RSC Energia: spacecraft Soyuz МС-02 was leak tested in the vacuum chamber

September 1, 2016

RSC Energia and SC Yuzhnyi specialists successfully performed leak tests of the manned transportation spacecraft (MTS) of the new modification Soyuz МС-02 in the vacuum chamber in Baikonur cosmodrome.

Closeout operations are on-going on the spacecraft before it is filled with propellant components and compressed gasses in the fueling-and-neutralization area (FNA). FNA activities are scheduled for September 10, following the first crew training on the spacecraft to occur on September 9th.

As of today, a test cycle of space hardware in the vacuum chamber using helium-air medium in the volumes under test remains an objective leak testing method under ground conditions ensuring a leak check for specified rigorous requirements.

The launch of Soyuz МС-02 carrying the next long-duration Expedition crew to the International Space Station is scheduled for September 23, 2016 from Baikonur cosmodrome. The prime ISS 49/50 crew consists of ROSCOSMOS cosmonauts Sergei RYZHIKOV and Andrei BORISNEKO, as well as NASA astronaut Shane KIMBROUGH.

Unique vacuum facility 17T523M with a volume of 1515 cubic meters was produced on the basis of vacuum chamber 17T523, which was designed for leak tests of large-size compartments, pneumatic hydraulic systems of Buran orbital vehicles. Owing to its new configuration the facility could be used for testing of large-size space hardware. A large variety of articles were successfully tested in vacuum chamber 17T523M, including spacecraft Soyuz, Progress, core module of the ISS Russian Segment Zvezda, modules Pirs and Poisk, communication satellites Yamal and others. Following the major reconstruction completed in 2016, the obsolete facility equipment and assemblies were replaced with the state-of-the-art ones. Modern vacuum pumps, seals, cooling system components were installed, the facility analog control unit was replaced with the electronic one. The camera body and cradle structure for articles loading were subject to renovation procedures.

The Soyuz MS-02 vehicle crews arrived at the Baikonur Cosmodrome
September 8, 2016

Today on September 8, the prime and the backup crewmembers of the Soyuz MS-02 new series manned transport vehicle (MTV) arrived at the Baikonur Cosmodrome to pass the final prelaunch processing phases.

The prime crew consists of the ROSCOSMOS cosmonauts Sergei RYZHIKOV and Andrei BORISENKO and also NASA astronaut Robert Shane KIMBROUGH. Their backups are the Roscosmos cosmonauts Aleksandr MISURKIN and Nikolai TIKHONOV, NASA astronaut Mark VANDE HEI.

At the Baikonur the cosmonauts and the astronauts will try on the Sokol-KV suits, take their places in the vehicle, get acquainted with onboard documentation and carry out a number of the onboard systems tests. During the final sessions at the Cosmodrome the following has been also planned: training in manual berthing of the vehicle to the ISS, control of the equipment kits, the forthcoming ballistic operations training and other preparatory procedures.

The launch of the Soyuz MS-02 MTV with the crew of the next long-duration Expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) is scheduled on September 23, 2016 from Site No. 31 of the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The Soyuz MS manned transport vehicle developed and produced by RSC Energia is designed to deliver the crews of up to three persons and accompanying cargo to the International Space Station (ISS) and also return them to Earth. During its stay on the ISS the vehicle also performs functions of a rescue vehicle and is maintained in constant readiness for the crew urgent descent to Earth.

The new modification vehicles Progress MS and Soyuz MS are developed as a result of deep modernization of the Progress M and Soyuz TMA vehicles. Onboard command radio system Kvant-V is replaced by a single command and telemetry system with an additional telemetry channel. This new command radio link provides the signal reception via relay satellites Luch-5; due to this fact the radio visibility zones of the vehicles are significantly increased – up to 70% of the orbit duration. The vehicles are equipped with rendezvous and docking system Kurs-NA which is an up-to-date onboard radio system. As compared with more earlier version Kurs A, it has the improved weight-dimension characteristics and allows to remove one of three radio antennas from the vehicle equipment. Instead of analog television system Klest, the digital television system is used onboard the vehicles; it allows to maintain communication between the vehicle and the Station by means of board-to-board radio link. The onboard equipment of the Soyuz MS and Progress MS modification vehicles instead of the equipment removed from production also has a new digital standby circuit control unit developed by RSC Energia, upgraded angular rate sensor unit ARSU-3A and LED lamp SFOK. Due to the use of new ground and onboard radio systems it was possible to use up-to-date data transmission protocols, resulting in improved stability of the vehicle control system.

MEDIA ADVISORY M16-109

NASA Television to Air Launch of Next International Space Station Crew

Three crew members headed to the International Space Station are scheduled to launch on Friday, Sept. 23. Live launch coverage will begin at 1:15 p.m. EDT on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough, along with cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Andrey Borisenko of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, will launch at 2:16 p.m. from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (12:16 a.m. Sept. 24, Baikonur time). The Expedition 49/50 crew will spend approximately five months together aboard the orbital complex before returning to Earth in late February.

Between launch and docking to the space station, the trio will spend two days in the Soyuz MS-02 testing upgrades to the spacecraft’s various systems. The team will dock to the space station’s Poisk module at 3:32 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25. NASA TV coverage of the docking will begin at 2:45 p.m.

Hatches between the Soyuz and station will open at approximately 6:10 p.m. Sunday, and NASA TV coverage of hatch opening and welcoming ceremonies will begin at 5:45 p.m. The arriving crew will be welcomed by Expedition 49 Commander Anatoly Ivanishin of Roscosmos and Flight Engineers Kate Rubins of NASA and Takuya Onishi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, who have been on the station since July.

The soon-to-be six crew members of Expedition 49 will continue work on hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science aboard humanity’s only microgravity laboratory.
