Did Apollo use a skip reentry?
« on: 06/16/2008 03:19 pm »
Hello.

I've read in various places that a "skip" reentry was an option for Apollo, but wasn't used. But last night when I was watching Discovery's "When we left earth" one of the Astronauts (I forgot who) described a skipping reentry.

Now I'm confused. Was a skipping reentry used for Apollo?

Thanks
- Jason

The description wasn't so much of a skip reentry as much as it was about how the profile used the command module's lift to control heat rate. The skip reentry profile is a much more brutal affair, and was used on Zond to allow a landing at the higher latitudes required to land in the Soviet Union.
