Twenty-eighth expedition to the ISS quits

13.09.2011

On board the International Space Station crew completes work twenty-eighth long expedition.

The commander of the ISS-28 Andrei Borisenko (Russia), ISS-28 Samokutyaev Alexander (Russia) and Ronald Garan (U.S.) are preparing to return to Earth aboard the "Soyuz TMA-21", which they, in April of this year, arrived at the station.

In lander spacecraft astronauts are placed subject to the return of equipment, including pencil cases with the results of scientific experiments.

Today, astronauts together with specialists from the Russian Mission Control Center will hold a training ship on the descent from orbit.

Andrei Borisenko tomorrow and Sergei Volkov, who will continue the flight to the ISS-29, will sign a deed of change in the Russian segment of the station.
On the night of September 15 will be an official ceremony of handing over command of the entire plant.

The next commander of her will be American astronaut Michael Fossum, and the number will change with the ISS Expedition-28 ISS-29.  Together with Volkov and flight Fossum at the station will continue to Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa.

Undocking of "Soyuz TMA-21" with the station is scheduled for September 16 at 4:00 38 am Moscow time (00:38 GMT).

According to preliminary data, the landing capsule of "Soyuz TMA-21" is expected in 08 hours 00 minutes (04:00 GMT) at 149 kilometers southeast of the town of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.

From ISS On-Orbit Status Report for 15/09/2011.

Preparations for tonight’s undocking will pick up momentum at ~8:00 PM GMT, with the activation of the Soyuz spacecraft by Samokutyayev & Borisenko who will also perform checkouts and conduct communications tests from the Soyuz TMA-21/26S to RGS (Russian Groundsite) via VHF (Very High Frequency).

Russian thrusters will be disabled from ~9:00 PM-10:40 PM GMT due to load constraints for the removal, by Sasha & Andrey, of the QD (Quick Disconnect) screw clamps (BZV) of the docking & internal transfer mechanism (SSVP) which rigidized the joint at the MRM-2 Zenith port (9:00 PM-9:20 PM GMT).

After Crew Farewell, Andrey, Ron & Sasha will enter the Soyuz at ~9:20 PM-9:40 PM GMT, covered by live PAO TV.

Next, with the Soyuz spacecraft’s gas analyzer (GA) running, Samokutyayev inside MRM-2 and Volkov outside close MRM-2 & Soyuz hatches. The departing Soyuz crew then starts the standard one-hour leak check on the Soyuz-to-Poisk vestibule.

After attitude control authority handover to the RS MCS (Russian Segment Motion Control System) at ~11:45 PM GMT, the ISS will maneuver to undock attitude. The returning crew will then perform Sokol suit leak checks and depressurize the BO Orbital Module by 150 mmHg for leak checking the SA-BO hatch. Next, they will don their Kentavr g-suits, biomed belts and Sokol space suits.

ISS goes into Free Drift at 12:34 AM-12:39 AM GMT for MRM-2 hooks opening and Soyuz undocking at 12:38 AM GMT. Attitude control returns to US Momentum Management with CMGs (Control Moment Gyros) at ~1:30 AM GMT.

When hooks have opened and 26S has been pushed out by spring force (delta-V ~0.12 m/s) with Soyuz CDR Alex Samokutyayev at the controls, the automated first separation burn of 15 sec duration (~0.55 m/s) is performed at 12:41 AM GMT with two DPO-B1 thrusters. Later, ISS will return to duty attitude (LVLH / Local Vertical Local Horizontal) at 12:46 AM GMT.

26S Descent Timeline Overview:
If everything proceeds nominally, the return to Earth of the Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft tonight will proceed along the following approximate event sequence (all times GMT):
• Orbital (local) Sunset --- 1:23 AM
• Deorbit Burn start (delta-V 115.2 m/sec) --- 3:05:27 AM
• Deorbit Burn complete --- 3:09:47 AM
• Orbital (local) Sunrise --- 3:26 AM
• Trimodule Separation (~140 km alt) --- 3:33:24 AM
• Atmospheric entry (99.1 km alt, with ~170 m/sec) --- 3:36:43 AM
• Entry Guidance start (81.1 km alt) --- 3:38:20 AM
• Maximum G-load (38.9 km alt) --- 3:43:01 AM
• Parachute deploy command (10.8 km alt) --- 3:45:20 AM
• 26S Landing (DO1) --- 4:00:22 AM GMT, 07:00:22 AM Moscow DMT (09/16), 10:00:22 AM local Kazakhstan (loc. 47deg 16min N, 69deg 35min E)

[Note: Kazakhstan time = GMT+6h, = EDT+10h. Moscow DMT = EDT+7h.]

