I've gotten fuzzy on the details again, or exactly what changes have happened...is this launch powered by a refurbished NK-33 engine?  Or is the first stage already using an RD-193?

And are they really trying to call it the Soyuz-1?  Seems like that would be hard to pull off since it follows -2.1a, -2.1b.  Maybe they should tack on digits, and make it the -2.1.3a.  :)

Or take a page from Apple, and just call it "Soyuz" and let the poor confused masses struggle to come up with identification schemes, like "2013 edition" or codename "Kuznetsov's Revenge" or "Uni-Core."

It uses refurbished NK-33.

The name of this launcher is Soyuz-2.1v. "V" is the third letter in Cyrillic alphabet, so it is quite logical since this launcher is the thirs version of the Soyuz-2.1.

I'm looking at this as a new rocket, since it uses a new first stage and first stage propulsion system.  It surely isn't an R-7.  It is "Soyuz" only in the same sense that "Atlas 5" claims a link to the original "Atlas", despite using a completely different booster stage in place of the part that was originally called "Atlas".

I'm wavering on this one. I go with the core stage, and the core stage has some commonalities. New engine, true,
but the basic dimensions are essentially the same as the R-7 Blok A.  I didn't count an RD-180-engined Atlas 3 as a
new family despite its new propulsion system, and I didn't consider the TR-201-powered Delta second stage
as a different stage family from the AJ-10-118 powered versions. So I'm leaning towards keeping the Soyuz-2-1V launches
in my 'R-7' family table.

but the basic dimensions are essentially the same as the R-7 Blok A.
Good point about Atlas III.  That may be the proper analogy.  In addition, Soyuz 2-1v, like Atlas III, still uses the same launch pads (with modifications) as the previous variants.

That's like saying all aircraft that use the same runway are Boeing 7x7s! :-) The 2.1v core is quite different from the R-7 core (aside from the attach points), so along with the "new" engine, I consider it to be a new launch vehicle as well.

Thor changed shape and engines, and electronics?

And TsSKB Progress state 80% commonality with the central blok-A; see L2 (thanks to Mr. Pillet).

Should these discussions be in the generic Soyuz-2-1V thread?

I'm looking at this as a new rocket, since it uses a new first stage and first stage propulsion system.  It surely isn't an R-7.  It is "Soyuz" only in the same sense that "Atlas 5" claims a link to the original "Atlas", despite using a completely different booster stage in place of the part that was originally called "Atlas".

I am also not yet decided about this issue. Similar to the Atlas family including the Atlas III and the Thor family also including the Deltas up to version III, i am also leaning to classify it within the R-7 family.

Ariane is a different case, as the Ariane-5 rocket (as built) has practically nothing in common with the Ariane-1 to-4 series. Therfore i classify these as two families.

The rocket itself is not so top secret; plenty of evidence exists from Russian Government and TsSKB-Progress procurements, NOTAMS… So then the payload, does it reflect the shape and size of a future Russian Military satellite?

Here's a Russian news report about the upcoming launch today, with the rocket on the launch pad: http://www.vesti.ru/videos?vid=563694 (http://www.vesti.ru/videos?vid=563694)

Interestingly it claims a launch time of 10:30 UTC...... seeing that the NOTAMs that are still in effect are of the 12:00-13:00 UTC time range, I think the correct launch time is still 12:30 UTC.

Oh and the air space closures seems to indicate a target orbit inclination of 82 degrees.....  ::)

The Soyuz 2-1v first stage looks to be roughly the same length as the Antares first stage, but is only 2.66/2.95 meters diameter compared to 3.9 meter diameter Antares.  Also, the single NK-33A engine thrust is substantially augmented by the thrust produced by the four-nozzle steering engine, so it is not a 50% less thrust situation.

As I understand it, engine gimbal and electronics are the special sauce Aerojet adds to make an AJ-26 out of an NK-33.  So, yes.  :)

Why do they need a steering engine? Does the NK-33 not gimbal but AJ-26 does?

The NK-33 does not gimbal as produced in 1973.

Then how was the N1 supposed to maneuver?  ???

Differential throttling, presumably. (Although the N1 never flew with NK-33)

According to my informations, launch scrub was due to failure of a valve in engine NK-33A. Probably the valve was frozen due to propellant drain.

From reading NK, it looks like this whole project is being done by young generation of designers who didn't have much in a way of experience, so they're learning in the process. In that case, it's totally expected that there will be delays, verifications and another verifications after first ones.

