ISS Daily Summary Report – 11/11/14

Human Research Program (HRP) Saliva Collection:  Wilmore performed a salivary collection and inserted the sample into MELFI.  These sample collections were in support of participation in the HRP experiments: Biochem Profile, Repository, and Cardio Ox.

Zebrafish Muscle Post Operations:  Wilmore disassembled the Aquatic Habitat (AQH) from within the Multi-purpose Small Payload Rack (MSPR) Work Volume following the return of the zebrafish on Soyuz 39 (39S) and the completion of the Zebrafish Muscle experiment.  He then removed and stowed the AQH components including Water Circulation Unit, Aquatic Habitat Controller, Air Pump, Gas Exchanger, Bio Filter, Aquariums, Cameras and Light from the MSPR.  Zebrafish looks at whether atrophy of muscles under the condition of microgravity also occurs in zebrafish and why their atrophy occurs in the microgravity.

Potable Water Dispenser (PWD) Sampling:  Wilmore obtained a warm sample of the potable water bus today. The sample was stowed for return to the ground on a later date.

Node 3 Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) Deactivation:  With only 3 crew members onboard after 39S undock, the Node 3 CDRA was deactivated yesterday. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) scrubbing is being performed by the Russian Segment Vozdukh in Manual Mode 6.

Possible Conjunction with Object #39372: Ground teams evaluated tracking data throughout the day for a possible conjunction with Object #39372 (Yaogan 12 Debris). The debris is small, experiences about twice as much drag as ISS and is reasonably well tracked. Time of Closest Approach (TCA) will be tomorrow, November 12, at 8:40am CST. A decision whether or not to perform a Predetermined Debris Avoidance Maneuver (PDAM) will be made overnight after additional tracking data is received. If the decision is made to perform the maneuver, the Time of Ignition (TIG) would occur on Wednesday at 6:20am.  The PDAM can be executed without impacting the Soyuz 41S 4-orbit rendezvous, currently scheduled for November 23rd.

The International Space Station’s “Georges Lemaitre” Automated Transfer Vehicle fired its engines for 3 minutes, 25 seconds at 6:35 a.m. Central time today in a Pre-Determined Debris Avoidance Maneuver (PDAM) to move well away from a small piece of debris from a spent Chinese satellite (Yaogan 12) launched in November 2011.

The maneuver, which was coordinated with Russian and European flight controllers, raised the station’s altitude by 9/10 of a mile at apogee and 2/10 of a mile at perigee and left the station in an orbit of 262.3 x 252.0 statute miles.

The maneuver substituted for a previously planned reboost of the station that had been planned for Wednesday night which would have been required regardless to place the station at the proper altitude for the upcoming launch of the Expedition 42/43 crew on Nov. 23, U.S. time, on a 4-orbit, 6-hour rendezvous to reach the station.

Without the maneuver, the debris would have passed within 7/10 of a mile of the station at 8:40 a.m. Central time. The three-person crew on the station was informed of the potential conjunction and maneuver plans on Tuesday and was never in any danger.

Predetermined Debris Avoidance Maneuver (PDAM) for Object #39372:  After evaluating the latest tracking information on object #39372 (Yaogan 12 Debris), the Flight Control Team decided to perform a PDAM at 6:20am CST this morning in order to clear the object.  Today’s maneuver will not impact the Soyuz 41S 4-orbit rendezvous scheduled for November 23rd.

Cell Mechanosensing-2 Closeout: Wilmore removed the Fluorescence Microscope from the MWA.  He then reconfigured the microscope in the MSPR work volume in preparation for the Aniso Tubule Experiment in Increment 43/44.  Cell Mechanosensing-2 is a continuing investigation to identify gravity sensors in skeletal muscle cells and help develop countermeasures to muscle atrophy. Scientists believe that the lack of mechanical stress from gravity causes tension fluctuations in the plasma membrane of skeletal muscle cells, in turn changing the expression of key proteins and genes and allowing muscles to atrophy. Muscle cells from rats and kidney cells from African clawed frogs are given fluorescent gene markers and then attached to an extracellular matrix under different tensions.  Aniso Tubule will examine growth modifications of Arabidopsis hypocotyls in space. Scientists aim to analyze the changes in dynamics of cortical microtubules and microtubule-associated proteins by observing Arabidopsis hypocotyls and microtubule-associated proteins with a fluorescence microscope.

Lab Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) Air Selector Valve (ASV) 104 Change Out:  Today, Wilmore replaced the ASV 104 from the Lab CDRA.  This activity was scheduled as a result of last Thursday’s ASV Remote Power Controller (RPC) trip and subsequent troubleshooting.  With only 3 crew members currently onboard, both CDRAs have both been deactivated. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) scrubbing is being performed by the Russian Segment Vozdukh System.

