A revamped berthing day article, which had to keep some key information from last week's article. Will update this as we work through to what will hopefully be a successful.

Good news!

Orbital Sciences ‏@OrbitalSciences
The software "patch" that we uploaded to #Cygnus has worked. Good relative GPS solution established with #ISS.  #cotsdemo doing well.

How far away is she right now?

How far away will she be 1 hour before capture?

EDIT:Crew is up right now.

Karen Nyberg just called down a good morning and CapCom (sounds like Cady Coleman to me) says everything looks good, on track for capture.  Nyberg said they'll talk again in about an hour and a half.

MCC-H just told Karen Nyberg that everything is looking good and they are on track for capture this morning.  They will speak again during the morning DPC.

Yeah, I think the crew is still in "post-sleep" until around 0800 GMT.  (Rendezvous ops is still more of a ground show for a while.)  I'm not aware of an up-to-date detailed rendezvous timeline, but eyeballing an old one from L2 -- and making the leap that it's still valid -- it looks like Joint OPS would be starting some time around now.

If that's the case, the spacecraft should be on the 4 km 'racetrack' below Station, still a ways from the next demos and the ADV1 burn.

As with the other visiting vehicles on their first rendezvous (well, the non-grandfathered ones) there's a long series of maneuvers prior to a go for capture, so an hour prior to that the spacecraft should be moving up the R-bar.

I just want to know because there's an ISS pass about an hour before capture in Minnesota, I want to know if I have any chance of picking out Cygnus.

Morning DPC started...Cygnus about 7 km behind and a few minutes from ADV-2 burn (which would establish the 1.4 km 'racetrack' below Station).

(While continuing with DPC, Cady Coleman noted that the ADV-2 burn was in progress...may be complete before the end of the Houston part of the DPC.)

Sounds like it was only Houston for the DPC...maneuvering to capture attitude early (no exercise beginning at 0808 GMT) and another note that the current predicted capture time would be 2 seconds before sunset, so there were extra notes for lighting conditions.  (This might become somewhat moot if things run a little long...)

Robotbeat,

I can't tell you exactly because, as pointed out above, there's a series of maneuvers in which the spacecraft holds at a position, retreats, advances that occur several times within the last few hours of the rendezvous.  These are for this first rendezvous/capture sequence only. Future missions will not do all these back and forth motions.

Cygnus reaches at the 250 meter hold point about two hours before. It gets closer and further away several times after that. The 30 meter hold position is reached about 45 minutes before capture.
In satellite operations, schedules are governed by the laws of physics and bounded by the limits of technology.

Orbital just Tweeted that the ADV-3/Approach Initiation (AI) burn is coming up at 34 minutes past the hour.
https://twitter.com/OrbitalSciences/status/384231980285837312

(And Cady Coleman in Houston called that up to the crew shortly thereafter.)
