JPL did a very good job showing off their NEO office, etc. Sample return:

Always been Texas hosted :)

Meanwhile........

Slightly leftfield, but rather than repeating what's already out there with these Friday events, focused on the future missions:

13 mins to impact closest approach.

I fell off the ol' armchair laughing at that one!  Thanks.

There's a couple of bits of data that I'm hoping will get some publicity.

1) The degree to which 2012 DA14's orbit was perturbed by the encounter with the Earth/Moon system's gravitational pull (might help us fine-tune density estimates and make deducing its composition easier);

2) Did the asteroid shed any fragments (there is a theory that many small NEOs are 'piles of rubble' held together by mutual gravity.  The stronger gravity of the Earth might have pulled some bits off, altering the final orbit of 2012 DA14 as well as adding chaotic elements into calculating its future orbit).

1) For something that much lighter than the Earth and Moon, the orbital perturbation would not detectably depend on its mass.

2) That's an interesting possibility, and the radar folks are looking closely for signs of a variety of such effects.

Rubble piles probably wouldn't shed material unless they get closer than the Roche limit, which to the first order would 1.26 Earth radii, so 1700 km altitude. That's quite a bit higher than the altitude of DA14 at perigee, so not likely.

The tidal forces did probably "puff up" the asteroid, weakening it structurally, and making it more rubble-pile-y. That also probably resorted a lot of small rubble to the surface, making the "pools" of gravel that were seen on Eros and Itokowa.

Any word on when NASA will release radar images planned for collection from Goldstone?

Early Radar Observations of Asteroid 2012 DA14

Published on Feb 19, 2013
Radar observations of asteroid 2012 DA14 generated from data obtained by NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar on Feb. 15-16, 2013. During the observations, the space rock's distance increased from 74,000 to 195,000 miles (120,000 to 314,000 km) from Earth.

The movie is comprised of 73 radar "images" looped nine times.

Resolution is 4 meters per pixel.
