Russian women in space
« on: 03/17/2007 12:53 am »
The Story Of Women In Space, Space Daily. Russian women were faced with many barriers to getting into orbit, one of the major ones being sexism from their male counterparts; something which is still apparent today. Only three Russian women have made it into orbit so far (the last in 1997).

Yeah, I mean I can't recall when there were so many women going into the Russian space program. I haven't at least heard anything about a female Astronaut from ESA yet, and so far for the Canadian Space Agency, there's been 2, with 1 who's active right now.

NASA seems to be leading when it comes to women in space.

Claudie Haigneré has flown into space twice, she was a CNES/ESA astronaut. Marianne Merchez was selected as an ESA astronaut but retired before her first space flight (she is actually the only retired ESA astronaut who has never flown).

Back in the 80s Renate Brümmer was a German astronaut who was a candidate for STS-55, but did not fly. Together with Gerhard Thiele she was the back-up crew for Schlegel and Walter who flew on STS-55.

What about Helen Sharman. Which was her agency?
I always consider space to be the FIRST frontier.

No agency... She was the chemist-technologist of Mars confectionery firm...
