Today it is 50 years since the Soviet Union launched the Venera 4 spacecraft towards Venus.

On October 18, 1967 it became the first spacecraft to return in situ data as it parachuted through the atmoshere of Venus before the atmospheric pressure crushed the descent module.

It is entirely possible that the Venera 4 lander's battery ran out before it was breached.