Waste and Hygiene Compartment (WHC) Pre-Treat Tank [EK] Changeout:  Wilmore completed a change out of the WHC pre-treat tank this morning as part of nominal WHC maintenance.  Following the replacement, he captured and downlinked video imagery of the [ЕK] Hose during dosing.  The imagery will be analyzed on the ground to ensure that the appropriate quantities of pre-treat are being provided to the system during use.  The imagery was captured during this activity because it is the first pre-treat tank Removal and Replacement that has been performed since installing a new dose pump in October.

Radi-N2 Neutron Field Study (Radi-N2):  Wilmore retrieved eight bubble detectors from deployed locations in the US Lab and delivered them to the Russian crew who will process all detectors in the Bubble Reader. The objective of this investigation is to better characterize the ISS neutron environment and define the risk posed to the crewmembers’ health and provide the data necessary to develop advanced protective measures for future space flight.


Electromagnetic Levitation (EML) Commissioning:  Wilmore continued with commissioning of the EML by changing the magnification mode of the high speed camera and opening EML gas valves.  The EML provides for containerless processing of liquid metals in a micro-gravity environment and precise measurement of their thermo-physical properties.   

Japanese Experiment Module Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS) Console Checkout:  Wilmore activated and checked out the JEMRMS Console with software parameters that will support JEMRMS operations with external cargo on the SpaceX-5 vehicle.

Regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) Recycle Tank Remove and Replace (R&R):  Wilmore is changing out the Regenerative ECLSS recycle tank as part of routine operations today.

Remote Power Controller (RPC) Trip:  Today, the RPC which provides power to the Lab Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) air selector valves, tripped open.  The same RPC had tripped open last week and had since been reclosed.  Ground Teams are reviewing telemetry in order to determine the forward plan for troubleshooting.  Meanwhile, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) scrubbing is being performed by the Russian Segment Vozdukh System during this three crew stage.  Node 3 CDRA is also available if required.

Guess what the powers at be done at the NASA Space Station Expeditions overview website now have done  to further keep us from having much information evidently. . I went there yesterday to see if  they have yet  updated the  three Expedition 42 newest crewmembers to launch soon their written Preflight  Crew  Interview. But now  NOT ONLY has NASA has pulled the written  Preflight Interviews of the 3 present ISS crew on the station BUT all the previous   ISS Expeditions written Preflight Interviews all way back to Expedition 3 as well.  Any one has any insight into this or does NASA  just want to limit even further what we know about the ISS as these preflight written interviews gives us plenty of insight into not only the crew members but the Expedition as well ???

Heard a discussion today that revealed several items that apparently weren't lost in the Orb-3 failure. Butch was doing prep for arrival of the next crew and research by the ground revealed the sleeping bags and liners for Terry and Samantha are coming up with them on the Soyuz (or could they actually be replacements?)  Terry's underwear definitely wasn't lost because Butch was able to unpack it and stow it in his sleep cubicle :)

On a related matter, I have been waiting for weeks for onboard ISS images. These used to be on NASA's Flickr page (NASA2explore), but the page has not been updated for a month now. Some new pics have been posted, all related to the preparations of the ISS-42 launch, but there have been no pictures of any of the events onboard the ISS as from early October (i.e. no pics of US EVA#28, Rus EVA#40, the departure of Dragon CRS-4, the departure of the ISS-40/41 crew, etc, etc.). Of course, some pics have become available (thru Roscosmos or the Twitter pages of the astronauts), but NONE from NASA. Do they perhaps post these pics at a different location, or is the NASA coverage going further downhill?

3D Printing in Zero-G:  Wilmore completed a review of the 3D printing in Zero-G payload overview and procedures in preparation for next week’s scheduled activity.  The 3D printing in Zero–G technology demonstration experiment aims to validate extrusion-based additive manufacturing technology’s ability to function in a micro-gravity environment.

Seedling Growth-2 Experiment:  Wilmore performed the second of three data collection sessions for the Seedling Growth-2 experiment.  During this session Wilmore removed the Experiment Containers (ECs) from the European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS), processed and photographed the samples and placed them in a Minus Eighty degree Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) for freezing and stowage until return on a later flight.  He then installed four ECs on EMCS Rotor A for the third experiment run. Seedling Growth-2 is the second part of the Seedling Growth Experiment series that uses the plant Arabidopsis thaliana to determine the effects of gravity on cellular signaling mechanisms of phototropism and to investigate cell growth and proliferation responses to light stimulation in microgravity conditions.

