Expedition 20 commander Gennadiy Padalka and flight engineer-1 Michael Barratt will perform Russian spacewalk (VKD-22) in new Orlan-MK spacesuits from Pirs airlock on June 5.

Quote from http://www.nasa.gov/directorates/somd/reports/iss_reports/

"In preparation for the first Russian Orlan EVA-22 on 6/5, CDR Padalka & FE-1 Barratt had two hours set aside for studying uplinked material on the EVA timeline plus hardware setup & bundling for the spacewalk.
[EVA-22 is scheduled to start at 2:45am EDT (06:45 UTC - anik) for an approximate duration of 5h 32m. Its three main objectives are:
1. Installing & connecting KURS-P system antennas (4AO-VKA, AR-VKA and 2AR-VKA - anik) on the SM,
2. Photographing the installed antennas, and
3. Removing the Container III of the Biorisk-MSN experiment on the DC1.]"

Yes. I was told they will use Orlan-MK spacesuits #5 (Padalka) and #6 (Barratt). But I doubt and think that #4 will be used instead of #6.

I was wrong and should trust my sources. :)

MEDIA ADVISORY: M09-100

NASA SETS PREVIEW BRIEFING, TV SCHEDULE FOR STATION SPACEWALKS

HOUSTON -- Two residents of the International Space Station will
conduct a pair of spacewalks in the coming weeks to prepare the
Russian segment of the station for future assembly work. The
activities will be broadcast live on NASA Television and previewed in
a briefing originating from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston on
Thursday, June 4, at 8:30 a.m. CDT.

The briefing participants are:

- Courtenay McMillan, Expedition 20 lead flight director, Johnson
Space Center
- David Korth, Expedition 20 EVA flight director, Johnson Space Center

Expedition 20 Commander Gennady Padalka and Flight Engineer Mike
Barratt will don Russian spacesuits June 5 for a spacewalk out of the
Pirs docking compartment's airlock. NASA TV coverage of the spacewalk
will begin at 1:15 a.m. Barratt and Padalka are expected to exit the
airlock to begin their exterior work at 1:45 a.m. The spacewalk will
prepare Pirs for the arrival of a new Russian module called the
Mini-Research Module 2, or MRM2, which will be launched later this
year on a Russian booster. The MRM2 will serve as an additional
docking port for Russian vehicles. The spacewalk is planned to last
five and a half hours.

On June 10, Padalka and Barratt will again don Russian suits and
depressurize the transfer compartment between the Zvezda service
module and the Zarya module. They will perform a one-hour interior
spacewalk that will set the stage for the MRM2's launch and automated
linkup. Television of the internal spacewalk is not expected, but
NASA TV will broadcast live commentary beginning about 1:15 a.m. The
internal depressurization of the station's Russian transfer
compartment for Padalka and Barratt is expected to begin about 1:45
a.m.

For NASA Television downlink information, schedule information and
streaming video, visit:

Removing of third container of Biorisk-MSN equipment from Pirs airlock is deleted from list of spacewalk tasks due to request of experiment investigators.

From yesterdays ISS status report:

To configure the Progress M-02M/33P cargo ship, docked at the “Pirs” DC1 nadir port, for ground-commanded emergency undocking if it should become necessary during the use of the DC1 airlock for the EVA-22, Romanenko & Padalka –
Activated the Progress (i.e., SUBA/Onboard Equipment Control System & SOTR/Thermal Control System),
Removed the air heater/fan unit & air duct in the passageway,
Released the quick-release screw clamps which rigidize the docking joint (with RS/Russian Segment thrusters inhibited during the closing-up activities),
Took documentary video of the DC1/Progress interface prior to hatch closure and downlinked the video via Ku-band for ground inspection,
Closed the hatches, and
Performed the usual one-hour leak check on the vestibule between the DC1-SU & SU-33P hatches to test for hermeticity.

