1/144th Scale Realspace Models Delta IVH EFT-1

I just received a new kit in the mail. Realspace Model's Delta IVH with the EFT-1 on top. It has resin engines, booster nose cones, Delta IV core upperstage and EFT-1 shroud. The main rocket bodies are plastic tubes and uses styrene rod and half-rounds for detail. There is also 4 resin spruce-blocks with detail parts and the nozzles for the escape tower. A Delta triangle and flag decals are included.

I laid the kits parts out and tape them together to get an idea of how big the model will be. I also laid it beside my Falcon 9 to get a size comparison.

I started work of the Delta IV. First, gluing the engines to the bases of the rockets. I then drilled out one of the sets and and a wood plague to make the base and mount. Then, I started on the plumbing and cut out the tiny resin pipe details and built the first of the three fuel lines.

Attached one engine assembly to the first body tube. There is a wrap around template used to mark the locations on each Delta IV body. I made 3 copies in my printer, just in case and wrapped and marked the first tube. I went a step further and added graphic tape to represent the interstage edges. The added the fuel line and conduit on the first booster rocket. I think I will leave the nosecone off until painting is done, just to have one less masking job.

Glad to see this build-up, I've been wanting a DIV-H and might get this one.
Where'd you get the cute little EFT-1 with upper stage I see there in the background?

The upperstage was scratch build using plastic tubes and a Plastuct cone. I tried to make it 1/144th scale, but the available parts made it a little bigger. The adapter was taken from an extra Saturn V I had parts from.

OK, I have been busy doing each core stage one day at a time for the last couple days, and have the basics of them done. I also finished the upper-stage with the LES and its 4 little engines. Then, I drilled out the attachment points and inserted some very stiff wire that should hold the stages secure. There are no details pieces includes for the actual attachment point and hardware, so it will have to be scratch-built. I will do that after painting. I plan to paint each core separately. It looks great and lines up nice and straight when I put it on the base.

And after looking at these pictures of the upper attachments and a few other pictures, it is clear there is a gap between each core, so I will have to keep that in mind.

Painted the entire rocket gloss white. I still need to hit the left nosecone with a bit of sandpaper. Then it will be time to paint the brown/orange. I have not glued any of the boosters or upperstage together yet, just for ease of painting.

My biggest problem will be trying to match that orange-brown color. I assume it is like the ET tank foam and actually changes color over time.

Yep, this really is a tricky problem to mix the right color.
Therefore you have to evaluate a lot of photos, because the color tones often appear very different and very much depend on the lighting conditions and aging.
Right, this is a similar problem with the ET and one is still to come ...

I have given the CBCs a coat of Terracotta Orange. After that, I will overspray with desert tan to get the color I want.

Thanks! I have come up with an idea that may get a better color and the texture of the tank.....just using a brush to paint the tanks the color I mixed. Hopefully, I can get the horizontal texture with a brush.
Time for a Hobbytown roadtrip!