Japanese Experiment Module Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS) Backup Drive System (BDS) Reconfiguration:  Wilmore configured cables and performed a checkout of the JEMRMS BDS.  This checkout was performed as preparation for the SpaceX-5 mission, when the JEMRMS will be used to transfer external payloads.

Compound Specific Analyzer-Combustible Products (CSA-CP) Activation and Checkout:  Wilmore completed the final checkout and deployment of the 4 CSA-CPs that were delivered to the ISS on 40S.

I heard during an exchange that several items lost on Orb-3 were 2 or 3 harnesses worn by the crew on the T-2 treadmill.  There were no specifics of whether these were sized for arriving crews but the on-board spares were small and medium.

Salivary Markers:  This morning, Wilmore completed a Salivary Marker questionnaire.  The Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Microgravity on Salivary Markers of Innate Immunity investigation involves the collection of blood, saliva, urine and a health assessment on six subjects pre-, in- and post-flight to determine if spaceflight induced immune system dysregulation increases infection susceptibility or poses a significant health risk to crewmembers onboard the International Space Station. The investigation utilizes a longitudinal, repeated measures design to determine the effects of long-term exposure to microgravity on a host of salivary antimicrobial proteins (AMPs), latent viral reactivation, antibacterial properties of saliva, and blood markers associated with innate host immune defense.

3D Printing in Zero-G:  Wilmore performed steps to set up the 3D Printer hardware in the Micro-gravity Science glovebox (MSG) Work Volume in preparation for printing.  In addition, the crew exchanged filters and then activated the MSG Facility to support MSG payload operations.  After setting up the 3D Printer hardware in the MSG, the crew monitored the printing of a coupon (sample) to calibrate the 3D printer. Late in the printing process, the coupon separated from the print tray and the Payload Developer (PD) issued a stop command.  The team is standing down for the day and will assess forward steps.  The 3-D Printing In Zero-G technology demonstration experiment will show that a 3-D printer can work normally in space. A 3-D printer extrudes streams of heated plastic, metal or other material, building layer on top of layer to create three-dimensional objects. Testing a 3-D printer on the International Space Station is the first step towards establishing a working machine shop in space, a critical component for astronaut missions and in-space manufacturing.

JEM Freezer-Refrigerator Of STirling cycle (FROST) apply Epoxy Putty:  Earlier this year the crew reported corrosion on the inside of the JEM FROST Cooler 1 sample box lid.  Today, Wilmore applied Epoxy Putty over the corrosion to prevent the corrosion from spreading.

Multi-user Droplet Combustion Apparatus (MDCA):  Wilmore reviewed procedures and gathered hardware and tools for MDCA Hardware Replacement Part 1.  Today’s activity had the crew configure the Fluid Combustion Facility (FCF) MDCA Chamber Insert Assembly (CIA) in support of the Flame Extinguishment Experiment-2 (FLEX-2) Binary-Droplet Array test points.  Crew then removed the MDCA CIA from the CIR Combustion Chamber, restrained it to the Maintenance Work Area (MWA), removed the MDCA Fiber Arm, removed both MDCA Igniters, replaced the MDCA Color Camera, and re-installed the MDCA CIA in the Chamber. FLEX-2 uses small droplets of fuel to study the special burning characteristics of fire in space. The FLEX-2 experiment studies the rate and manner in which fuel is burned, the conditions that are necessary for soot to form, and the way in which a mixture of fuels evaporate before burning. The results from these experiments will give scientists a better understanding how fires behave in space and will provide important information that will be useful in increasing the fuel efficiency of engines using liquid fuels.

Khladon (Freon 218) Venting:  Samokutyaev and Serova performed steps to release pressure in the Russian Segment Air Conditioner System [СКВ] by venting Khladon (Freon 218) overboard.  However, several of the quick disconnects that were actuated during the procedure exhibited leaks. As a result, the Khladon was vented into the cabin instead.  The quantity released was ~100g, which results in a density of 117 mg/m3 over the volume of ISS after about 2 hours, which was below the stated ISS zero risk flight rule limit of 150 mg/m3.  As part of nominal air scrubbing process, the Russian Air Purification System [БМП] and the USOS Trace Contaminant Control System (TCCS) will remove residual Khladon from the atmosphere. Intermodule ventilation configuration was not changed as a result of this inadvertent release.

Aniso Tubule:  Wilmore has set up the fluorescence microscope and laptop for initial checkout at Multipurpose Small Payload Rack (MSPR) Work Volume.  This work is in support of future Aniso Tubule experiment operations.  Experimenters will examine growth modifications of Arabidopsis hypocotyls and the changing orientation of cortical microtubule under microgravity conditions in space. Scientists will further observe changes in dynamics of cortical microtubules and microtubule-associated proteins by observing Arabidopsis hypocotyls and microtubule-associated proteins with a fluorescence microscope.