I assume an ermergency that would involve the need to undock the Progress at the DC1 would be something like the inability to repressurize the DC1 compartment. is this need to be able to undock automatically just so that it will be possible at all to undock the Progress or is it necessary to undock immediately during the spacewalk as part of an emergency response?

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html

"During the Russian spacewalk, Padalka and Barratt will prepare the Pirs docking compartment for the arrival of the Mini-Research Module 2, which will serve as an additional docking port for Russian vehicles. The spacewalkers will install a docking antenna to help guide the new module into place when it arrives at the station aboard an unpiloted Soyuz [MRM-2 arrives aboard Progress M-MIM2 cargo ship-module, which will be launched by Soyuz-U rocket - anik] in November.

Additionally, Padalka and Barratt will take photographs of the Strela-2, a manually-operated crane used during Russian spacewalks [they will take photographs of the installed antennas from cargo boom - anik], and retrieve a canister from the Biorisk space exposure experiment [this task is already removed - anik]. Flight Engineer Koichi Wakata will assist the spacewalkers from inside the Zvezda service module."

Is this need to be able to undock automatically just so that it will be possible at all to undock the Progress or is it necessary to undock immediately during the spacewalk as part of an emergency response?

The first, of course.

Thank you anik. I guess I just don't know what emergency steps would be involved if faced what this situation of an inability to repressurize.

Thank you anik. I guess I just don't know what emergency steps would be involved if faced what this situation of an inability to repressurize.
As I understand (from discussion on earlier spacewalks with Soyuz at the Pirs) the main concern is an event causing emergency evacuation of the ISS which might occur during an EVA from the Pirs airlock. The obvious example would be a major fire inside one of the ISS modules.

In such a case, the spacewalking astronauts would be required to enter their Soyuz capsule from outside hatch and evacuate the complex without the need to re-enter Pirs. This operation had been tested on an earlier spacewalk.

In such case, presumably Pirs would remain depressurized and thus there may be a need for Progress to be jettisoned automatically. The surprise is that such detailed procedures are needed for this operation, the typical Russian method is to command everything from the ground and use crew operation as a back-up method.

Oh I see now. Though in such a major upset the ability to undock Progress seems of lesser importance. Although on the other hand, any potential recovery/necessary deorbit would obviously involve a fresh vehicle that would need a free docking port, so I suppose it actually is quite important to manage these things.
Thanks for explanations.

I understand why Wakata have to be in the SM during the second spacewalk, so as not to be isolated from his rescue vehicle docked to SM aft, but that graffic makes it look like he is required to stay there during the first spacewalk also which I don't understand.
I didn't catch that anything were happening to the transfer compartment that would make it a no-go area during the first spacewalk?

IANAE

My understanding is that the transfer compartment is the backup airlock. If they can't repressurize Pirs then the spacewalkers will enter the transfer compartment and try to repress there.

The equipment lock in Quest serves a similar function.

Tasks for today, as said on the previous page, are:

- Installation of two sets of KURS-antennas for MRM2
- Installing and connecting the cables to these two anntenna sets.
- Taking pictures of the installed antennas.

Discussing CO2 readings from the Orlans. Seems to be a "CO2 level high" warning.

Same readings have been seen during the dry run a few days ago.

17 and 13 for Padalka and Barratt, respectively. Not sure what units.

Both report feeling fine, Barrett says he's very familiar with high CO2.

Both are still feeling great.

what is that sound? during NASA TV coverage?
Barratt (i think) asked about that, so it's on the com loop somewhere, not just an NASA TV artifact.

They've had some trouble with some warning messages (like the CO2 readings at the begining of the EVA and some temperatur readings during orbital night) but in general, yes, everything's working fine.

Confirming with MCC-M that they get the right handrails to attach the cabel. There are 8 different attachpoints along the way from the antenna kit to the SM connectors.

EVs in the process of installing the second antenna kit, cable routing and connecting will be next.

Antenna 4AO-VKA is installed, they do route and connect the first of two cables from this antenna.

