The second Soyuz launch campaign with Globalstar second-generation satellites has begun at Baikonur Cosmodrome

March 22, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

Preparations are now underway for Arianespace’s next Soyuz mission to deploy Globalstar’s second-generation satellite constellation, which is scheduled during May from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The six spacecraft to be lofted by Soyuz arrived last week at the Cosmodrome, delivered by an Antonov An-124 that also brought the ground support equipment for the satellites’ pre-launch checkout.

Globalstar has contracted with Arianespace for a total of four Soyuz launches carrying six spacecraft each to orbit its second-generation constellation, which will be composed of 24 satellites.  The mission in May will be the second such flight, building on the successful kick-off launch conducted last October.  After the upcoming mission, Globalstar plans two additional flights within 60-90 days following each of the previous launches.

These spacecraft will join eight first-generation platforms launched during 2007 in support Globalstar’s current lineup of voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services – including the company’s SPOT retail consumer products.

Globalstar’s second-generation satellites are 700-kg.-class spacecraft with a trapezoidal-shaped main body, enabling six of them to be integrated on a dispenser system for the Soyuz missions.

The Globalstar flights are being performed on behalf of Arianespace by its Starsem affiliate.

Soyuz launchers have played a key role in the creation of Globalstar’s satellite constellations.  Eight Soyuz missions conducted by Starsem from 1999 to 2007 orbited a total of 32 first-generation Globalstar spacecraft.  On these previous flights, each mission carried four of the 450-kg. first-generation satellites.

Globalstar has over 425,000 subscribers for the company’s mobile satellite voice and data services.  It provides coverage in more than 120 countries around the world, with users in sectors that include oil and gas, government, business, mining, forestry, commercial fishing, utilities, military, transportation, heavy construction and emergency preparedness, along with individual recreational users.

Processing is underway for Globalstar's second-generation satellites to be launched by Soyuz in May

April 1, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

The six Globalstar second-generation satellites to be orbited by Arianespace’s next Soyuz mission from Baikonur Cosmodrome are well advanced in their preparations as activities continue for the liftoff during May.

In a phased process, these 700-kg.-class spacecraft are proceeding through electrical and propulsion system checks, pressurization, fueling and weighing – readying them for integration on a conical-shaped dispenser that subsequently will be installed on the Soyuz launcher.

The ongoing satellite preparations are being performed in the Cosmodrome’s Payload Processing Facility (PPF) and Hazardous Processing Facility (HPF) operated by Arianespace’s Starsem affiliate, which also will conduct the Soyuz launch on behalf of Arianespace.

Globalstar has contracted with Arianespace to conduct a series of four Soyuz launches, each of which will carry six of the second-generation satellites for a total of 24 spacecraft.  The upcoming flight in May is the second such mission, following a successful inaugural launch last October.  In keeping up the pace, Globalstar plans two additional flights with 60-90 day intervals.

The second-generation Globalstar satellites were produced by Thales Alenia Space and have trapezoidal-shaped main bodies that are designed to enable the “cluster” of six to be integrated on a conical-shaped dispenser for each flight.

These satellites are designed to support Globalstar’s current lineup of voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services – including the company’s lineup of SPOT retail consumer products.  They will join eight first-generation Globalstar spacecraft launched in 2007 to form a 32-satellite constellation.

Yes, four of six Globalstar-2 satellites will be returned to Thales Alenia Space. Four new satellites will be delivered to Baikonur instead of them. The launch is planned in the end of June or in the beginning of July.

Launch delay for Soyuz Flight ST23
April 11, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

Globalstar has announced a launch delay for the upcoming Arianespace Soyuz mission, which will deploy six of the company’s second-generation satellites from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Originally scheduled for mid-May, the launch was delayed on the recommendation of satellite manufacturer Thales Alenia Space – which determined that additional technical checks of the spacecraft were necessary in order to respect the quality process and secure the mission.

Globalstar does not anticipate a lengthy delay, and is working closely with Thales Alenia Space to provide additional information on the new launch timing as it becomes available.

Nicolas:

"inertial wheels"?.  That kind of sounds "systemic"?  Last year the Skyterra 1 satellite was returned to Boeing due to out of specification lubricant on the Inertial Wheels.