Russian standard is to request constant updates from the crew for all aspects of flight--completely opposite to the far less intrusive US standard...

love the Russian graphic of module re-entry on the upper left-but  I don't think it's driven by actual data.  Wonder if the station can see the re-entry?

Sounds like the beacon is transmitting

And as noted above, that does look like live video in the top right, so this won't of been a ballistic entry.

I don't think that's live video, Rob Navias would probably highlight if it was.  He's only mentioned that recovery crews have the soyuz in sight.

I don't know, it does seem to be shaking and focusing in and out

I hope it isn't as it's been visible a good 10 minutes and we've seen none of it properly.  :(

You're right, that was a recording, as it was the one where the cameraman tried to rush from behind his van at the last minute! :)

VV officer reporting plane has contact with Soyuz and talking to the crew - who report they are in good shape.

Phew. Absolutely HATE all those calls going up to the crew and no response, and I don't need to explain why.

This didn’t add to any confidence in the Soyuz.   What will this be called, a first time Communication Failure with Soyuz?

RELEASE: 11-303

SPACE STATION TRIO LANDS SAFELY IN KAZAKHSTAN

HOUSTON -- Three International Space Station crew members safely
returned to Earth Friday, Sept. 16, wrapping up a six-month mission
of research and exploration.

NASA's Ron Garan, Expedition 28 commander Andrey Borisenko and flight
engineer Alexander Samokutyaev, both of the Russian Federal Space
Agency, landed their Soyuz spacecraft in Kazakhstan at midnight EDT
(10 a.m. in Kazakhstan). The trio, which arrived at the station on
April 6, had been scheduled to land on Sept. 8, but that was
postponed because of the Aug. 24 loss of the Progress 44 cargo ship.

Before leaving the station, Borisenko handed over command to NASA's
Mike Fossum, who leads Expedition 29. He and Flight Engineers Satoshi
Furukawa of Japan and Sergei Volkov of Russia are conducting research
and maintenance aboard the station. The launch date for the remaining
Expedition 29 crew members, NASA's Dan Burbank, and Russia's Anatoly
Ivanishin and Anton Shkaplerov, is under review.

Fossum is blogging about his experiences aboard the space station at:

MEDIA ADVISORY: M11-196

NASA ASTRONAUT RON GARAN AVAILABLE FOR MEDIA INTERVIEWS

HOUSTON -- NASA astronaut Ron Garan will be available for live
satellite interviews one week after returning to Earth from 6 to 7:30
a.m. CDT on Thursday, Sept. 22.

Garan completed 164 days in space as a member of the Expedition 27 and
28 crews aboard the International Space Station. The mission included
the last space shuttle visit to the station.

To arrange an interview, news media representatives must contact Derek
Sollosi at 281-792-7515 or by email at [email protected] by 2
p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Garan and his crewmates, Expedition 28 Commander Andrey Borisenko and
Flight Engineer Alexander Samokutyaev, both of the Russian Federal
Space Agency, landed in their Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft in Kazakhstan
Thursday, Sept. 15 at 11 p.m.

While aboard the station, they continued work on a variety of
microgravity experiments and received provisions from two shuttle
missions in order to ensure the orbiting outpost has enough supplies
and spare parts until new commercial resupply spacecraft are ready to
join a suite of international cargo delivery vehicles.

Garan is a graduate of the State University of New York College at
Oneonta, and he received a master's degree in aeronautical science
from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. He flew on one
shuttle mission, STS-124 in 2008.

Garan will appear on NASA Television's Live Interview Media Outlet
channel. The channel is a digital satellite C-band downlink by uplink
provider Americom.

It is on satellite AMC 3, transponder 9C, located at 87 degrees west,
downlink frequency 3865.5 MHz based on a standard C-band, horizontal
downlink polarity. FEC is 3/4, data rate is 6.0 Mbps, symbol rate is
4.3404 Msps, transmission DVB-S, 4:2:0.

The interviews and preceding b-roll from 5:30 to 6 a.m. also will air
live on NASA TV. For NASA TV streaming video, downlink and scheduling
information, visit:

Looking at the video of the landing moment - is it just me or did the solid braking rockets not fire too late? They fire just an instant before ground impact, it seems. I seem to recall them firing a bit earlier in other landings videos I have seen.

Was there any problem with Samokutyayev? He seems to be in bab shape comparing with the other two.
