Press Release
N° 22-2008
Paris, 14 April 2008

Contract signed for ESA's Sentinel-3 earth observation satellite

The European Space Agency and Thales Alenia Space today signed a ?305 million contract to provide the first Sentinel-3 earth observation satellite, devoted to oceanography and land-vegetation monitoring, as part of the European GMES programme. As prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space is responsible for the satellite's design, development and integration.

The contract was signed today in Paris by Volker Liebig, ESA Director of Earth Observation, and Pascale Sourisse, President and CEO of Thales Alenia Space, in the presence of Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA Director General, officials from the European Commission, the French Ministry of Research and Higher Education and Dominique Bussereau, French Secretary of State for Transport at the Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development & Land Management Ministry.

Underlining the value of this mission for Europe, Volker Liebig commented: "This satellite is an important element of GMES and will enable Europe to observe important ocean parameters".

Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) aims at delivering environment and security monitoring services and is being led by the European Commission. It is Europe's response to the ever-increasing demands of effective environmental policies and is at the same time the European contribution to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). ESA is responsible for the implementation of the GMES Space Component, a package of earth observation missions involving ESA, EU/ESA Member States and other partners. Central elements of this Space Component are the five families of Sentinel missions.

Sentinel-3 will provide crucial data for information services to the European Union and its Member States as part of GMES. The services to be fed data cover areas such as climate change, sustainable development, environmental policies, European civil protection, development aid, humanitarian aid and the European Common Foreign & Security Policy.

The Sentinel-3 mission will produce a consistent, long-term set of remotely-sensed marine and land data for (operational) ocean state analysis, forecasting and service provision. A comprehensive measurement system facilitating global ocean and land observation is required in order to provide data for advanced numerical forecasting models. Sentinel-3 will determine parameters such as sea surface topography, sea/land surface temperature, ocean colour and land colour with high-end accuracy and reliability. For this purpose, it carries an advanced radar altimeter and a multi-channel optical imaging instrument.

To achieve near-global coverage and meet all scientific requirements, Sentinel-3 will be placed in a high-inclination, sun-synchronous polar orbit. Near-realtime data processing and delivery will allow operational services to continuously profit from the mission.

ESA carried out the Sentinel-3 definition phase in 2005/6, drawing on an industrial consortium led by Thales Alenia Space. The implementation phase started in autumn 2007 and the launch of the first Sentinel-3 satellite is planned for 2012.

A new pair of glasses to view Earth

13 October 2010
Our view of Earth is set to become even sharper with new instruments to be carried on ESA's Sentinel-3 satellites. In many ways, it will be like looking at Earth through a new pair of glasses.

Press Release
N°04-2016

Paris, 2 February 2016

Call for Press: Sentinel-3 for the future

Media representatives are invited to the Salons Hoche event venue in Paris for the signing of a contract between ESA and Thales Alenia Space to build two more satellites for the Sentinel-3 mission.

The signing, to be held on 9 February at 17:00 CET, will ensure the continuation of the Sentinel-3 satellite series for Europe's Copernicus environmental programme.

Sentinel-3 is based on a constellation of two satellites: Sentinel-3A and -3B. With the first set for launch in February and its sister planned for launch in 2017, the mission will provide a 'bigger picture' for Copernicus with optimum global coverage
and data delivery.

While Thales Alenia Space of France has been leading a consortium of more than 100 companies to build the first two units, the Euro450 million contract to be signed in Paris will begin the development of Sentinel-3C and -3D.
Sentinel-3 carries a series of cutting-edge instruments for systematic measurements of Earth's oceans, land, ice and atmosphere.

Over oceans, Sentinel-3 measures the temperature, colour and height of the sea surface as well as the thickness of sea ice. These measurements will be used, for example, to monitor changes in sea level, marine pollution and biological productivity.

Over land, this innovative mission will monitor wildfires, map the way land is used, provide indices of vegetation state and measure the height of rivers and lakes, complementing the high-resolution measurements of its Sentinel-2 sister mission.
The Paris event will provide media representatives with the opportunity to speak with key players in ESA and the Sentinel-3 mission, including ESA Director General Jan Woerner, Director of ESA's Earth Observation Programmes Volker Liebig and Copernicus
Space Segment Programme Manager Guido Levrini.

