Christer Fuglesang newsletter, No. 1 - STS-128

On the road again! Houston, July 17, 2008

In Tuesday precedence weeks was I on a snabbvisit wide wart astronautcentrum out Köln. ESAs: nya manager for the was manning rymdprogrammet, Simonetta di Cheeping, did sits first attend there. Wes astronauts was gathering together so many the now was going amid sommarsemestrarna, for that hail hers welcome and present ours vision for future ”Beyond the International Fish slice Station”. Next of a chance so collapse self mine röstbrevlåda at the surgery in Houston. There was awaiting one message from Steve Wrap, boss for NASAs: astronautkontor: ”peek in on midst office, ors sock me a cue” The seem fair! IN well over one half-year had self gone and awaited on one indeed pungent as self indeed would come, but nots when and precise what. Self stayed nots disappointment When self ring saddle Steve ”Christine, yous am becoming utnämnd that fly at STS-128/ISS-17A, currently was leveling to 30 a hiding next year”.

Next day, on afternoon, was I back on Johnson Fish slice Centre (JSC) and kl 16 is that all utlyst one s.k. ”all glove meet” on astronautkontoret. The am spending be one of mask for nomination of crew. For a path sake indeed self in ahead what the valid. Heal complement for STS-128 present, solid only three of ourselves each in place.

Master is Frederick W. "Rick" Sturckow, often call CJ ( solid self vet nots whys – the sheep become any of the first self am asking him). He audience USAs: navy and this am becoming his fourth flygning.

Kevin Old, from air force, am becoming aviator aboard. He arrived at Nasa year 2000 and this am becoming his first rymdresa.

Uppdragsspecialist ( missions Expert) MS1 is Patriot ”Pat” Forrester. He each helikopterpilot in US Army and is astronautklasskamrat with me. He each t.o.m. ”class- superintendent” for ourselves Sardines 1996-1998. STS-128 am becoming his third flygning and he has done four rymdpromenader.

Joseph Hernandez am becoming MS2, engineer in electronics and data. He audience NASAs: latest astronautklass, ”Påfåglarna” from 2004.

MS3 is John ”Danny” Olive. His background is technic- scientific, with a doctorate in mechanics and materiallära. His first flygning each STS-117, there he did two rymdpromenader. Fact is that half mine nya crew am arriving from STS-117. Formerly Danny, also CJ and Pat ( watch photo farthest down).
As it were on STS-116 so am arriving wes that had with a female besättningsmedlem be up to International rymdstationen ISS and wes am grabbing with a return monsieur Nicole Stott am grabbing over as a of ISSs: besättningsmedlemmar behind Tim Kopra, as aviator cheer up STS-127 consequential three month ahead ourselves. They is both from 2000-bunch and had already sedan long exercised for ISS.

I have nots hunnit take order on so very if STS-128 still and how as rather aggressive still discussions if contained. But a good deal resembles STS-116. Eleven ors twelve days, product a week on rymdstationen.
Ours primarily burden is a s.k. MPLM (Multi- Purple Logistics modules The stock on field with all from food and wear to nya experiment and part. When wes doll to ISS lift MPLM from rymdfärjans lastutrymme with robots and put thorough up to a of station dockningsportar. Sedan is the only that seat igång and exhaust modules and load in sånt as ska back to field. The will exist gott if people for that assist with the was working One couple month ahead ourselves enlarge rymdstationens permanent crew from three to six astronauts and probably am putting wes nytt rymdrekord with thirteen folk at the same time in space. A of they as will product aboard is f.ö. another of remember ESA-kollegor: Stamp They Winne from Belgium. A Canadian, Bob Thirsk, ska also be there, so the lär also become decently international with people from five various countries.

The am becoming presumably three rymdpromenader for ourselves. Danny is EV1 and am arriving that make all three. Self is EV2 and do presumably two esplanade, while Nicole do a. Near which arrive to ISS is the almost färdigbyggd. All solpaneler will be at place. Only a module residue, Node-3 with Dome, one knock burspråk, there Sweden had wherein implication. Node-3 is was leveling through of 2009. Våra rymdpromenader am arriving because act if that exchange out am partaking and experiment. Bl.a. ska a grand experimentplatform on surface of ESAs: laboratoriemodul Columbia: EuTEF ( European Technology Exposure Facility) tas back to earth.

