sammie - 26/6/2007  4:43 PM  Nope these are specs for the Proton M 'Enhanced'. It will be the first flight of this version which should become the standard over the next years. The new 'enhanced' version should lift 6.3 tonnes to GTO, quite an upgrade from earlier versions

What is the quoted capability for the earlier version of Proton-M? In other words, what is the additional capability provided by these modifications?

Afternoon all,

For Mir the Proton-K featured
the RD-253 engines enhanced to 106½%
and
the RD-0210/0211 by 101½%

then the RD-253 were enhanced to 102% as standard on Proton-K

A new engine was introduced, the RD-275 enhanaced by 107%

For use in the Proton-M the RD-275 were enhanced by 102% with the goal of acheving 105% upgrade in the future (that is 112% above the original thrust levels of the RD-253).
The RD-0210/0211 by 105%.

PanAmSat-8 satellite in November 4, 1998 introduced these engines and I guess Zarya?.

Measat-3 also featured some carbon composite elemets on stage 2.

Russian Proton M Booster Rocket With DIRECTV 10 Satellite Installed on Baikonur Launch Pad
03.07.2007
http://www.khrunichev.ru/khrunichev_eng/live/full_rel.asp?id=14810

"The operation readiness review was held yesterday at Baikonur with participating of all the representatives of Russian and foreign entities involved in the Proton Breeze M DIRECTV 10 launch campaign. On the same day, the meeting was followed by Russian State Commission comprising Russian space officials, met at 6 p.m. to certify the readiness of the integrated space rocket Proton Breeze M with DIRECTV 10 to be rolled out from Assembly and Test Building to the launch pad. The Commission gave a go–ahead to the roll–out operations.

According to the launch schedule these operations began today at 06:30 a.m. (Baikonur local time). The rocket has already be erected vertically on the pad.

Within the following couple of days the Russian technical team and their colleges from Boeing (the manufacturer of DIRECTV10 spacecraft) will perform the joint operations with the rocket at the launch pad.

The State Commission will meet again on Friday, 6 July, at 10 p.m. (Baikonur local time) to certify the readiness of the Proton Breeze M vehicle and flight control team for the launch.

The launch is currently scheduled at 7:16 a.m. (local Baikonur time) on July 7, 9:16 p.m. Friday, July 6 (EDT).

DIRECTV 10 mission will be the debut of the Enhanced Proton Breeze M, which is capable of launching spacecraft over 6,000 kg into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

To lift DIRECTV 10 – the heaviest ever and most powerful DIRECTV’s satellite, having separated mass approximately 5,893 kg – Khrunichev (the manufacturer of Proton Breeze M launch vehicle) has designed and implemented a series of improvements to the Proton to maximize its rocket lift capacity. By 2009, these improvements will become the baseline configuration for all Proton rockets for both commercial launches and Russian government missions"

Excellent photos. Proton's a great looking vehicle. Pretty classy, having the priests come out and bless the flight, too.

In general, the first stage is undersized in comparison with the upper stage - Proton would be a lot more efficient vehicle if the first stage tanks were lengthened, so that the stage could burn for closer to 180 seconds than the current 130.

You see this on most Proton flights. But why is it? Most other commercial GTO LVs don't work like that? Is it the high inclination?

I would guess so.  Seems less than ideal to launch GEO sats from such a high latitude.

It is less ideal, but standard for GTO launches from Baikonur. I can only imagine that this long mission time is due to the weight of the spacecraft. A quick glance through a list of Skyrockets website show that standard payloads on the previous ProtonM/BreezeM missions weigh a little under 5 metric tonnes. While DirectTV10 weighs about 1 tonne more. I assume that even though the structural improvements, ILS will go for the most effecient mission profile, which is results in a longer mission.

I might have a go at a few screenshots early on, and then after launch (although I'll be testing some new video grab software around the time of launch itself).