Thanks again for posting all, I still can't view it on NASA tv.

This is amazing, just like all the other EVA's before! (but this one without the shuttle attached)

Suppose the ISS was the MTV.  Half way towards Mars MOI.  Need to fix a radiator or a solar panel... here it is... a possible scenario...  repair the MTV,

This is what ISS is for!!!  Work this out, if we ever want to travel further like to Mars.

After cleanup and taking some closeup pictures the two will head over to the Strela boom and use it to get Mike in a position where he can take pictues of the two antennas as well as the docking target installed during Russian EVA-20 by Expedition 17 last year.

Upd.: EVs moving towards the Strela now. Still on (or even a little bit ahead of) timeline.

Final tasks will be to remove to protective ring and then close the hatch.

Some talk about how comfortable the suits were during the EVA, Gennadys was great, Mikes had 1 centimeter to much arm-length.

Thank you, sir, for your reportage.  A new space suit is qualified and a trans-vehicle gets more support....  (an MTV could be very similar to ISS and require similar repair missions en route to Mars)

Thanks all...

As far as I understand it seems to be a sensor issue not an issue with the CO2 level itself.

I seem to recall there was mention that Pirs would eventually be discarded but from what I can find, it sounds like Pirs will remain in place allowing more Progress craft to dock there and help with roll control.

Is this the most up-to-date position?

Pirs will be eventually discarded, but just to free up the docking port for the russian laboratory, which isn't to arrive until late 2011. Don't know exactly how long in advance of the MLM launch the undocking of Pirs is scheduled.

This was the first ISS EVA that I completely missed,as I got the times wrong (12 hours wrong !) so I'm feeling pretty gutted, but the screen shots looked amazing,
Thanks guys,

Awesome coverage, thanks very much for providing it Carsten! Those RS helmetcam views from Strela are breathtaking, and quite rare! Hope they'll release the pictures Mike took.

One question for whoever may know: the press conference graphics show the docking cone as being installed in Zvezda forward, and being relocated in the nadir port. This cone doesn't appear in the final configuration, but obviously there must be something that closes the Zvezda-Zarya interface, at least for the internal EVA. I suppose they'll also want to be able to seal any given module, so for that they'll need some sort of hatch too. Are they just relocating the nadir cover to the forward interface?

Pirs will be eventually discarded, but just to free up the docking port for the russian laboratory, which isn't to arrive until late 2011. Don't know exactly how long in advance of the MLM launch the undocking of Pirs is scheduled.

Thanks very much. Difficult to keep track of all the movements sometimes.

Excellent article (and pictures) here (in Russian):

2 июня 2009 года 15:10 | Герман Петелин
Россия запускает космический «прикид»

   http://svpressa.ru/issue/news.php?id=9547

Thank you Jim!
From the article:
MK is the 5th generation of the Orlan spacesuit.
The main difference is the presence of a computer (hence "K" in "MK") which monitors 50 different parameters and alerts the spacewalker if necessary. The next generation will not only monitor these parameters but will also be able to automatically control them.

Also the article has an interesting comparion:
EMU: Weight 136Kg, Can be used for 180days.
Orlan-MK: Weight 120Kg, Can be used for 4 years (15 EVAs)

Russian EVA-22:June 5, 2009

Please take a look at this video.  Pause at 00:01

Could someone please explain to me why there are scuba divers apparently helping the astronauts do their stuff in space?

Observe the top left-hand corner monitor.  This was broadcast during the Russian EVA-22:June 5, 2009 , but no longer available on NASA's site (well, I haven't had any success in retrieving it as yet).

They could just be replaying some of the Russian Hydrolab training video for this EVA on the screen. There appears to be an Orlon suited figure at the far left, but the image is so small and resolution so low it's hard to tell for sure.

Just replays of the training ops when they trained to do this on the ground.

Many thanks for your replies.  Replaying training videos certainly seems to makes sense.  Would you happen to know whether this is standard practice for all procedures, or only done when a problem occurs?
