History of Titan III
« on: 03/05/2009 01:00 pm »
Here is an official USAF history of the Titan III rocket up to 1963.  It is in two parts.

Very interesting documents. Nice they have a Titan-III history long before the first flight.

I enjoy the Thor documents too.

Thanks for all the documents you have uploaded recently...........

You're welcome.  I have a high-speed scanner at work, so the scanning is relatively easy.

Have recently started sorting through the mess of files that I have (I let my filing get out of control) and so when I find something interesting, I bring it and scan it.  I'll have a few more interesting things next week.

VERY interesting, because it's not as dry as most officially-sanctioned histories.

Has anyone ever made a concerted effort to collect Titan launch
pics a la Peter Hunter's mighty Atlas and Thor/Delta collections?  There are many I have never seen: the Helios launches, for example.  Hell, I've never even seen a good MOL launch that hadn't had the hell cropped out of it :(

There are a bunch of nice Titan launch images at this link, including several Titan III launches associated with MOL development.

Peter Hunter put out 1 each Atlas in the 20th Century and 1 Thor-Delta 1957-2004 CD/DVD of all flown vehicles except where missing pics could  not be located. The flight history is sorted 4 ways: chronologically, by vehicle type, by payload and by launch site. Some unique photos and data are part of these must have collections. Perhaps someone will volunteer to provide copies upon request. Although Thor-Delta is the title of one CD it includes all Thors.

1st left is Titan I R&D 1960 or 1961
next is Titan II R&D    1962 or 1963 or 1964 has belly bands so most
                                                            likely 1962
next is Titan 3C (might be 34D with 5-1/2 segments)

Is this any help?

No.  I talked to Peter about this and he thought that a Titan collection would be difficult to assemble.  In both the case of the Atlas and Thor collections, he had access to a very large collection of photos that a contractor made available to him.  Peter's a 747 pilot for Qantas and used to spend his layover days at LAX by driving down to San Diego and scanning photos.  Lots of work, but he assembled a great resource.  I used it for developing an article on the Thor "heavy ferret" launches during the 1960s into the early 1970s.  I noticed several variations in the payload shrouds that indicated payload variations.

There is apparently no single collection of Titan photos that we know of.  Also, the contractor is not as open as for the Atlas and Thor.  And there's nobody to assemble it.  Peter did it because he had free time and he had a trainspotter's obsession.  You'd have to find somebody to be just as obsessive about the Titan.

Yes thank you.  I have had this poster above the headboard of my bed for 15 years, just never got to figure out what each one was.

Yes, the effort required to assemble such good selections cannot be underestimated.  He has done us all an enormous service.  Mind you, it helps when you turn up at an aerospace company saying you fly 747's!  You and I would be turned away at the door...
Now we need launches like TacSat, Sphinx and DODGE.
P.S: Thanks for the Helios pics :)

There was only one MOL related launch: C-9, November 1966. You could count other development launched MOL related, but this would be a stretch quite a bit.
