russia, Ukraine and other parts of the world.
http://www.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10178

If you can read Russian, you may extract information about museums in Moscow right from there. If you can't, I can translate some of it and post here.

MiG-105 or Spiral or something.

That's MiG-105.11, a Spiral's flying prototype.

As for getting there, I'm not sure on the exact directions, but there is a train stop near it (conveniently named "Monino," so it shouldn't be too hard to find on a map)

Admission is from 9:30 till 13:30 and from 14:15 till 17:00 on the workdays except Wednesday and from 9:00 till 14:00 on Saturdays. You only have to buy a ticket at the entrance to enter the territory.

Commuter train from Yaroslavsky st. to Monino is one option, but you are better to be accompanied by a guide who has already been to that place - the museum is located about two kilometres away from the station and there are no roadsigns on the way. A guide with his own car is an ideal choice.