Do you have any data on the number of satellites that were returned to Thales?  The number floating around was 4, but not sure if you can confirm?  I am hearing  around July 8th for the next launch.  Any idea when replacement LEO's will be shipped to Baikonur.  For a July 8th launch we should see the six week program begin again the middle of this month.  We saw a picture with two of the latest satellites mounted to the upper dispenser about a month ago, but not sure if those were later removed for return to Thales?

Anyone have an update on Globalstar satellite re-delivery.

I think it was supposed to take place last week in Rome.  Wasn't sure when they will return to Baikonur.

According to info I received at the Shareholder Meeting last week.  They state that all of the wheels, on all of the satellites will be run at ~half-speed, once the satellites are on-orbit and phased.

Globalstar’s six-satellite “cluster” is integrated for the Arianespace Soyuz launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome

http://www.arianespace.com/news-mission-update/2011/813.asp

July 1, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

The six Globalstar satellites for Arianespace’s upcoming Soyuz mission from Baikonur Cosmodrome have been encapsulated in their protective payload fairing, advancing preparations for the July 11 liftoff into the final phase.

This encapsulation occurred today in Baikonur Cosmodrome’s Upper Composite Integration Facility (UCIF), placing the dispenser with its integrated Globalstar satellites inside the ST-type payload fairing – which has a diameter of 4.1 meters and an overall length of 11.4 meters.

With this step, the mission’s payload component – which incorporates the fairing, its six trapezoidal-shaped Globalstar satellites and the mission’s Fregat upper stage – is ready for mating with the assembled Soyuz launch vehicle.

Arianespace’s July 11 mission will be the no. 2 Soyuz flight with a six-spacecraft cluster of Globalstar’s second-generation satellites, following an on-target launch performed from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan last October.  Two follow-on missions are planned later this year, deploying a constellation to support Globalstar’s mobile satellite services for commercial and government customers in more than 120 countries.

These Soyuz flights are being performed for Arianespace by its Starsem affiliate, utilizing the improved Soyuz 2 launcher that also will be operated by Arianespace from the Spaceport in French Guiana.

The Globalstar second-generation satellites were built by Thales Alenia Space and weigh approximately 700 kg. each at liftoff.  They will handle Globalstar’s voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services – including its lineup of SPOT retail consumer products. These new spacecraft are

Final Soyuz launcher integration is underway for Arianespace's Globalstar mission from Kazakhstan

July 7, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

The payload of six Globalstar second-generation satellites to be orbited on Arianespace’s upcoming Soyuz mission from Baikonur Cosmodrome has been integrated to its launch vehicle’s third stage.

This advances the July 11 flight’s preparations into their final phase, and involved mating of the upper composite – composed of six Globalstar spacecraft and their dispenser system, along with the protective ST-type payload fairing and the Fregat upper stage – to the Soyuz’ Block I third stage.

The activity occurred in the Baikonur Cosmodrome’s Soyuz vehicle assembly building, known as MIK 40, and will be followed by the final integration step to complete the four-stage Soyuz vehicle.

Arianespace’s mission from Kazakhstan will be performed by its Starsem affiliate, which is responsible for commercial Soyuz launches from the Cosmodrome.  It is the second of four flights contracted with Arianespace to orbit 24 of Globalstar’s second-generation spacecraft.  The first such launch was performed in October 2010.

Each of the six Thales Alenia Space-built satellites to be deployed during this flight weigh approximately 700 kg., and they will handle Globalstar’s voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services – including its lineup of SPOT retail consumer products.  Developed to last for 15 years, they offer twice the design life of Globalstar’s first-generation satellites.

Globalstar was the initial customer for Arianespace’s Starsem affiliate, which successfully orbited 24 first-generation spacecraft between February and November 1999 using six Soyuz vehicles. In subsequent Soyuz missions performed in May and October 2007 by Starsem, eight replacement spacecraft were orbited to join the constellation – which is now being followed by the new series of flights with Globalstar’s second-generation relay spacecraft.

Scrub! Postponed for at least a day.

(was actually hoping for this - maybe they'll fix their video equipment by then!)