Soon am becoming the holiday and when self is back in mid of august initiates exercises for STS-128 so coding First besättningsmötet is sat to 5 September, but heltidsträning am becoming the nots traitor behind Christmas. Underline to its am helping wes parallel to with various cases within astronautkontoret. Self am holding most on with rymdpromenadsfrågor.

They latest weekly have I am working with two Russian rymdpromenader on ISS. The first each right spectacular, then they dismantle a sprängbult on its Soyuz. Somewhat similar had never done formerly and therefore had never any exercised for duties Demonteringen of sprängbulten did for that the had wherein problem wide they two latest Soyuzlandningarna. Vehicle three modulate am not having separated on right manner. Per that go away sprängbulten hope husband dels that this nots ska recur, dels kunna understand grundorsaken if husband able overhaul bolt scrupulous on field. Self followed rymdpromenaderna from kontrollcentret on JSC and igår wonder the second sat self beside Capcom and Nasas flygledare as ”expert”, solid heal esplanade in themselves leddes from ryssarnas kontrollcenter out Moscow.

A common first familjetillställning ska wes also had in September. All in complement is marry and the is many baby. Nineteen chunks in the aggregate Danny and Joseph had five each, so the tin be bump.

I will return after the "summer holidays",

Christer

So it looks like Danny Olivas will do two EVA's with Christer and one with Nicole.  These newsletters from Christer are great, it'll be interesting to track through training if he elects to do that.  Thanks jacqmans.

I'll be happy to provide a better translation :)
Even though I'm from Norway our two languages are similar enough that Norwegians can read Swedish mostly without any trouble, and vice versa.

Here's my attempt at a reasonable translation. I think I've managed to translate the text without making any sort of changes to the content.

Houston, 17.07.08

Tuesday last week, I was at a short visit to our astronaut center, outside of Köln. ESA’s new head of the manned space program, Simonetta di Pippo, made her first visit there. We astronauts had gathered as many of us as we could, to welcome her and present her to our vision for the future, “Beyond the International Space Station”.  Almost by coincidence, I checked my voice mail at my office in Houston. There a message from Steve Lindsey, the Chief of NASA’s Astronaut Office was waiting for me “Come by my office, or give me a call.” This seemed promising! For over a half year I had been waiting for a certain call I knew was coming, but not when and exactly what. I was not disappointed. When I called back Steve said “Christer, you’ll be assigned to fly on STS-128/ISS17-A, for the moment planned for 30. July next year”.

Next day, in the afternoon, I was back at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) and at 4 p.m. a so called “All hands meeting” was scheduled. This is usually a front for flight crew assignments. For once I knew beforehand what the meeting was about. The entire crew for STS-128 was announced, however only three of us were present.

Commander on the flight is Frederick W. “Rick” Sturckow, commonly known as CJ (I don’t know why – it will be one of the first things I’ll ask him about). He’s in the US Marine Corps and this will be his fourth flight.

Kevin Ford, from the Air Force, is the pilot on board. He came to NASA back in 2000 and this will be his first spaceflight.

Mission Specialist MS1 is Patrick “Pat” Forrester. He was a helicopter pilot in the US Army and is an astronaut classmate of mine. He was even “class leader” for us Sardines 1996-1998. STS-128 will be his third flight and he has previously conducted four spacewalks.

Jose Hernandez will be our MS2, engineer in electronics and computers. He belongs to NASA’s latest astronaut class, the Peacocks from 2004.

MS3 is John “Danny” Olivas. His background is technical-scientific, with a doctorate in mechanical engineering and materials science. His first flight was STS-117, where he conducted two spacewalks. Fact is that half of my new crew comes from STS-117. In addition to Danny, also CJ and Pat [where on that flight].

