Offline Galactic Penguin SST

I've just been told that the launch is delayed to 25th December 2013, 16:30 local time.

People at Plesetsk worked on the launch pad until 04:00 last night. They need to rest.

Hmm that means two launches in 12 hours on Christmas Day from Plesetsk!  ;)

The one day slip is due to LOX leakage on the ground side: http://www.interfax.ru/news/348633

A bit inconsiderate for my Christmas Day plans! ;)

Nearly missed the slip, so if it moves again, if someone can PM me, that'd be appreciated!

Wonder if this NOTAM for "space debris" over South Pacific later on December 24 is related to this launch

The NK-33 engine has waited 40 years for launch, it can wait one more day.

How much the Soyuz-2-1v weigh when fully fueled?

It looks bigger than Antares, yet it has only one engine at liftoff while Antares requires two engines?

It can't be much more than 135 tons or so.

Well I've found it  ;) Its 160 tons as per http://www.russianspaceweb.com/soyuz1_lv_development.html

While Antares is ~240 tons as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antares_(rocket)

So it makes sense now.  :)

The Soyuz 2-1v first stage looks to be roughly the same length as the Antares first stage, but is only 2.66/2.95 meters diameter compared to 3.9 meter diameter Antares.  Also, the single NK-33A engine thrust is substantially augmented by the thrust produced by the four-nozzle steering engine, so it is not a 50% less thrust situation.

Why do they need a steering engine? Does the NK-33 not gimbal but AJ-26 does?

The NK-33 does not gimbal as produced in 1973.

As I understand it, engine gimbal and electronics are the special sauce Aerojet adds to make an AJ-26 out of an NK-33.  So, yes.  :)