Well, that's a downer. No live video footage due to equipment failures... :(

Hope it wasn't a Globalstar connection they were relying on!  ;)

Soyuz launch with Globalstar second-generation satellites is postponed

July 11, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

Today’s launch of six Globalstar second-generation satellites was postponed following the countdown’s interruption prior to liftoff of the Soyuz vehicle from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The Soyuz and its spacecraft passengers were put into a safe condition on the launch pad, and additional information on the mission’s rescheduling will be provided as soon as available.

This flight will be performed for Arianespace by its Starsem affiliate, and is the second of four launches contracted with Arianespace to orbit 24 satellites for Globalstar’s second-generation satellite constellation.

The six Thales Alenia Space-built satellites to be deployed during the mission weigh approximately 700 kg. each, and they will handle Globalstar’s voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services – including its lineup of SPOT retail consumer products.

So are we thinking this is longer than a 24 hour delay?

Got an e-mail from Arianespace saying there will be another attempt tonight at 0243 UTC.

Also says that the scrub was due to ground equipment.

Soyuz launch with Globalstar second-generation satellites is postponed 24 hours

July 11, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

Today’s orbiting of six Globalstar second-generation satellites was postponed 24 hours following the countdown’s interruption prior to liftoff of the Soyuz launch vehicle from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The countdown was stopped because of an equipment malfunction on the Soyuz launch pad, and the launcher with its spacecraft passengers immediately were put into a safe condition.

Liftoff of the mission is rescheduled for July 12 at 8:43 a.m. local time at Baikonur Cosmodrome (02:43 a.m. UTC).

This flight is being performed for Arianespace by its Starsem affiliate, and is the second of four launches contracted with Arianespace to orbit 24 satellites for Globalstar’s second-generation satellite constellation.

The six Thales Alenia Space-built satellites to be deployed during the mission weigh approximately 700 kg. each, and they will handle Globalstar’s voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services – including its lineup of SPOT retail consumer products.

One of our French forum members says here that one of the service arm did not retract successfully.

Consequently, the countdown was interrupted at T-2,5s.

It took one hour to secure the launcher, and during this time lapse, the satellites were running on batteries. So, after it was necessary to charge them.

Apparently, more checks needed in repairs made yesterday on the lower umbilical mast that failed to retract.

Here, in Baykonur, we're waiting for an official statement by Arianespace CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall at 9:00 am local time (0300 UTC).

Swing arms aren't happy these days.
If I like something on NSF, it's probably because I know it to be accurate.  Every once in a while, it's just something I agree with.  Facts generally receive the former.

The umbilical arm is fixed.

Today's problem comes from a delay in reconfiguring the launcher and readying it for a second attempt.

It's been a very warm day yesterday, so I'm not too surprised.

There should be a new launch attempt tomorrow (to be confirmed). Else, the launcher will have to go back to MIK for reprocessing (AFAIU it cannot remain more than 3 days on pad once it has been filled).

Is the Soyuz fueled during all of this? Or were you talking about something besides the main fuel tanks that were "filled"?

Yes, I think the kerosene is left on board in the event of a delay.

he was still there on the last min of the count.  You will have to go back a few minutes to see him moving into position.

Mission accomplished! Arianespace and Starsem orbit six new Globalstar-2 satellites

Baikonur, July 13, 2011

On Wednesday, July 13, Arianespace and Starsem orbited six new satellites of the Globalstar-2 constellation.

The 1,774th launch of a Soyuz family rocket (Soyuz-Fregat version) took place at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The launcher lifted off at 02:27 Universal Time on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 (8:27 am local time, 4:27 am in Paris, and 7:24 pm in San Francisco, on Tuesday, July 12).

Arianespace, Starsem and their Russian partners confirmed that the Fregat orbital stage accurately injected the six Globalstar-2 satellites into their targeted orbit. Two successive firings of the Fregat stage were needed to carry out this mission. After stabilization of the stage, the dispenser released the two satellites positioned in its upper section; 1 minute and 40 seconds later, the four satellites in the lower part of the dispenser were released simultaneously. The six satellites were injected into orbit 1 hour and 38 minutes after liftoff.