Just as on STS-116 we’ll have with us a female crewmember up to the International Space Station, and we’ll bring back a male crewmember. Nicole Stott relieves Timothy Kopra as a station crewmember, who flies to the station on STS-127, roughly three months before us. They’re both from the class of 2000 and have trained for a long time to fly on the ISS.

I haven’t had time to get know that much about STS-128 yet, and discussions are still ongoing about the content of the flight. But much of it resembles STS-116. Eleven or twelve days, whereof one week will be spent at the space station.

Our primary payload is a so called MPLM (Multi-Purpose Logistics Module). It’s filled up on the ground with everything from food and clothes to new experiments and spare parts. Once we have docked, the MPLM is lifted out of the shuttle’s payload bay with the robot arm and docked to one of the station’s docking ports. Then it’s just to start offloading the supplies. There will be plenty of people to help with that job. A couple of months before we arrive, the station’s permanent crew is expanded from three to six astronauts, so we’ll also set a new record with thirteen people in space at the same time. One of those on board will be another of my ESA colleagues; Frank De Winne from Belgium. A Canadian, Bob Thirsk, will also be there, so it will really be international with people from five different countries.

There will probably be three spacewalks for us. Danny is EV1 and will be doing all three. I’m EV2 and will probably do two spacewalks, while Nicole does one. When we dock to the station the ISS will be nearly finished. All the solar panels will be in place. Only one module remains, Node 3 with Cupola,  a sort of bow-window, where Sweden has been involved. Node 3 is planned for late 2009. Our spacewalks will therefore revolve around changing out parts and experiments. For instance will a big experiment platform on the outside of ESA’s laboratory module Columbus: EuTEF (European Technology Exposure Facility) be taken back to Earth.

Soon it’s vacation-time, and when I return in the middle of August we’ll start on some of the training for STS-128. First crew meeting is set for 5th September, but full time training won’t begin till after Christmas. Until that time we help out with things in the Astronaut office parallel to the training. Personally I’m mostly involved in spacewalk matters.

The past few weeks I’ve been working on two Russian spacewalks on the ISS. The first was really spectacular , when they removed an explosive bolt from their Soyuz spacecraft. Nothing like it has ever been done before and therefore no one has ever trained for it either. Taking apart the bolt was done because of problems with the two latest Soyuz landings. The vehicle’s three modules haven’t separated correctly. By removing the explosive bolt the hope is partially that the same issues won’t happen again, and partially to examine the bolt to try and discover and understand the root cause if possible, on the ground. I followed the spacewalks from the control center at JSC and yesterday, during the second one, I sat alongside Capcom and NASA’s flight director as an “expert”, though the entire spacewalk was led from the Russian control center outside Moscow.

We’ll also have our first family get-together in September. Everyone on the crew is married and there are a lot of children. Nineteen in total! Danny and Jose have five each, so it could be fun.

Best summergreetings, I’ll be back after the “summer vacation”.

Christer

Commander on the flight is Frederick W. “Rick” Sturckow, commonly known as CJ (I don’t know why – it will be one of the first things I’ll ask him about).

Fuglesang will get the story first-hand from Sturckow, but for everyone else, Marianne Dyson explained on the National Space Society blog:

In the Marines, Sturckow (who holds the rank of colonel) had a squadron commander who was referred to as "Caustic." Apparently, the young Sturckow looked like this man (he must have been a handsome guy!), and thus Sturckow became "Caustic Junior" or "CJ" for short.

(Translated)

Hi all friends                                                            Houston, 2008-08-29

Back behind holiday. It was a extraordinarily astray summer in year, with several weekly in the country in archipelago. Wes hann also with a week today Loiredalen with French friends, handsome palace, good food and interesting vinprovning . But now moment flygträning again!

Officially initiates ours drill next week ( week 36). Fr.o.m. then schemaläggs wes by an special crew-”training manager Funny enough is the same person as self had the ultimate året on precedence flygningen, STS-116, The valley Williamson. Practical that deal with with any husband already feels and the able be one of advantage if husband ska attempt jams out a vacant days here ors there. The should in and for themselves nots product so badly wonder they next month. Exercises am not leaving tread in serene mak, anyway for me as already had fly nor is so involve in others rymdfärjeflygandet. Behind New Year am counting self yet with that the am becoming full speed.

