The first launch of the heavy class rocket Angara-A5 is scheduled for December 25, the deputy general designer of the Khrunichev Space Center, Yuri Bakhvalov has told the media.

“We are planning to flight-test Angara-A5 in December. The preliminary launch date is December 25,” Bakhvalov said.

The rocket is to be launched form the northern space site Plesetsk.

“We still have some time to spare to eliminate glitches during pre-launch preparations, if any,” Bakhvalov said.

As for the light configuration of Angara - Angara-1.2pp, its first launch took place in July 2014. More flight-testing is due in 2016,”Bakhvalov said. “The rocket is to reach a low orbit,” he said.

As for the possibility of an intermediate launch of Angara Bakhvalov said that the development work was in the “initial phase.

Impressive.  Looks like what the Soyuz launcher should have already have evolved into by now.  I guess the olive-colored devices on each core are a propellant (kerosene) connection to the pad; where might the LOX connections be?

No clear indications of roll control thrusters on the core; perhaps the whole thing stages at the same time?

Over 24 metric tonnes to LEO?
Did I read that correctly at Wikipedia?

Mount a 3-seater Soyuz on top and it could be sent to the Moon.

the other connection is the silver circle that is roughly 90 degrees from the olive green connection. Each booster has four symmetrically spaced pyro-bolt hold hold down points for a total of 20.

Liftoff thrust of Angara 5 is similar to Proton, I am not sure how the vehicle can lift more than Proton, unless it is made out some very light materials, and has a really capable upper stage.

Burn time is much longer, specific impulse is higher (so weight to trust ratio is better).

The ISP of the RD-275 of the Proton fist stage is 316s vacuum and 285s sea level while the Angara's RD-191 is 337s/310s. The Angara-5 is also about 80 mt heavier. There may be other factors too.

Maybe different serial number and Briz-M version for Angara at Plesetsk?? that is my first guess, otherwise and dev version to test revisions. Not really sure. maybe Manik might have an idea.

I can confirm that this is the serial number of the Briz-M that will be used on this launch.

Has a "carwash" for Angara payloads been constructed yet?

Looking at the Angara Launch System Mission Planner’s Guide is says:-
Quote
- Area 35 (launch complex), for Breeze M filling and SC launch.

5.2.7  Integrated LV Handling at the Launch Complex
The following work is carried out during assembly of the Angara A3 integrated LV:
- Transportation of the integrated LV to the fuel filling station, with thermal control;
- Filling Breeze M with propellants;
- Transportation of the integrated LV to the launch complex, with thermal control;

Burn time is much longer, specific impulse is higher (so weight to trust ratio is better).

Which then begs the question as to why the performance is so much higher than Zenit, which uses comparable engines, in terms of ISP, and which has a kind of similar liftoff thrust.

I don't know why you're limiting yourself to only looking at liftoff thrust without looking at propellant loads. According to Ed Kyle's spacelaunchreport.com, GLOW of Proton is roughly 700 tonnes, Zenit around 460 tonnes and Angara A5 about 770 tonnes.

Zenit is much lighter (445mt vs 759mt), and has less thrust (740t vs 850t of A5). Totally different class

Can anybody tell me is the Angara cross feed shown here is just a proposal / fan art or is this actually implemented in the rocket rolled out today?