According to ITAR-TASS, Roskosmos has denied that there was a freon leak in the Russian segment.

Fluids Integration Rack (FIR) maintenance:  Wilmore replaced both the LMM (Light Microscopy Module) Microscope Power/Data Cable 1 and the LMM Monochrome Camera 1 and configured LMM for microscope characterization. The configuration includes removing the current Advanced Colloids Experiment (ACE) sample, replacing one objective lens, and installing Preliminary Advanced Colloids Experiment (PACE) Target inside Auxiliary Fluids Container.

Portable Power Supply-2 (PPS-2) (T-Cell Activation in Aging):  Wilmore set up the portable power supply in the Columbus module.  He then unstowed and setup a Kubik module and performed a functional checkout of the PPS at maximum Kubik power draw. At the conclusion of the checkout, he disconnected and stowed the Kubik unit.   Kubik is a small controlled temperature incubator or cooler with removable inserts designed for self-contained, automatic microgravity experiments such as those using seeds, cells, and small animals.  T-Cell Culture Cassettes for the Kubik incubator will be delivered to the ISS on a SpX-5.  T-Cell Activation in Aging seeks the cause of a depression in the human immune system while in microgravity. T-cells, a type of white cell, are coated with chemical receptors that must trigger together to activate the body’s immune system properly. T-cells from flight crews and ground volunteers in a range of ages are analyzed to determine changes in protein production and gene response on the ground and in microgravity.

BioLab (Triplelux-B):  The activity to perform an update of the Triplelux displays on the BioLab laptop was deferred today.  The activity was scheduled in preparation for Triplelux–B samples, which arrive on SpX-5.  The objective of Triplelux-B is to further understand the cellular mechanisms underlying the increase in radiation responses, and the impairment of the immune system functions, under spaceflight conditions. Triplelux-B specifically studies phagocytosis in invertebrate immune cells, using Hemocyte primary cells (non-adherent suspension) derived from the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), for investigating basic immune functions. Those functions include the induction of gene activation, phagocytosis, and DNA repair on the radiation affected cells.

Waste and Hygiene Compartment (WHC) Manual Fill:  As part of routine maintenance, Wilmore performed a manual fill of the WHC Flush Water Tank. The procedure had Wilmore temporarily disconnect the Dose Pump in order to protect it from increased pressures during the fill.  Once pressure equalized, the Dose Pump was reconnected.  Wilmore took photos during today’s activity for downlink and ground analysis.

Seedling Growth-2: The third of three six-day-growth sessions was completed today. Wilmore removed Experiment Containers (ECs) from the European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS), processed the samples and stowed them in the Minus Eighty degree Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) for return on a later flight.  In a troubleshooting effort, the crew installed the single EC which did not hydrate during the first Seedling Growth session. Seedling Growth-2 is the second part of the Seedling Growth Experiment series and uses the plant Arabidopsis thaliana to determine the effects of gravity on cellular signaling mechanisms of phototropism and to investigate cell growth and proliferation responses to light stimulation in microgravity conditions. Seedling Growth 2 requires three EMCS runs to be performed to collect image data and frozen samples.

3D Printing in Zero-G:  Wilmore performed steps to open up the 3D printer and remove the partially completed coupon which was printed on November 17th.  He then monitored the printing of a second coupon to further calibrate the 3D printer. The 3-D Printing In Zero-G technology demonstration experiment will show that a 3-D printer can work normally in space. A 3-D printer extrudes streams of heated plastic, metal or other material, building layer on top of layer to create three-dimensional objects. Testing a 3-D printer on the International Space Station is the first step towards establishing a working machine shop in space, a critical component for astronaut missions and in-space manufacturing.

Command and Data Handling (C&DH) MIL-STD-1553 Data Bus Checkout: Today, Flight Controllers successfully performed an activity to checkout the redundant channels of all active 1553 data busses downstream of the Multiplexer/De-multiplexers (MDMs) onboard the ISS.  This checkout is performed every 6 months to verify redundancy and characterize performance.

Russian Treadmill (BD2) Status: Yesterday, the Russian Treadmill (BD2) experienced a failure with its control panel. The Russian crewmembers have since been given a go to use the USOS Treadmill (T2), meanwhile BD2 is repaired. Overnight, the crew performed troubleshooting steps which proved unsuccessful. Recovery efforts will continue in the coming days while Russian ground specialists assess launching spare parts in order to recover from the failure.

Some sort of US Army choir/singing group is serenading the crew from Mission Control Houston. Anchors Away was first and it sounds like something in Russian is happening now.