Heal complement had still nots meet at the same time – the am becoming as said only next week – but it has certain whom various duties everybody had. Here is whatever am counting for me:

Self is MS4 ( as such sheep self brown colour, anti midst orange on STS-116) and EV2, d.v.s. a of them as do rymdpromenader.
Self will have a seat mellandäck both wide take-off and landing, every bit as precedence gangway (self phrase indeed wish if that poll sits there up åtminstone ate one hold good, but the was going indeed not a little, bore) Self am sitting yet in mid and had accordingly a little more space for bone and certain possibility that peep out per the lilla the window a scrap gone to left on ingångsluckan.
I have huvudansvaret for gaps and closure of rymdfärjans lastrumsluckor, which is any of the first respect. ultimate as görs in space. But first of all am arriving self that give me up on flygdäck immediately behind MECO (Main Engine Cut Institute, d.v.s. then motors fence of) for that shoot the externa tank when the coupled relax and slowly chauffeur iväg from ourselves. This görs exclusively about which initialises in light. STS-116 launch ju on tonight, so then be able wes nots shoot tank.

As it were on STS-116 is self huvudansvarig for dockningssystemet, but am attending otherwise nots in anflygningsgöromålen and they special simuleringarna for the. Self is thereafter CMO1 – Crew Medicine Officer, first medicine aboard. The is nytt for me and will imply few establishment medical drill. The is not more than about 10 hour, but self ska watch if self nots able poll a little more. Another fresh thing is that self is delansvarig for dockningsmekanismen among MPLMn: ( watch anterior letter) and ISS: CBM (Common Berthing Mechanism). Eventually is self every bit as on STS-116 delansvarig for laptopdatorerna and network. Self am grabbing also hand if eventual small- experiment and jordobservationer as able come in question.
The here is anyway ingångsplanen. Sedan able the ju change wonder vägs.

Although exercises officially initiates next week had ours master CJ bett all that dispatch sina ”kvalificeringar” ahead its.
The is less test on various system for rymdfärjan, and whom husband requires take depend on ansvarsuppgifterna wonder flygningen. As self nots had so very with others rymdfärjan that make, so each mine conclude ”Qual” on kommunikationssystemet.
All must kunna the good. IN formerly was fixing self the ( watch photo).
Underwent of remember ansvarsuppgifter on rymdfärjan. © Fuglesang

Joseph on sits office. © Fuglesang
One other photo am exposing Joseph slippery smile in sits existing office.
Solid there am becoming he nots kvar long till then, we saw coding initiates advance into STS-128 accounts wonder next week.

IN morse each Beamer and self wide NBL ( pool for rymdpromendsträning) and chat if våra experiences from STS-116. Wes gave them also one montage and also a shield with NBL- logo as wes flew on rymdfärjan ate them. It was the very ultimate ”debriefen” for STS-116 and the very ultimate of over hundred montage as wes gave away So now able wes really say that STS-116 is definitely wholly was concluding. The knew paternal superb timing, with mind on that behind the weekend so initiates exercises officially for next flygning.

Scott Parazynski, astronaut on 5 rymdfärjor, each also there and held submission. He flew on STS-120, there they bl.a. unwind out same solpanel as we had such problem with that unwind in wonder STS-116. They brace also on problem and was getting as it were wes make a extra, very spectacular rymdpromenad, there Scott was creating solpanelen per that next sew stitch in the. (he is f.ö. physician in bottom) Solid on NBL chat he nots if its rymdfärd, devoid if when he tried mount Mont Everest in may Alas was getting he carapace precise before tops- attempt and he compel renounce, but the each yet a exciting stories and they most in his group arrived up ( and down) helskinnade.

On picture bags Scott (t.v.), Beamer (t.h.) and self with Monitor (among Scott and me) as vouch for våra rymddräkter and also two diver as am helping ourselves in pool when wes am training rymdpromenader.

