Decal switching Delta 242
« on: 02/04/2012 11:09 pm »
At one time Delta 242 was ready to fly as Delta 241 (NOTE 241 IN DELTA TRIANGLE). I assume there was a delay and the number was assigned to the Delta flight made Jan. 17, 1997. Delta 242 flew 3.5 months later. Are there other examples of this?

Delta 313 was supposed to be a D-IV (GOES-N, launching in spring/summer 2005), but that launch got pushed back repeatedly (problems with the rocket and payload, FTS batteries expiring, payload launch date constraints, and a labor strike) and D-313 became a D-II GPS flight on 9/26/2005. GOES-N finally launched as Delta 315 on 5/24/2006.

I once discussed this with a guy who said he was the one applying the numbers.  He mentioned a mission that required him to repeatedly redo the numbers, back during the 1990s.

I noticed that the most recent Delta IV had no number in the Delta logo.  Why, I wonder aloud, doesn't ULA switch to much more sensible tail numbers for Delta as it does for Atlas?
