Revell 1/144 Boeing 747/Space Shuttle
« on: 03/04/2013 01:24 am »
The weather's finally warming up, and I've begun modeling again.  I broke out my 1/144 747/Shuttle kit and have started assembly.  Pictures to follow as I get more done.

I'm thinking I'll build the silver "ex-American" scheme of the early 80's as I have the decals for them from an older boxing, and it's my favorite SCA scheme.  And I'll build either the Enterprise, Columbia, or Challenger as they flew on the back of the SCA before it was repainted into white the first time.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

I've assembled the fuselage and elevators.  Lots of seams, will need to correct a little kink in the tail fin too.

I saw this model was released a few months ago and I was pretty excited.  But I could never find it.  They have it listed as part number: 80-4863. I could never find that online.  Thanks to your screen shot, I see the part number to look for is 04863.  I've now found it and ordered one.  Thanks!  Just don't tell my wife as I have another 1/144 shuttle stack still sitting in the box. :)

Don't worry, your secret is safe with me :)

I'm feeling under the weather but will get back to work soon with more work on the seams and the wing joins.

Thanks! I've finished the last coat of primer on the 747.  Next comes paint.

Working on the engines tonight.  They're pretty hard to do on this model, the way they're broken into pieces means lots of seams.

Ah, memories... I built this kit once or twice as a kid.

Bubbinski, are you rebuilding the attachment struts for the orbiter?  IIRC, the ones with the kit are pretty shapeless.  I know Muroc Models once had a set of replacements, but it's gone from their catalog now.

I'm sure there are good pics from the final ferry flights somewhere on this site.  It shouldn't be too hard to scratchbuild them with some Plastruct or Evergreen styrene tube.

I hadn't planned on using anything other than the kit parts.  Yeah they could be better, but scratchbuilding isn't quite a skill I've mastered yet.  At least not for bigger, more obvious (or load bearing) parts.

I got my first 747-shuttle kit when I was about, oh, 9 or 10 years old in the original boxing with the great silver bird and the Enterprise atop it.

Well done pimping the engines. It's very accurate looking now!

What color have you used for painting the engines? Is that airbrush?  :-\
Why do you use still black paining before aluminum coating? I think you had used a white primer coating already?

Thanks!

I used Alclad polished aluminum on the engines.

As for the 747 the gray coat was primer to cover up seams. Black undercoat makes Alclad look shinier when I spray over it.

Alclad is a lacquer that is best used airbrushed in thin coats over primed and smooth surfaces.  Great for bare metal finishes, there are a number of shades ranging from steel to aluminum to gunmetal.

I did lots of painting work on the 747 and gluing on Enterprise today.  Here's a pic of the 747 after I masked off the polished aluminum and sprayed Tamiya Bare Metal Silver to cover the leading edges.  (I also painted the rest of the bird to seal the tape edges before painting Tamiya gray primer and later Aircraft Gray.  Now my fuselage painting is done and tomorrow I'll work on the wings.).

And the Enterprise got a lot of work done on her too.

Hi,
great shots of your SCA 747 with the Enterprise, but one thing I noticed on your 747. The blue-white-red decal stripes on the bow lace something looks wrinkled, or is that deceptive?   :-\ Have you used no decal softener?

Yes, there are wrinkles on the nose.  I tried using Micro Sol on them but it didn't quite work out.  I'm trying to figure out a solution.  May need to scrape the decals off and try painting on the colors.  We'll see.

Hi!
Veeery nice work!   :D

I've got one, too.
But this one's a regular decal. As you can see, I've assembled the shuttle with gears, so I can show it without the SCA.

Anyway, did you notice the remaining parts? The last photo.
Did any of you run into them, aswell?
What's up with those? I mean, I can imagine it's about the opened shuttle version, but why haven't I got any instructions on that? Can you guys help?
Nor were there any instr. on building the shuttle with gears. I had to imagine that also.

Waiting for a reply.
Thanks a million!

P.S.: It's not 100% ready!

Hi Ktulu,

these are components for the Payload bay of the orbiter.

BTW, the configuration of the model is however different from Kit to Kit,  what kind of Kit did you use for building the shuttle orbiter?

Maybe I can help you, I have here a PDF construction manual of the Revell Kit 4911: Space Shuttle Launch Tower with Space shuttle, External tank and Solid rocket boosters. You'll find on pages 19-21 drawings for the installation of the payload bay equipment.

I also have found the PDF construction manual of the Revell Kit 747 SCA & Space Shuttle, which is unfortunately very poor for building the orbiter.

Well, thanks especially for the first one. I'll try to open the shuttle (now, as it is already glued together), and fit the parts in the payload bay.
Hope I won't tear things up...

The second manual is the one I used to build it. Ich habe den Kit aus Innsbruck gekauft, während eines Urlaubs.

This is my collection (10 days from now I'll get back perhaps with my father's collection, which is 1:100):

Thanks Ktulu and roma847.

The parts in the last picture are for the Spacelab module in the payload bay.  You don't need them for the 747/shuttle display unless you want to open the payload bay doors.

Alternatively you could build the Spacelab module and put it in another shuttle if you want to build another model that would be on a stand by itself to simulate being in space.

Now hanging in my office:

Some comments:
* Thanks to Bubbinski for advice.

* Making models is much easier now than it was three decades ago.  Heck, I was even able to properly apply decals, something that was always a huge frustration as a kid.

* The mounts for putting the shuttle on top of the SCA are worthless in this kit.

I flew on SOFIA four times.

Thanks Roma!  If you build a 1/72 stack in the future I look forward to seeing the result. :-)
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Another "I haven't done this for 30 years" question.  For those who have built shuttle stacks, what's your advice on the timing of painting parts vs. gluing parts (in other words, which parts should I paint before gluing, and which should wait?).
I flew on SOFIA four times.

I'd glue most parts first.  Assemble the orbiter, fuel tank, SRB's.  Then fill in seams and spray with primer.  Leave small assemblies like engine bells for last, even after the decals.  (Paint engine bells separately).

Thanks Mike!

Here's the 747/shuttle and the 1/72 shuttle stack finished in December 2010.

Thanks for posting the picture.  You did a great job.

Mike.

Thanks!  There are some more pictures of it in the original space modeling thread here, I'd need to dig up the thread and pages.  That thing took 9 months to do off and on and when I'm done with my 72nd Saturn I'll try to put the things side by side (no guarantees).

Great build!  I am glad that Revell Germany has reissued this kit.  I also found some after market decals and attachment struts for the kit.  I wish the was a 1/144 747SP so I could build SOFIA!