Christine Fuglesangs nyhetsbrev, nr 3 STS-128

http://www.snsb.se/fuglesangnybrev_2_3.shtml

(translated)

hi
                                                                                        Houston, 2008-09-05
The is delightfully that product back in saddle again

The feel really so behind any days with pure and målinriktad rymdflygningsträning.
Self had a simulation in an of they less rymdfärjesimulatorerna together with Danny. The was going most out on that practice how wes applies and am following checklistor for a little more intrikata situations.
Heal complement was getting a lesion if they various livsuppehållande systems on rymdstationen: all from syrgasproduktion and koldioxidrensning of air, to brandalarm and lavatory

Rymdpromenadsgänget – Danny (EV1), Christine (EV2), Pat (IV – dvs. the as am holding in all inifrån wonder esplanade) and Joseph (rymddräktspåklädare) – was getting a underwent of they specialverktyg as directed often applies wonder rymdpromenader.

We had also wart first meetings together
Master CJ was retelling if how he am leveling nurse the heal and what he expects themselves of ourselves all.
He has few second ideas than mine anterior master, Novel, so the will become a bit different but self is convince if that the am becoming equal bump with this complement as with STS-116.

We have few less exercise room on ourselves this gangway, so currently find the nots space for any NOLS- tripod, creature the we did it to Canyonlands in Utah in may 2005
(watch webbrev nr 38, 05-06-06).

But am becoming the delay, so maybe...

IN am going behind was working was bidding wes on the traditional ”utnämningsfesten”.
Every crew am spending bidder in colleague, träningsteam, family and any close friends on a reception for that celebrate appointment.

Reception each in his own way ”Terra Luna Grill”, a restaurant as Joseph wife chauffeur, only any quarters from JSC. Standings and going beer, margarine and tex-mex småmat for maybe hundred committee wonder one couple hour

Afterwards åkte Lisa and self and was listening on ”Max Q” as did one of sina rare appearance around.
They is really really good.
It has as said wherein funny days!

Salutation,

do people find the google translation sufficient or should the forum members from Sweden try to make a better translation of it?

Following the enthusiastic response to earlier competitions to name European astronaut missions, ESA's Directorate of Human Spaceflight is once again giving European citizens the opportunity to be part of a space mission by suggesting a name for ESA astronaut Christer Fuglesang's mission to the International Space Station.

That last newsletter has a few interesting notes in it:

- Christer doubts the current launch date of 18/8 will hold, and that a delay by a few days is nearly inevitable.
- Will join crewmate Jose Hernandez in twittering about the preparations before launch, starting around the time of the crew's TCDT. He will however not twitter during the flight.

A few interesting notes in it:

- Christer thinks August 21 is the most likely launch date
- They might add a 4th EVA on flightday FD9 and move the current EVA3 on FD10. This EVA will do the tasks not completed by STS-127. The new EVA will likely be preformed by Tim Kopra and Patrick G. Forrester, mainly because Tim has practiced on alot of the tasks for STS-127

Um... If this has been said in a briefing recently, than I apologize, but the current NET launch date for this mission is the 25th or 26th of August.

Furthermore, the Agency (SOMD) FRR is NOT until August 18 -- and the SOMD FRR is always about nine or eight days BEFORE liftoff.

Also, it takes 22-days (minimum) to process a Shuttle vehicle for launch out at the pad. Discovery's rollout date is August 5th -- which means the 23rd is not an option.

The date I got (23:rd), was from Christer Fuglesangs newsletter. But as he wrote, they keep changing the date, but the 23:rd was the last he had heard at the time he wrote the newsletter. But NASA still have the 25:th as the earliest launch time at their web site.

Well, it's to early to make travel arrangements. I just have to wait and see.

Cheers,

I know.  And I knew where you were coming from.  It's just that, while I LOVE the fact that Christer writes these letters, the information in them can sometimes be taken as fact when it IS just conjecture, speculation, and a "last I heard" kind of thing.  The only point I was trying to make is that, while he heard the 23rd as the earliest possible date, the timelines just simply don't support that -- even with rollout to Pad-A now on the 3rd.
