Ascent - Commemorating Shuttle
« on: 12/08/2010 01:22 am »
This little video found it's way to YouTube

You have to both watch and listen to this 45 minute video as it has a lot of background information about the launch cameras.  Hope everybody enjoys

Very nice. Looks like they edited in some QuVIS shots (we've got about 5,000mb+ of those on L2 from several launches) and some HD camera stuff.

They've only gone to 480p on youtube, so the quality is much less than the actual videos (probably due to the upload limit on youtube), but still very cool and some nice commentary.

People are going to look back on this sort of thing in about five years and think "damn, we gave that up", I bet.

Great video and many thanks to J for uploading the full 2.5 Gigabyte DVD, at DVD quality, to L2. Burned it and it's tear jerkingly stunning quality on the widescreen TV.

Well done to the guy who produced it.

One of the best perks of being Shuttle Program manager occurs late on launch day.  After the launch, after the beans&cornbread, after the press conference, several of us (always Gerst and me) would go back over to the VAB to the imagery lab.  The Final Inspection Team guys would be going over all the HD video frame by frame looking for stuff.  Sitting in the viewing room close to the screen where the HD is projected, you feel like you are right there.  Whew.  Of course, they run it backwards half the time, so you can get dizzy.  NASA should sell tickets . . .

They certainly should.  They could fund STS-135 with ticket sales alone if they wanted.

Hmm....beans and cornbread. The late Steve Leonard, aka. "Shamu", bought some out to us from the firing room one time after a scrub. Yeah......was about what I expected from a gov. mess hall, lol. But hey, who am I to mess with tradition? Lol

Really amazing footage. :) Say is this on dvd as the video mentions a few times?

At 36 minutes, 26 seconds, you can see the SRB nozzles move to start the roll program.  You never notice that real time at launch.

The authors produced a small patch of dvd's and gave them away as handouts at some speaking sessions they attended. This is not an official NASA publication.

The DVD version is available for download on L2 right here on this site.

I'm watching it right now on my lunch hour here in Denver and it's incredible.  They provide some interesting statistics while the imagery is rolling.

He really is. He gave the same (or at least, a similar) presentation at an AIAA banquet I went to last year (which by chance just happened to be at Cape Canaveral, and to fall on the launch date of STS-133. What a mess that made), even passing around samples of ET foam and a large piece of an RCC t-seal that he told me flew on Discovery. Afterwards he gave out autographed copies of a large-format poster he designed, as well as NASA meatball stickers. I got to talk to him a little bit about CAIB, it was nice.

He was playing Ascent on the projector during the very long wait for guests to show up, but I didn't know at the time that he had produced it.
