ISS039-S-001 (April 2013) --- Increment 39 of the International Space Station Program marks the 15th year of operation since the start of the space laboratory assembly. Today, the U.S., Russia, Japan, Canada and the European Space Agency are partnering in the operation of the largest ever orbital outpost managed by humankind. The names of the six crew members are depicted in their native languages. For Expedition 39, the Soyuz spacecraft serves as transport vehicle for the crew members to and from the station. During this expedition, the ISS will serve as a platform for scientific research, Earth and astronomical observation, education, as well as a stage for the development of new technologies used for the exploration beyond low Earth orbit. The star above the complex signifies human space exploration towards new frontiers. The crew members added these words: "The crew of Expedition 39 is proud to serve the international community in furthering our scientific knowledge and in expanding human presence in space." That is what I understood from the video too. We might have wait until either L2 confirms or some additional info becomes publicly available.

Mike Suffredini mentioned during the EVA near miss press conference that 3 US EVAs were slated for the July-August time-frame pending progress on meeting report recommendations.  Two EVAs to service the PVTCS and one to permanently stow the failed pump module along a long series of deferred tasks would fill up three EVAs.
Best quote heard during an inspection, "I was unaware that I was the only one who was aware."

New Commander on the Space Station

Command of the International Space Station was passed from cosmonaut Oleg Kotov to Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on March 9. The change of command makes Wakata, who will oversee Expedition 39, the first Japanese commander of the complex. He, NASA Flight Engineer Rick Mastracchio and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin will be joined on March 26 by NASA's Steve Swanson and cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyaev and Oleg Artemyev.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 03/10/14

Posted on March 10, 2014 by HQ.

36 Soyuz (36S) Departure/Landing: Soyuz 36S undocked from the MRM2 zenith port bringing Commander (CDR) Kotov, Flight Engineer (FE)-2 Ryazanskiy and FE-3 Hopkins back to earth. The undock command, which initiated the opening of the Soyuz vehicle docking hooks was issued at 7:01pm CDT with physical separation occurring a minute and a half later.  The Soyuz deorbit burn started at 9:30pm CDT and entry was nominal.  Soyuz 36S landing occurred at 10:24pm CDT in the nominal region.

Area Dosimeter Removal for Return:  FE-6 Wakata removed the second area radiation dosimeter on Saturday from the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) and handed it over to a Russian crewmember for return on 36S.

Space Midge Experiment Closeout:  On Saturday Wakata watered and later fixated three Midge samples for return on the 36S vehicle.  The fixation preserves the RNA of the recovered larvae for post-flight analysis on the ground.  Dry larvae of the sleeping chironomid (midge) have a molecule responsible for desiccation tolerance.  These larvae will be examined to determine the impact of the space environment on their desiccation tolerance and their gene expression in response to the microgravity environment.

NanoRacks Module 9 Investigation:  On Saturday Wakata activated and shook designated mixing tubes for the last of the six NanoRacks Module 9 sessions.  Student teams from across the United States designed these experiments using flight approved fluids and materials. This investigation is part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP), which is sponsored by the commercial Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education program that is overseen by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE).

Ham Video Commissioning:  On Saturday and Sunday FE-3 Hopkins supported two Ham Video configuration tests.  These tested the Ham Video system in different configurations during passes over the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) ground station.

Aniso Tubule Closeout:  On Sunday, Wakata removed the Sample Chamber from the Multi Purpose Small Payload Rack (MSPR) flourescent microscope following 48 hours of observation.   This completed the fifth of five planned runs.  JAXA’s Aniso Tubule experiment investigates the roles of cortical microtubules and microtubule-associated proteins in gravity-induced growth modification of plant stems.

Sprint Ultrasound Scans: With FE-5 Mastracchio supporting as operator and with remote guidance from the ground, Wakata conducted Sprint ultrasound scans of his thigh and calf. This is part of Wakata’s Flight Day 120 session. The Integrated Resistance and Aerobic Training Study (Sprint) investigation evaluates the use of high intensity, low volume exercise training to minimize loss of muscle, bone, and cardiovascular function in ISS crewmembers during long-duration missions.

Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) Rope Remove and Replace (R&R): With assistance from Wakata, Mastracchio replaced the ARED rope today.  This is regularly scheduled ARED maintenance.

ISS Daily Summary Report – 03/12/14
http://blogs.nasa.gov/stationreport/2014/03/12/iss-daily-summary-report-031214/

Crew Handover Conference: In preparation for 38 Soyuz (38S) arrival scheduled for March 26, Commander (CDR) Wakata and Flight Engineer (FE)-5 Mastracchio participated in a conference to pass on lessons learned to the 38S Crew. The purpose of this activity is to begin the handover process through videocons and data exchanges between the current crew and the upcoming crew prior to a crew’s arrival on orbit.

Combustion Integration Rack (CIR) Needle Remove and Replace (R&R) Preparation: Wakata reviewed the plan and gathered hardware in preparation for the bent CIR needle R&R this Friday, On February 13th the Multi-user Droplet Combustion Apparatus (MDCA) CIR needle was bent during igniter position ground commanding. The CIR is currently configured for MDCA FLame Extinguishment Experiment (FLEX)-2, which uses small droplets of fuel to study the special burning characteristics of fire in space. The FLEX-2 experiment studies the rate and manner in which fuel is burned, the conditions that are necessary for soot to form, and the way in which a mixture of fuels evaporate before burning. The results from these experiments will give scientists a better understanding how fires behave in space and will provide important information that will be useful in increasing the fuel efficiency of engines using liquid fuels.

Robotics On Board Trainer (ROBoT) Session 2: Wakata and Mastracchio conducted the second session of this training today in preparation for SpX-3 which is scheduled to launch this Sunday, March 16. This session covers Dragon approach from 30m hold through capture. It also provides a big picture review of required coordination between the two crew members.

Periodic Fitness Evaluation (PFE): Mastracchio completed this periodic examination with assistance from Wakata acting as Crew Medical Officer (CMO). PFEs monitor crewmembers’ overall fitness levels to ensure that cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health and performance is satisfactory. The activity consists of performing a graded exercise test on the Cycle Ergometer with Vibration Isolation and Stabilization (CEVIS).

Node 3 Mass Constituent Analyzer (MCA) Sample Pump:   The Node 3 MCA sample pump 1 reached end of life today.  The MCA was successfully restarted using sample pump 2.  Sample pump 1 was well beyond expected life.  There is a spare pump on board, and the Laboratory (LAB) MCA is also outfitted with a pump not currently in use and is available if necessary.  No further troubleshooting is planned at this time.

Lab Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) Air Selector Valve Fault:  The Lab CDRA air select valve experienced a fault earlier today during a half cycle transition.  Ground teams recovered and CDRA is back in operate mode.