This latest success for the Soyuz launcher – and for the Fregat upper stage (23 missions, 23 successes) – clearly indicates the capabilities of the Samara Space Center (TsSKB-Progress) and NPO Lavotchkine, as well as the skills of the operating teams working under the authority of Russian space agency Roscosmos.

Each Globalstar-2 satellite, built by Thales Alenia Space, weighs approximately 650 kg at launch. The new constellation features an optimized design to provide telephone and data transmission services to businesses and individuals in more than 120 countries.

The first 6 satellites of the Globalstar-2 constellation were orbited successfully by Arianespace and Starsem on October 19, 2010.

The 12 other satellites comprising the constellation will be launched from Baikonur by Arianespace and Starsem during the second half of 2011.

From February to November 1999, Starsem had launched the 24 satellites in the Globalstar-1 constellation and in 2007 launched eight replacement satellites.

Soyuz delivers six satellites for Globalstar's constellation on an Arianespace mission from Baikonur Cosmodrome

July 13, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST23

Arianespace successfully orbited another batch of six spacecraft for Globalstar’s second-generation satellite network this morning on a mission performed with the medium-lift Soyuz launcher from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The flight was carried out on Arianespace’s behalf by its Starsem affiliate, lifting off at 8:27 a.m. local time.  Soyuz’ Fregat upper stage then performed two successive firings, followed by the orbital injection of the six satellites 1 hour and 38 minutes after liftoff.

“We are happy to have successfully launched the 10th Soyuz for Globalstar and we are ready to get right to work for the 11th launch,” stated Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall.  “We are also proud to know that today’s six satellites will join the Globalstar constellation, thus improving its ability to serve the customers – and we look forward to our continued participation in the Globalstar success.”

Today’s flight was the 23rd for Starsem and utilized the Soyuz 2 evolved version of Russia’s venerable medium-lift workhorse launcher.  Incorporating the enlarged ST payload fairing and an updated digital flight control system, the Soyuz 2 also will be used by Arianespace at the Spaceport in French Guiana – operating side-by-side with its heavyweight Ariane 5 vehicle and the future Vega lightweight launcher.

For the Globalstar missions, Soyuz 2 is equipped with a 6.7-meter-high conical-shaped dispenser, on which the six trapezoidal satellites are installed.  These second-generation spacecraft were built by Thales Alenia Space and weighed approximately 700 kg. each at liftoff. They are to handle Globalstar’s voice, Duplex and Simplex data products and services – including its lineup of SPOT retail consumer products.

Globalstar was the very first customer for Starsem, which was created to perform commercial Soyuz missions from Baikonur Cosmodrome.  Using six Soyuz launchers from February and November 1999, it orbited 24 first-generation satellites for Globalstar – representing one-half of the company’s original constellation.

From May 2007 to October 2010, two follow-on Soyuz missions lofted eight additional satellites to join the Globalstar constellation, followed last October by the first of four additional missions contracted with Arianespace to orbit a total 24 of Globalstar’s second-generation spacecraft.

Looking at the pictures with people working (I assume they aren't tourists) around the pad during LOX fueling. Is that a normal practice? Do we see that many people near the with western launches?

Seven objects are currently being tracked in the 900 km orbit, 2011-33A to 33F or 37739 to 37745. It was expected that only the 6 payloads would be in this orbit, and the Fregat stage would have been deorbited by now. It's possible that the Fregat deorbit burn failed, or that one of the objects in the catalog is a tracking error - I am suspicious of the element sets attributed to 37744. Should become more clear in a few days.

Indeed, 37744 hasn't had any recent element sets and I suspect it is a mistake.

Does anyone know the Fregat serial for this launch?  (Andrey? Stan? hello? :-))

An alternate explanation is that 37744 de-orbited after 14 or so orbits.

True - although I think at least the third elset is actually a ghost of 37745

Fregat was expected to deorbit much sooner than that, based on the previous flight. Thanks for pointing out Rui's scoop on the Fregat number!

The launch is planned at 03:34 UTC on May 14th.

Anyone have any data on the 2.1A launcher for this launch?  Has it been delivered yet?

Thanks,