Representatives from the European Commission, Thales Alenia Space and France's CNES space agency will also be present.

The Salons Hoche is located at 9 Avenue Hoche in Paris; the event will be taking place in Room Longchamp.

The signature of a €450 million contract to build two more satellites for the Sentinel-3 mission was celebrated by ESA and Thales Alenia Space of France at an event in Paris yesterday.

Sentinel-3 is based on a constellation of two satellites to systematically measure Earth’s oceans, land, ice and atmosphere to monitor and understand large-scale global dynamics.

The first – Sentinel-3A – is set for launch next week, while its sister satellite Sentinel-3B planned for launch in 2017.

While Thales Alenia Space has been leading a consortium of more than 100 companies to build the first two units, the contract signed yesterday initiates the development of Sentinel-3C and -3D, ensuring data continuity for Europe’s environment monitoring Copernicus programme until 2030.

First image from Sentinel-3A

Captured at 14:09 GMT on 29 February 2016 just two weeks after launch, the first image from the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite shows the transition from day to night over Svalbard, Norway. As well as showing the snow-covered archipelago, the image also details Arctic sea ice and some cloud features. The image was taken by the satellite’s Ocean and Land Colour Instrument, which features 21 distinct bands, a resolution of 300 m and a swath width of 1270 km. The instrument’s new eyes on Earth will allow ocean ecosystems to be monitored, support vegetation, crop conditions and inland water monitoring. It will also provide estimates of atmospheric aerosol and clouds, all of which bring significant benefits to society through more informed decision-making. Sentinel-3A’s instrument package also includes a Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer, a Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter and a Microwave Radiometer.

Hurricane Ophelia’s temperature

The Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite saw the temperature at the top of Hurricane Ophelia on 15 October 2017 as the storm approached the British Isles.

Ophelia has since been downgraded from a hurricane to a storm.

The brightness temperature of the clouds at the top of the storm, some 12–15 km above the ocean, range from about –50°C near the eye of the storm to about 15°C at the edges.

Hurricanes are one of the forces of nature that can be tracked only by satellites, providing up-to-date imagery so that authorities know when to take precautionary measures. Satellites deliver information on a storm’s extent, wind speed and path, and on key features such as cloud thickness, temperature, and water and ice content.

Sentinel-3’s Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer measures energy radiating from Earth’s surface in nine spectral bands and two viewing angles.

Copernicus Sentinel-3B delivers first images

9 May 2018

Less than two weeks after it was launched, the Copernicus Sentinel-3B satellite has delivered its first images of Earth. Exceeding expectations, this first set of images include the sunset over Antarctica, sea ice in the Arctic and a view of northern Europe.

The very first image, captured on 7 May at 10:33 GMT (12:33 CEST), shows the transition between day and night over the Weddell Sea in Antarctica. The satellite also captured swirls of sea ice off Greenland on the same day. Another in this first set of images offers a rare cloud-free view of northern Europe.

Tandem in images

Sentinel-3 is a two-satellite mission to supply the coverage and data delivery needed for Europe’s Copernicus environmental monitoring programme. Launched in 2016, Sentinel-3A has been measuring our oceans, land, ice and atmosphere to monitor and understand large-scale global dynamics and to provide critical information for marine operations, and more. Its twin, Sentinel-3B, was launched in April 2018 and is having its instruments calibrated and being commissioned for service. Since 6 June, the mission has been flying in tandem, separated by a mere 30 seconds. Travelling at 7.4 km per second, the separation equates to a distance of 223 km. The main point of this phase is to carefully compare the performance of instruments on the two satellites. And, as these two images over Italy show, there appears to be no discernible difference. The images were acquired by the satellites’ ocean and land colour instruments on 11 June 2018. The image on the left is from Sentinel-3B with the acquisition starting at 09:20:09 and the image on the right is from Sentinel-3A with acquisition starting at 09:20:31. ESA’s Sentinel-3 team will be analysing results very carefully over the next months to make sure any minor differences are understood and accounted for.
