Currently the ISS is dependent on the shuttle for it's growth and repair, while it can survive without the shuttle many parts can only be changed with help of the shuttle i.e. control moment gyros and swaping out international payload racks.

How can the ISS have a long term future without the shuttle?

It'll be supplied by the Russians and other countries and then the US again with the CEV.

Of the re-supply vehicles currently in operation, Progress M1 or planned ATV and HTV only the HTV  is currently speced with a CBM (common berthing mechanism) need to transfer the larger payloads needed on the non-Russian side of the station. None of these three vehicles have the ability for down mass and apart from the Shuttle only the Soyuz can do this and the Soyuz and only deliver around 50Kg back to Earth.

With a lot of the equipment on the international/US side designed for servicing on Earth and no way to replace large damaged parts I feel uncomfortable with the claim from NASA that the international partners will pick up the slack, I just can't see how they are able to.

I'm wondering about the ATV. I think I'll have to look into that and set something up on the CEV thread as it seems to be a new thing.

Here is a request for opinions; do you think a private company will step up and request to buy the ISS just before it is scheduled to be decommisioned and crashed into the Pacific Ocean?

Not feasible.  It needs too much gov't support to operate

What will happen is the following:

1.  Science and full utilization will not be what was expected, promised or advertised.
2.  Russian transport to the ISS for American (and European, Japanese and Canadian crew, which we must pay for) will all of the sudden increase due to "unforseen increases in cost".
3.  Resupply of the station with only HTV, ATV and Progress and potentially a few other commercial carriers will not be able to meet the demand of a 6 person crew.  The crew will be incrementally decreased.
4.  Failures of hardware on ISS will not be able to be returned for failure analysis where any corrective actions could be taken with like spares on the ground.  Some failures will not have the ability to transport any spare ORU's to the Station further hindering its capability.
5.  Politicians will stand up and say this is a shame and tragedy.  That how we could let this happen is a failure and point to someone else that is to blame all the while they could have done something, and still could, but most likely will not because it would cost the equivalent of pennies that you would find in the cushion of your couch.