Apparently if the crew decided to de-tank then this rocket would need to be sent back to the factory for refurbishment - ironic since this rocket was once originally slated to be the second one to fly....

(and back in 2006 the one used in the MetOp-A launch very nearly requires such refurbishment due to repeat scrubs)

This is presumably the 14S54 third stage (is that the right designation? The Blok-I, anyway).
Transfer orbit apogee was at 1325 UTC over the Antarctic; presumably the Volga burn began around that time.

That would be the "second stage" for this LV.

Soyuz-2.1v is a two stages launcher :

It carries also an upper stage :

- Volga (14S46)

Yes, second stage. I meant to say second stage. Hard habit to break, thinking of the Blok I as third stage all these years!

I've also seen '132KS' for the first stage? (maybe from Anatoly Zak?)

By the way it looks like catalog 39490 to 39494 have been reserved for 2013-78A to 78E, which
will be Aist, two spheres, the Blok I stage, and the Volga stage with attached adapter.

Yep.

After 50 years, they have re-invented the R-9. Edit: R-9 was an early ICBM with RD-111 as the first stage engine and RD-110 as the second stage engine, basically an analog of Titan I, which makes this Soyuz also an analog of Titan I.

BTW, it should be noted that the first stage engines are NK-33, not AJ-26. They come directly from Samara.

NO they are NK-33A (Modernized NK-33 updated with 21st century Engine controller and other new 21st Century systems installed to complete the creation of modernized NK-33 which is realized into the world as NK-33A) which Comes via Samara.

Congratulations!

Btw, is this rocket meant to launch with 4 boosters as well in the future? I seem to recall seeing concept images of a heavy Soyuz launcher with the core powered by NK-33. It would be a neat evolution of the current Soyuz launcher to be able to launch with 0, 2, or 4 boosters depending on what performance is needed.

That would be the Soyuz 2.3 and Soyuz 3 variants.  Other notional plans included a cryogenic upper stage.   It's not clear if it will ever be developed or replaced with a totally new launch vehicle family.  I think the latter is more likely.

4  (four) RD-120.10F engines   might still be the next upgrade path (a good one).  They have serial production in the Ukraine.  Might be a good tradeoff for cash.
or a brand new RD-0155 engine (not much info available on this engine)

This is the first Soviet/Russian launch vehicle to have a single single-chamber liquid-propulsion main engine on the first stage (albeit with thrusters surrounding it).

No, the Shtil had also the same configuration.

You're right - I had completely forgotten about them.   Thank you.

Still 5 Objects with refreshed TLEs to-day, makes me wonder if Volga was really deorbited...

I was just about to post the same comment!  Assuming the TLEs are accurate, another possibility is that
that big cylindrical adapter was jettisoned from Volga as a payload separation test

The fifth object may be the 188KS adapter/conical cap on top of the payload "can".

Is there any reason to think that the 188KS would have separated from the can?
(obviously possible, but I would have thought more likely the whole can would separate
from Volga, as a simulation of normal payload deploy...)

i understand that at one time there were plans to simulate the operations of deploying a secondary payload from within the the payload dispenser thus 188KS would have needed to be jettisoned first. ultimately no secondary payloads were launched.

Ah, interesting. Then that's a plausible explanation.

Radar cross sections for the 5 in orbit objects have now been published:
Object A 10.316 m² (confirmed as 2nd stage)
Object B 0.634 m² (my guess: SKRL-756 #1)
Object C 0.137 m² (my guess: Adaptor 188 KS)
Object D 0.2693 m² (my guess: AIST)
Object E 0.630 m² (my guess: SKRL-756 #2)

I would guess that the big adapter that holds the satellite to Volga is still attached to Volga, to generate a radar cross section of 10 m3.

No, Volga and the attached "big adapter" re-entered over the South Pacific soon after separation of the "payloads".
The radar cross section of 10 m² is reflected by Soyuz second stage still in orbit (Object A)

SpaceTrack has now allocated names to Objects A to D which raise some questions and may change again.. ???

anik, something is unclear to me.

If I understand correctly this discussion, the first flight was made with 14A15 N°2Л.

http://novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/forum/forum13/topic9953/?PAGEN_1=184

But later, you wrote that first flight was with 14А15 №2Л...

What happened with 2Л ?

So it means that it was 14А15 №78031001.

This is due to 1st stage  001 being used either in entirety or for parts  after the first stage GTA failure and explosion on the the stand because of stands emergency system system and some fuel supply piping failing during the GTA NK-33A engine AVD and abort sequence.
